Kapil is the godfather of modern Indian cricket. What an action ! Me as a kid growing up in late 80’s Kapil was the reason I watched cricket. This man was a joy
Agreed. If not for the controversy involving Azhar, Manoj, Jadeja and Sidhu who all named him in match fixing case under Tehelka camera, his career would have been the greatest beginning of India cricket in different orbit. It took few more years under Ganguly to bring the glory back, effectively carried on by Dhoni and Kohli to great heights. However, it doesn't take away the contributions of Kapil to Indian cricket.
Dev captained the Indian cricket team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, and in the process became the first Indian captain to win the Cricket World Cup, and is still the youngest captain (at the age of 24) to win the World Cup for any team.
If Kapil Dev (175 not out) would not have stood tall and saved the team against Zimbabwe after 17/5 at Tunbridge Wells, then India would've returned home immediately. This World Cup became possible ONLY BECAUSE OF KAPIL DEV'S UNSHAKEABLE TEAM FAITH AND SELF BELIEF THAT TIME. I think Kapil Dev's 175 not out in SUCH A CRISIS SITUATION is infinitely better than Vivian Richards or even Donald Bradman knock !!! 🙏 Also, we all clearly forget to appreciate and honor the towering grit and perseverance of our lower order batsmen in this match - It was not Kapil Dev alone but the invaluable priceless partnership contribution by the legends Roger Binny, Madan Lal and Syed Kirmani actually brought India out of the skeleton in the graveyard of 17/5. So, full credit and endless respect to respected lower order batsmen legends Roger Binny, Madan Lal and Syed Kirmani who stood absolutely firm alongside the legend of Kapil Dev. In both World Cup matches (1983 and 2011) respectively, Indian captains (Kapil Dev and M.S.Dhoni) performed fabulously and India won the World Cup.
