    WEST INDIES vs INDIA
    Final
    25 June 1983
    Lord's, London, England
    INDIA - 183 (54.4 overs)
    WEST INDIES - 140 (52 overs)
    India won by 43 runs
The final of the 1983 Cricket World Cup was played between India and the West Indies at Lord's on 25 June 1983. This was the third consecutive World Cup final appearance for the West Indies, having won the last two Cricket World Cups. India, playing in their first final, defeated the West Indies to claim their first World Cup title. India's victory in the match is generally regarded as a landmark moment in Indian cricket.
The match was the third consecutive World Cup final hosted at Lord's, following those in 1975 and 1979. India was making their first appearance at a World Cup final after defeating England by 6 wickets in the first semi-finals. This was also the first appearance by an Asian nation in a World Cup final. The West Indies had reached a third consecutive final after defeating Pakistan by 8 wickets in the second semi-final, and were looking for their third consecutive World Cup win.
After losing the toss, India were asked to bat first against a West Indies team that arguably boasted the world's best bowling attack. Sunil Gavaskar, who had had a generally unsuccessful tournament, got dismissed early on for two. A partnership between Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath took India past the 50 mark, before the former was taken lbw by Marshall. Amarnath was then bowled by Holding for 26, and only two more runs were made before Yashpal Sharma fell. Kapil Dev, the Indian captain, took 8 balls to reach 15, but was caught off the bowling of Larry Gomes; while Kirti Azad fell for a duck, leaving India at 111/6. Roger Binny was caught on two, while Sandeep Patil made 27 to get India to 153/8. All rounder Madan Lal soon followed for 17, and 10th wicket partnership made 22 runs before Michael Holding bowled Syed Kirmani for 14. India were thus bowled out for 183 in 54.4 overs, which many thought was easily reachable. Andy Roberts had claimed three wickets, and Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Larry Gomes took two wickets each
The West Indies set out to chase the low target of 184, but lost an early wicket when Balwinder Sandhu famously clean bowled Gordon Greenidge. Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards, batted smoothly past 50, but both batsmen were removed by the bowling of Madan Lal, leaving the West Indies at 57/3. Lal soon claimed a third wicket - that of Gomes - and Dev then caught West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, leaving the West Indies at 66/5. Ten runs later, Faoud Bacchus was removed by Sandhu. Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall put on a partnership 43 runs, before Amarnath dismissed them on 119 and 124 respectively. Soon, Kapil Dev trapped Andy Roberts for lbw, and Amarnath bowled Michael Holding. The West Indies were thus all out for 140, and India had won their maiden Cricket World Cup by 43 runs. The Indian bowlers had exploited the weather and pitch conditions to complete one of the biggest upsets in cricket history, defeating the previously invincible West Indies. Both Amarnath and Lal had taken three wickets for India, while Sandhu claimed two. There was no "Man of the Series" award in 1983.
*Amarnath was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

My father tells me that Pakistan was very happy on india's win...as for the first time world cup came to asia...indian team proved to be the perfect underdogs and stole the show... West indies used to be an invincible monster in those days but against that well united and highly motivated Indian side...they just collapsed like grains of sand...indeed it was a phenomenal feat...love and respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰 ❤ ♥

Miss those days.

I was a teenager then when the 1983 world cup happened, Chennai was undergoing one of the worst droughts as we used to be in standing for a pot of water from a hand pump at a corner of our street for 5 hours. Those 5 hours used to go like 5 minutes as we would listen to 1983 world cup cricket commentary on the streets with our plastic pots lined up. Come finals and I was watching TV in my friend's house from where my house is at 10 minutes walking distance. As West Indies were going strong with Dujon and Marshall, I lost all hopes and was walking back home alone in the dark street which was very quiet anticipating a West Indies victory. Halfway through my walk, the entire locality exploded with screams from every possible house signifying that a west indies wicket has fallen. I stopped, turned, and ran back to my friend's house - till date the fastest I would have run all my life - for sure Usain Bolt would have found it tough to overtake me during that run. Then the magical victory happened, one of the most joyous moments of my life. The entire otherwise calm locality woke up and all of us from kids to teenagers to adults took a procession in the street - unthinkable a day before. I would have watched the recordings of the 1983 world cup matches 1000s of times and would still watch till I breathe my last. The current generation will not understand our feelings but we were fortunate to live through those moments. Maybe if I have the next birth I may still remember - maybe only the 1983 world cup moments.

That day I watched half the match in TV,and the other half in transistor as I was travelling from Chennai to Bangalore by the night train. When I shared the victory in the train at around midnight, everyone was excited and some could not believe. Next day Morning when I reached Bangalore cantonment,I purchased all the English and Kannada newspapers.

After watching this video I read the comments below and it's gives me more goosebumps then the video itself. I born after 1983 still I can feel the feelings of those who watch this match from their story. There is not so much technology at that time to watch this match. But still they are really fortunate to watch or hear this match live. And yes nobody expect that India will win. Many people already accepted that India will lose definitely but just they want a respectable defeat but something incredible happens that night and from that night onwards we Indian started believing ourselves that nothing is impossible for us and later it is proved also that in every field India developed a lot.

The most memorable cricket match! The Indian team was considered underdogs for one day format. This must be the biggest lesson of management where the team members always considered themselves weaker than the opponents. But the leader, Great Kapil Dev believed in the team and motivated them to believe that they could do the impossible with maximum individual efforts. If you observe, none of the Indian players made a huge score against the formidable WI pace bowlers. But everybody has tried to contribute to the fullest and that made the difference!!!

And the reason they had to suffer the bio bubble fatigue was the players themselves. Why didn't they pull out of the IPL when they knew that the fatigue could happen? Look at so many other players from other countries, they decided not to participate in IPL second phase precisely bcz they knew this type of isolation can be harmful for the upcoming T20 world cup. Every cricket fan who really wants to know important truthful details of Indian team performance in earlier events must read this ☺️
✌️☺️Till millennial era events Indian team performance in a nutshell☺️
Interested readers, properly read this summary, which you won't find anywhere precisely put together. Your polite appreciation for this refined truthful analysis of several hours efforts & corrective replies & additional details are truly welcome (although I won't reply to any of the replies, and provocative least knowledge toddlers will be deservingly ignored as usual) ☺️
      H : HEROES (better performers)
      V : VILLAINS (worse performers)
(I've written the HERO & VILLAIN performers from best to worst order)
      1975 & 1979 :
[ IN BOTH WC IT'S BATTING FAILURE ]
      CAPTAIN :
      S VENKATARAGHAVAN
      1975 :
      OUT, 3RD IN GROUP A
      H : SYED-ABID-ALI (allrounder)
      V : GAVASKAR
      1979 :
      OUT, 4TH IN GROUP B
H : VISHWANATH GAVASKAR KAPIL (allround okay contribution) & BRIJESH (although small contribution)
      (All have performed fairly average)
V : Whole batting lineup (and even worst bowling), especially GAEKWAD VENGSARKAR AMARNATH with bat vs strong teams WI NZ
      1983 & 1987 :
[ KEY VETERAN PERFORMERS EITHER INCONSISTENT OR MISSED CRUCIAL KNOCKOUTS, AS IN 1987 ]
      CAPTAIN :
      KAPIL DEV
      1983 :
      WINNERS
H : BINNY SANDEEP AMARNATH MADANLAL YASHPAL KAPIL SRIKKANTH
      (BINNY is solid overall throughout)
      V : GAVASKAR
(Single digit streak except 2 odd innings in WC1979)
      1987 :
      LOST SEMIS TO ENGLAND
      (1st 50 over World Cup)
H : SIDHU AZHAR MANINDER SHASTRI GAVASKAR (except his AUS ENG failures) KAPIL
(SIDHU AZHAR SHASTRI MANINDER are exceptional, with batting consistency crucial contribution or crucial batter wkts)
      V : VENGSARKAR GAVASKAR
(Both are batting legends, but they've performed only vs AUS or else weak NZ ZIM of this WC unlike relatively stronger NZ ZIM of 1975 till 1983, VENGSARKAR didn't play SEMIS vs ENG which is real big dent to added batting strength, KAPIL is also inconsistent with bat)
      1992 TILL 1999 :
[ OVERALL BATTING BOWLING FAILURE, TOO MUCH CHOPPING AND CHANGING & NOT BACKING PROVEN PERFORMERS, LIKE WC1987 MATCHWINNER SIDHU EXCLUDED IN WC1992 ]
      CAPTAIN :
      MOHD. AZHARUDDIN
      1992 :
DISQUALIFIED IN TOP4 IN ROUND-ROBIN WORLD CUP
H : AZHAR KAPIL SACHIN MANJREKAR PRABHAKAR (bit with ball)/JADEJA
V : No consistency except AZHAR KAPIL & somewhat SACHIN/JADEJA/MANJREKAR, and mostly it's batting failure (than bowling vs last SA match), SIDHU exclusion from WC1992 is totally baseless (knowledgeable ones tell me about this)
      1996 :
LOST SEMIS TO SRILANKA BY RIOTING CROWD
(Note that SL had got 2 matches walkover in group stage from AUS & WI due to bombing & safety concerns caused by LTTE in SL)
H : SACHIN SIDHU KUMBLE RAJU JADEJA PRASAD & lastly SRINATH (in SEMIS and few other matches, also inconsistent at times)
V : AZHAR JADEJA PRABHAKAR KAMBLI (very very inconsistent with bat or ball, and consistent shuffling of batting order by captain with unsettled openers despite matchwinner SIDHU availability)
      1998 :
      LOST SEMIS TO WINDIES
H : SACHIN GANGULY JADEJA ROBIN JOSHI DRAVID
V : Worst bowling unable to pick wickets or contain runs, especially KUMBLE SRINATH vs strong WI in SEMIS
      1999 :
      OUT, LAST IN SUPER SIX
H : DRAVID GANGULY SACHIN ROBIN JADEJA RAMESH (good contributions with bat often at times) & SRINATH KUMBLE PRASAD MOHANTY (either wicket takers or have contained runs somewhat often)
V : Extremely inconsistent batting except DRAVID GANGULY SACHIN, JADEJA peeks in super six stage and ROBIN is solid, but often the top trio fails in some crucial matches, AZHAR MONGIA and bowlers except PRASAD MOHANTY SRINATH ROBIN & little of KUMBLE are alternately damn inconsistent and have leaked runs in few matches which led to WC exit with last position in super six, and even GANGULY was very iffy in super six. ☹️

A perfect team achievement..instilled self belief for that generation who were teens in the 80's.
None expected India to be in seni final...forget the finsls.
Turning point in the tournament was that match against Zimbabwe where the all time great Haryana hurricane Kapildev played the innibgs of his life and scored 175*., from a point of 17 for 5. All scored pairing with tail enders...Kirmani, Madanlal, Binny,
That gave the belief that India can do it.
    Coming to finals..
Srikanth 's fast score against the deadliest bowling attack in cricket histiry, Blistering knock by Sandeep patil, Binny...183 all out.
All of us thought Windies will finish in 25 to 30 overs max...in fact Richards, Greenudge and Haynes between them..they would have finished the match..Heroes in their own tight.
That life time delivery by Sandhu that bowled the mighty Greenidge was the point, where we felt we will fight for sn honourable defeat..
Then came another life time performance by the greatest cricketer Kapildev...when King Viv Richards looked ominous and was all set to snatch the game single hsndedly...Kapil ran multiple yards back...and caught ...he did not catch the balll..but the Prudential cup at that time..
Clive Lloyd's quick exit sealed it..
But then Dujon (what a great keeper and a graceful cricketer) looked set to recover windues, another hero came to rescue. Jimmy Amarnath ( perhaps greatest player of pace bowling at his time) - who wad in his peak form..man of the match in Semi's...bowled Jeff Dujon with his unconventional military medium pace..
Quick wickets of last 2 by Jimmy...
And as they say...rest is history...
As the then PM Madam Indira Gandhi said " India can do it".

I was listening on the radio , not live commentary but sports reports every hour..when India made 183, the reporter said the game was over meaning that the Windies would cruze to victory. The reporter being a white DJ in apartheid South Africa. When India won, I wish I could have seen that DJs face..What a victory for my motherland..PS I was 18 at the time and still remember it like it was yesterday..I am proud to say my great great grand parents came to South Africa 🇿🇦 from Bharat ...luv from S.A.

ODI cricket was just over a decade old at that time. Belligerent batting wasn't there as Test Cricket was still the standard form of the game. ODIs were played just in the manner of tests. So, 184 was a very good target in 1983.
