I was a child but I still remember every match of 1996 World cup. I remember India lost by 16 runs especially Ricky Ponting's catch by Manjrekar. I remember India Pak Jadeja Younis encounter as well. But semi final against Sri Lanka was a tragedy.

I've got to say, especially in the early to mid 90s, if Tendulkar didn't play well India was done. Till Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman got established a little later in the decade, he was single-handedly carrying the team's batting. Gavaskar had similar problems as well in his time. I get that you're comparing them purely in terms of style/technique, but Tendulkar's achievements were uniquely impressive given that Mark Waugh had massive backup in that Australian side. Alan Border overlapped with him. Tubbs and Tugga were great batsmen. Ponting and Langer overlapped with him towards the end. On paper, India had Azharuddin and Jadeja, but they never seemed to pick up the slack if Tendulkar got out in a match that counted.

Sachin is a match winner indeed, just not as good as Brian Lara. What kind of support do you think Lara got from other batsmen? India had lot more famed batsmen than West Indies had. Still Lara was able to take matches lot deeper.

What about other batsman dravid never scored odi century against Australia. Ganguly was scared to play against them he had good aerial shots but rarely played against aus.
