- Based on the learning curve for the game being a bit steep: a semi-tutorial on learning the general ins and outs of Sins. In this episode we deal with faction selection, picking a good map to play, and how to develop a planet/empire in the early stages.

No matter, how you add it up, you will end up with a total of 42.

50 + 66.6 + 25 = 141.6 or 142 if you round it.

This is exactly what I have been needing. Already of fan of your videos, and I have been trying to motivate myself to play more of this game. Been through the tutorials, and played a few hours - not quite confident in what I was doing. I have watched your Sins videos often wishing you would do a tutorial type series. I mashed that "like" button hard - please do continue.
Love your KOTOR and Gal Civ stuff too. Age of Wonders just make me jealous cause I can't afford to buy the game yet. :-)

No there isn't. The mod died before it even started being made.
I think that, the best map to play on is 'Systems of War' because it has the single star per person like in 'Doppel gangers'but with a star in the middle with more planets. It allows people to build out defense in their main star system while fighting to take over planets in the middle. It's really engaging.
I'm also glad you're doing this, Dave. Speaking as one LPer to another I would really recommend abusing the pause button on your keyboard throughout the LP (especially when you've met the other factions) so that you have time to talk to the people and can still do everything you need to do to win the game. I say this because I also tried a tutorial-ish style LP and was completely humiliated in doing so, as I was focused on explaining what I was doing instead of reacting to key developments and thus had not developed fast enough. (As a side note I would also really recommend any new player to use the pause button religiously; the AI can be everywhere at once, you can't be, but you do control the flow of time. I call that a fair trade).
Finally, to add to this wall of text, you are mistaken in that the fleet logistics uses no research structures. It, in fact, uses both research structures interchangeably (ie 1 hostility and 1 harmony = 2 levels in fleet logistics). Seeing as you mostly have more than enough combined research structures to research the whole tree by mid-game, few people actually realize there is a pre-requisite. And yes I will be correcting you every episode :p

IT. IS. FUCKING. AMAZING.
It has hero's from Romulan Commander Ceela to even Locutus of Borg. The modders are even adding the Dominion Cardasian alliance as well.

Thanks for doing these videos. I bought Sins when it first came out, but just couldn't get the hang of it. Your videos have made me want to dust it off and give it another attempt.
I learned how to play this game through trial, error, and achievements.
Even against medium AI, you can simply make one colonization capital ship, and let it sustain you for as long as it takes to get the resources to buy other capital ships. You won't need other ships until you get to the point that the AI starts spamming carriers non-stop, and hopefully by then you have the economy to sustain a heavy duty fleet. Or have a Titan capable of devouring massive fleets with ease (literally for the Vasari Loyalists).

As a relatively low hour player I wanted to thank you for making these I've decided to come back in prep for sins 2 on steam. Also huge shout out for playing advent rebel that's my favorite too.

you keep referencing starcraft but this game is in various ways closer to warcraft 3. units die slowly and hero/capitals gain levels etc.

I bought this game from steam. I had no idea how to fully play this game. Still love it. I played this shit for about 12 hours today. Lmao. Learned a lot, yet I still have more to learn. I didn't know that the factions have ship characteristics. Damn. I should have read more. Lmao! Awesome video bro!

@@6StimuL84 yes i fully understand this game . acording to me the the culture faction ( ADVENT) the culture power is very useful for making enemy culture on that planet is dead . The point is the enemy lose the control of the planet because your culture win agains enemy culture. I played this game with my friend using LAN offline for 2 month

I'm glad to see you play this game again. Personaly i really love this game and like to play it again and again. Watching your LPs tought me a good amount of strategies and i've enjoyed it a lot.
But, i've noticed a little mistake in your explanations: Fleet logistics needs structures to be researched. It just does not matter, if it's economic or military you are allways able to reasearch up to the max of the one you have more buildings of.

Me jumping head first into this game to say I was pissed is an understatement. For me it was an endless marathon of pirate attacks and frustrating camera angles so I'm glad that you are making this. Suffice to say it's better than the terrible "tutorial" the game first gives you.
Never played this game and was never too interested in getting it. But, maybe watching this will spark an interest in the game in me. After all, I have bought several games specifically because you did an LP of them.

21:05 I've always found it handy since capital ships can shoot lots of different guns at different angles to put it in the middle of the enemy at least if the enemy fleet is weak and can't endanger my capital ship. I really missed this game I personally think it's better then Stellaris. That game is full of micro lately every single planet has to be microed while this game is more of a macro management game where running 50 planets isn't such a chore. Oh Sins thank you for waiting for me.
This is an excellent LP getdaved. First time I played the game I thought it was shit because I just didnt understand it, ita such a deep game that a video like this should have been shipped with its release.
Good stuff Dave, all of your LP's are instructional IMHO but its nice to see you do a learning LP for Sins.

This game still holds up after not playing it for 7 years. Wow.
Tec= Cheap ships that are quick to build but are generally out classed and are only good in large quantities.
Advent= Powerful ships that generally outclass most ships but are expensive and take a long time to build.
Vasari= Has special weapons that are good in different situations.
That's what I get from your description of the races.
I always pick the TEC loyalist faction. I absolutely love playing the turtle defense playstyle. I use my defense structures and bring a kol battleship fleet from place to place. Generally 2 Kols at a time with basic picket. I build a colony fleet of just support vessels to strike out and reinforce neutral planets.
you could have told a bit more about the capitals
I agree with you that the colony cruiser is a great choice, especially for new players, but the carrier of each faction is also a great starter
for anyone interested other good first capital ships are:
the battleship of each faction (kol has it's own weaponsystem and doesn't get benefits from normal weaponupgrades - so not that great overall)
the exp hungry ships Marza, Marauder and Mothership (Mothership is seen in the video - it is the exp hungry colony cruiser and a no brainer as first cap)
Rankulas - a unique nanite carrier for the vasari
What is your take on the Revelation BC as a starting capital ship? Most advent players go for Progenitor first as all its abilities are good save its ultimate, but Revelation is a stronger ship. Not to mention, its disable is the best in the game IMO. Properly micro it shuts out enemy cap ships for the duration of the battle. Guidance can be good too.
Since I usually take an economic focus I prefer going Progenitor first and Revelation second. Missing out on the early XP isn't a huge deal, the Revelation can catch up on levels pretty quickly.

I am about to watch this video purely because I am tired of my usual strat (which has proven to be OP time and time and time again) which pretty much involves playing as TEC Rebels, rushing the titan and about 2 capital ships and then building as many carrier ships as possible, filling them with bombers and then unleashing a swarm of unstoppable bomber squadrons alongside a titan and a capital ship against any orbital stations and fleets in a gravity well while having my colonization capital ship bomb the planet to death. It is amazing to watch as a swarm of bombers practically one shots (though it is more like 200 bombs) all my enemies :)
+deamongimli Yeah TEC have a nice cheap carrier cruiser as well. A large bomber squadron is terrifying.

Thank you for this video, I will watch the full series. I really want to play a game like this and this one looks good. Also I'm not a big fan of this kind of games but I'm searching for something different. I downloaded this game (pirate) to se if my pc can run it well, and actually it does. I want to at least try it, and obviously see if I like the game or not. And if I like it, I will buy it on steam :3

If you guys like Space RTS games then Homeworld 2 would not be that bad to pick up at all. Sure it's a bit dated, but it's one of the most detailed and spectacular game I've ever played. There are also mods for it, not many but there are a few that change the entire game.

Agree to disagree. Sins isn't as deep, but Starcraft II is a glorified mod of Brood War, and that may be putting it politely.

GetDaved I think it looks as deep from an empire management standpoint. That being said I think starcraft has insane game mechanics hence the need for intence micro skills. I used to be good at star craft then I stopped playing for a bti and went back and it felt so impossible.
I know it's about 3 years late to response to this but I used to call this game a lot of things, among them are "StarCraft in actual outer space", "Starcraft without the ground troops", and my favorite "Zergless Starcraft".
I know the original Starcraft is a good game and may be better than Starcraft 2, but SC2 fixed many problems with the original. if that wasn't so nobody would play it competitively.
Fun game, though I only have played the original. The first time I played was with the Advent, managed to copy a cheap strategy which I saw someone els use in an LP, and crushed all the hard computers. The last one though was so turtled in that I actually had to retreat my immense fleet from its homeworld, the first try. Heh the amount of bombers they had was staggering, as was meine, but I lacked anti air.
Just a fond memory of galactic conquest.. don't do wars! Unless you do.

Advent-Rebellion are my life.
Their weakness is supposed to be the Vasari, except I find that i'm fine with some support ships around to heal my own ships and completely disable the opposing ships. (Can't take any damage if the ship can't shoot )
Not to mention a titan that goes into an invincible rage mode before blowing up that will decimate a fleet before it goes down. Great for offense or defense.
on the defense, The Advent starbase has an ability to immobilize all enemy ships around it and spin them so that they can't target what they want anymore. having 2 of these stations well placed on a star can keep an enemy fleet trapped until they all die, and combined with the enduring devotion to prevent the loss of a planet from bombardment, this will force the enemy fleet to have to deal with this over powered ability.
indeed, also i love the advents abilities, because they are quite terrifing whe you think, and the start weack but with time they become strong and powerful
Hey Dave, while I was perusing the Sins forums, I stumbled across a thread that is quite old full of people talking about how Ironclad nerfed the Advent. Is this true?
And on a side note, I was unaware that 1. You could move ships in the Z-axis, and 2. That people online felt it was an exploit. I would like your opinion, because I feel it's part of the game, so it's not technically an exploit.
I haven't noticed anything too huge. Tweaking is normal in these games, as is people complaining about the tweaks :p

I was chosen by the pirates to be killed. (i was pretty new)when I saw the pirates are attacking your message I was thinking: WHERE WHERE? but when I found nothing I was like: oh ok . and didn't prepare after that for attacks XD and got rekt
love the game i would like to see maybe a mod or expansion that makes a mode kind of like the MoO. pretty much keep the battles the way they are but idk more diplomatic stuff and not all out blob war.

Dave, I hate to tell you this, but this is more like a 'Learn How to play Advent' series. You are too specifically geared to them, and naturally, a lot of what you do will be Advent strategy.
Still, I hope you get some more people to love the game with these videos.

There is a button on your keyboard labelled "pause break". It pauses the game.
Why is this series so quiet? i thought it was the first video so i skipped it but theyre all uber quiet for me. Watching with my speakers blasting so i can hear it. Normally have UA-cam videos at near minimum volume theyre so loud lol
I did it to provide you with a personal challenge.
Every faction gets cheaper stuff for a short amount of time with the colony capital ship ability, I believe.
Every faction gets a different type of construction bonus, but I believe they are all slightly different.
The capital bonuses are the following: Advend: A certain % discount for the planetary upgrades, TEC: A free extractor per level and a about 10 minutes bonus to the extraction rate. Vasari: At the moment, they gain some temporary construction ships (this ability was changed often)

Sometimes games look boring but when you play it, it's very interesting. For example, when I saw xcom gameplay online, I thought it was boring until I saw it being played irl and immediately tried it out myself and now it's one of my fav games of all time.
Yeah, there are games that are boring to watch but when you play them they get interesting

+GetDaved I might be wrong but I believe the focus of the game was more on multiplayer than single player hence the lack of a campaign.
You are correct, although I'm not sure if that matters or not. Perhaps their focus was on multiplayer but their fans would have liked some focus on single player as well.
GetDaved Yeah, it would have been nice to have a good campaign. I guess in the end they just went with what they did best instead of doing it COD style where you end up with a half baked single player campaign that sucked.
