kroooassant I'm just gonna point out that this is only your personal opinion, I played this Game a lot even through campaigns that took over 10 hours with 5 Friends and i just Love it
kroooassant how on earth u find this game boring? Play it with friends on multiplayers on medium or larger maps. Time killer. No friends? Just use the AI and set as ally
@kroooassant the dlc's really helps getting the game less boring. but the nb 1 problem i guess is the slow paced battles. good in early, long and boring in mid/end game. a shame because everything else is really nicely made.
The mods for this game are awesome! I have a total conversion for Star Trek and Star Wars. They also have Halo where the pirates are the flood and a Mass Effect mod.
They technically have 3 star wars mods, 2 star trek mods, a halo mod, a (very incomplete) mass effect mod, a bsg mod and a huge menagerie of other mods. This game is completely worth a buy because of the insane replay value the modding community has provided. People are still working on mods for this game. (The original came out in 2009)
Subscribed just for mentioning Microprose. I'm with you on the not putting up with complex games any more front; I went through exactly the same thought process over time... And yes, I used to read those damned manuals cover to cover as well!
I can’t thank you enough Mac for introducing this to me. I have sunk so many hours into it since I saw this video and it is one of the main reasons I’m such a massive fan of you!
I used to read 4x game manuals like that back in the day. Then it was game mags before the internet. I had stacks of em I kept "just incase" there was a strat I needed.
I just wish they'd remake this game using a better engine, because the one they used to make it only uses a single core so by the time you get a large fleet and do battle you'll get large FPS drops. Mine goes from 144fps down to 40-50 and even 30 sometimes. That's with several effects off like bloom, space elevators etc.
When can they make an official Sins of a Solar Empire 2 gaddamit! And make it a brand new engine with DirectX 11 and a more elaborate galaxy map and units. Its about time.
Marco Polo Nah massive graphics for an rts will lag it out to fuck. Can make it unplayable. Why alienate players with weaker graphics cards? Are you hot on this game? I've got more than enough units to be getting on with for now.
2uMRAsh as much as i like the game, the graphics have remained unchanged for almost a decade. Its painful to watch brah. I want the new iteration to this game, and with more ambitious features. Is that too much to ask?
Marco Polo The best thing about this game in my opinion is all the mods that have been made for it. If you want new units and better models and graphics, new races and random events just download some of the mods. Right now Star Trek Armada III just released a new update for their mod, and it looks amazing, sounds amazing and it's a ton of fun. thats just one of the many good mods for this game that changes up units and races while maintaining the good game mechanics
alkatull yeh i guess so, but usually with mods, ship balancing that is true to the sci fi series and canon is appalling. I wish they truly did an Armada 3. I thoroughly enjoyed both games.
Been on a Sins kick recently, found this review, and cannot disagree with anything. Not an indepth review mind you but enough that if your a fan of this genre or curious about the game, it will get you to buy it. This day and age of Sins is about 1000% more recommendable because of the mods and updates so buy at any price, you really cannot go wrong.
It is $9.99 on steam now for me with 50% off (i live in Ukraine). Which is still quite expensive for our region considering it is an old game. But still worth a buy.
few pointers, the tec rebels have a diplomacy research that allies the pirates and the neutral ships with you so they don't attack you. also the only problem with sending pirates after your enemies is that it exp for their capital ships that you are paying for.
Ive been playing this game WITHOUT STOP since I first stumbled across an old copy in a Wlmart game case.. When it added in Rebellion, I was orgasmic.. Now I spend lord only knows how much time playing 10 empires games (as they guy said, I have no freinds who play this). I love it beyond mere words.
Mack The most amazing thing about you is that you can play all sort of games including 4X games. I can only play a few type of games because the rest bore me. This is a good game, I bought it long time ago but only played it for 2 hours to see the graphic.
This game as well as all it's DLC and the Sins of A Solar Empire Trinity is on sale now for less than $18. I got it. I haven't played a RTS in quite a long while.
Love your videos mack! Great shit! If you guys are interested in this game its on sale right now on Steam until November 20th, the Ultimate Edition bundle is usually $49.99 but its $12.99 right now which seems like a fantastic deal. Im thinking of picking it up, just thought I'd let you guys know!
its funny because I went in reverse. I used to like simple games like FPS games etc. Now I get bored quick and have to have a complicated rpg to work with.
Just got done playing another game again. Still worth a buy all the DLC’s they just add honestly the minor factions as the primary if you’re strapped for cash that’s really cool
Extra credit for mentioning the Microprose 'black box' simulation games. SoaSE is an OK game, however it suffers from a fairly large issue. Balance goes out the window around end game as you can spam strike craft and neither flack or fighters are a counter to mass bomber swarms and yes it is perfectly possible to bomber gank a titan in a few passes. This problem, needless to say, is also in Rebellion. Now with this does detract from the game and I wouldn't pay full RRP for it unless you are an absolute real time 4X junkie but in a Steam sale? Ohh hell yes. Do I own it? Yep, brought it when it was first released. Played 100+ hours.
I bought Homeworld remastered and took a gamble on that. It's amazing as well. I'm fairly new to RTS action games but love sci-fi and checked out this vid. May have to get it. Cheers.
got the "ultimate edition" for $13 US (counting taxes), been wanting to play this game for a while but thought the price was a bit steep for the kinda game it was (as Worth A Buy said, $30, which is kinda high for me), but now that it's really cheap, I'm going to check it out and see if it's really as good as so many people are saying it is.
Gotta say, I like the narrators voice, it was a good review, covered several aspects, and had quality gameplay. Much more than some random assbag giving commentary on his first 20 minutes of gameplay. Would like to see more reviews from Worth a buy.
Have you tried Imperium Galactica 2 Alliances? It is a really good space RTS with a suprisingly good story (well if you are playing as Kra'hen or Solarian...)
Its atmospheric as well. One of the things i like about it. It wasn't straight forward for me to learn and i could still do with a lot of practice but for a 4k game its probably easy. Maybe its just that i dont really try anymore. I figured out Civ 5 in no time. But that was a good while back and i've been meaning to put a lot more time into it and this. Soon as i get bored with the latest tower defense addiction.
Looking at that, would I be right in thinking that the play area bears absolutely no resemblance to actual space and the way solar systems are organised? And the planets are tiny when you look at the ships next to them?
Mack, did you checked out Star Citizen by Roberts Space Industries? You're gonna love that! It's currently under developments but it will be the biggest, most epic space sim ever when finnished.
Hey Mack, have you considered doing a rapid-fire worth a buy giving quick pros and cons of each game on the Steam daily sales? I think you'd do a great job at it and it would be a great resource for those who use your opinions as part of their research into buying games.
And that just goes to show exactly how in tune I am with the work behind doing UA-cam videos. "Well I mean he's an internet personality, clearly he has every single video game ever made and can just throw out opinions on them whenever he wants."
Mack this is one of my all time favorite RTS games.I would love to get into a co op game with you, us against the AI is frickin fun.I'm also AtomicArmadillo in Mechwarrior Online.
It's the bomb diggity.I have a few friends that have this game and we get together at one of our houses and have a mini lan party .we make a huge map and play as a tean against the max AI .The games can last fo r 10 or more hours.Tons of fun.
£5.99 on steam right now, I came here because I have no idea what it is, thanks to this nice little straight to the point review I think I'll give it a go....
I am still playing this on a regular basis, though I have quite a few mods including stargate, star trek, star wars, battlestar galatica, Freespace, Babylon 5, Mass effect :p
Best command and conquer game if you in to sci fi specially if you try the mods on mod db page guys lots of space battles. awesome work by the mod teams
Battles like the ones in this game are what I hope the ones in space engineers can become except you know in like first person and all that. Where teams are put on one planet out of dozens with plenty of resources and they build their Ships or preselect one that has already been built. They go and Capture planets and battle. I know that in space engineers it's nothing like how this game is but I at least just mean they sort out all of the optimization problems, I KNOW that even with space engineers they can optimize it for huge battles and even planets. It's just that the code for the game is messy and there's calculations it makes that aren't even necessary and the hit boxes are more complicated than they need to be. Idk why I'm ranting here of all places but meh.
Thanks Mack, I have just purchased this game on Steam. By the way, mentioning Microprose, did you ever play Star Trek : Birth of the Federation? that was an awesome turn based game.
I have both DLC's, for $5 (australian) each they are pretty good value, new planets, galactic events, radiation storms, crazy dark fleet neutrals that appear out of nowhere with a titan.... they certainly add to the game experience.
I would say home-world 2 is the king of RTS don't get me wrong this is awesome and i just moded my sins to halo and it cool to see the unsc vs covenant the flood is the pirates lol what great game XD
If you ever do a retro worth a but, you should try supreme commander gold on steam, it's pretty much the only RTS besides solar empire that I ever play lol but I think it's a real solid RTS that's sadly lost to time basically
i dont really get this game, combat seems a little dull. What should you really do/control during engagement, seems to me all you can do is lay back and whatch the light show. am i missing something?
One of the most underrated games out there.
kroooassant I'm just gonna point out that this is only your personal opinion, I played this Game a lot even through campaigns that took over 10 hours with 5 Friends and i just Love it
kroooassant how on earth u find this game boring? Play it with friends on multiplayers on medium or larger maps. Time killer.
No friends? Just use the AI and set as ally
Game is great, especially with the expansion pack and the DLC's.
@kroooassant the dlc's really helps getting the game less boring. but the nb 1 problem i guess is the slow paced battles. good in early, long and boring in mid/end game. a shame because everything else is really nicely made.
@kroooassant Hell no this game is amazing.

I'm too late :( what was the deal anyway why were they giving it away for free?
Subscribed just for mentioning Microprose. I'm with you on the not putting up with complex games any more front; I went through exactly the same thought process over time...

Loved Gunship
@@Jon-pc6ch I still like Gunship and Gunship 2000 and red storm rising.....lol

I used to read 4x game manuals like that back in the day. Then it was game mags before the internet. I had stacks of em I kept "just incase" there was a strat I needed.
I still have the biggest manual I ever got with a video game; Falcon 4 (a Microprose game). Over 20 years old now.
I just wish they'd remake this game using a better engine, because the one they used to make it only uses a single core so by the time you get a large fleet and do battle you'll get large FPS drops. Mine goes from 144fps down to 40-50 and even 30 sometimes. That's with several effects off like bloom, space elevators etc.
they updated it, so it runs smoother

Free on steam today 19/12/2018 Happy Christmas Everyone
Just a side note, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion has 10 player support, not 8. might want to annotate that in somewhere ;)
$1 at EB Games, Frankston, Victoria Australia. I might have to pick it up.
It is $9.99 on steam now for me with 50% off (i live in Ukraine). Which is still quite expensive for our region considering it is an old game. But still worth a buy.

I swear to god this game was complicated as hell until I played it for a couple hours. Its pretty fun once you get how everything works
I started playing Homeworld again recently :-)
Thank god someone mentioned this
You should try the Complex mod
The true king of space rts.
And 9 years later it's coming to game pass, thanks for this video!

I was wondering how does this game compare to Star Wars Republic At War Mod. Which one is better or are they incomparable?
For the most part they are incomparable, you just pick which game fits your taste.
Did you record any gameplay of it at your corner?
If you did I'd love to see it.
Great Vid.. Made me smile. Will i buy! I just may, is it to much.. Yeah! The wife will kill me but looks like it needs to be done.
Thanks Mack, I have just purchased this game on Steam. By the way, mentioning Microprose, did you ever play Star Trek : Birth of the Federation? that was an awesome turn based game.
Never played that one
The base game is good. But I'd like to know if the DLCs are any good.
I wouldn't know about the DLCs, but there are some amazing mods out there, and almost none of them require mods to play

by the way its for $14 on ebay :)
so i guess now its really worth a buy
I'm guessing that if you're strong enough you can wipe out the pirates?
Free on humble bundle now. Just got it.
Just had an email seeing this is free on the humble store. Here to see if it's worth being free
This game is gold. I am really sad there was not a second one. I would happily pay a lot for a new SOASE.
Surprise! It's just been announced!
I've had Sins of A Solar Empire for years, what do I get with the "Rebellion"?
I bay it this year (2020) and it is still a great game.

Thanks and its only 12 euros on steam right now. cheers mate
Free right now on Humble Bundle
i think i'll buy this when i get paid, need a good rts :)

Hmm if you like micromanaging space battles, try Star Wars Empire at War. It's kinda old, but it's got a ton of mods.
picked it up free on a giveaway, need to get around to play it
Picked it up for 8 quid
it is on a sale for 3 dollars I'm gonna get it
Is this still the best space RTS now in 2020?
Idk might go to stellaris
Have you tried the star trek mods for this?
Fun game. When I’m on lazy mode Injust be advent rebel and win by culture from their cheap temples
Another good review Mack. Keep it up.
can anyone tell me, is this the max graphic capability? is it possible to make it better? i like this game but the graphics look slightly shoddy.
+Krithik Balraj it can be turned up to be better but the game is relatively dated but the gameplay is fantastic
