    It is amazing, after years in reactionary circles, how much I’ve heard about Sarkeesian and yet how little I know about her. I only watched an video directly from Sarkeesian last year, despite hating her and publicly saying that I hated her and why for years. It’s crazy, I didn’t even really hate her, I didn’t know her at all. I hated the idea I thought she represented, my problems put into a person who isn’t responsible for them at all.

The biggest threats to my sources of joy at the time appeared to be Christian politicians and concerned parents on one side and feminists and sjws on the other. So, basically you admit to, at the very least, participating in GamerGate discussion in unproductive ways in the past? Maybe you even once insulted Sarkeesian? Are you suggesting that maturing not only meant that you started to argue more polite and productively, but also that you changed your views regarding Sarkeesian her critique of pop-culture and videogames?
      If all of this is correct, then during GamerGate you were the type of person that made it harder for others (like me) to actually argue productively against so-called 'SJW's, and now that you've 'matured' you still make it harder for others (like me) by projecting your personal youthfull anger on all the other people involved with the disccusion surrounding 'GamerGate'.
      There is nothing wrong with changing your mind, or evaluating ones psychological motivations, but don't project your personal situation on others. And don't confuse it for a rebuttal of the arguments.

      Basically, Anita shot herself in the foot; presumably, she got too much money which meant she had to make more videos then planned, resulting in videos where she tried to sell a narrative that was just plainly wrong, or at times. pretty irrelevant (women sits differently than men in Destiny. Really?)
      This is compounded by the fact that she then, at times, acted despicably, she lied and she stole footage from other content creators.

    1. I watched Sarkeesian's videos when they came out, before (or without noticing) all the rage and hate, or any other background information, and found already back then that *some* of them were poorly argued, researched, and she cherry-picking examples, if not outright demonstrating she didn't even know the source material.

      Honestly same. I thought she was at best applying a narrow view of feminism onto specific games and painting it as a medium wide issue (looking you "damsel in distress" with Peach, as if that's not the whole point of the character. Hell we don't need a complex character to Doomguy) and at worse being completely ignorant of the works she was critical of. However there's no excuse for death threats

      I kind of agree. I came to her videos when I only vaguely knew about the whole gamergate thing. It's been a while so I can't remember any specific examples of cherry picking. But I do know that there were some videos I disagreed with, and others I found eye-opening. The Mrs. Male video in particular was very interesting, it was a trope I hadn't really thought about before and it kind of speaks to how we see male as the default. I agree with Joe in that it's applying a narrow viewpoint to a big medium. And that's kind of the point: seeing things from a different point of view. Whether or not you agree with the extent of the problem, or even if it's a problem at all, it's still interesting to think about. It's not like she was being extreme or anything, sure she has a bias but for the most part she was presenting her points pretty neutrally, pointing out a trend and letting you draw your own conclusions. The people who believe she is some man-hating, strawmanning villain either assume her behavior just from the fact that she's a feminist, or watch videos of other people who misrepresent her views.

    As a human being who was thoroughly bullied, why humans get so angry at other humans for innocuous things has been a subject of fascination for as long as I have had memory. I have been trying to figure out what my crime against the status quo has been since I understood that there was one, and that understanding came at 6. I realized that being the youngest child got me different treatment than my older siblings, and made the mistake of having that realization out loud and both my older siblings thought I was bragging about that fact when I was just coming to terms with it, and things got even worse at home. At school was the worst. I won't get into the details, but what is the sickness troubling the soul of humanity is kind of what I've been obsessed with for as long as people have been hurting me with it
    This series helped me realize why anger is important. We see it in others for the wrong things, and people try to demonize anger and violence on the whole. But those are forces of change, we get angry because we've been hurt and because change is necessary when we've been harmed. But it can't be blind
    If it's time to be angry, you must be angry with both eyes open, and be ready to step back if there is a third party in the blast range who had nothing to do with that rage's subject.
    We must be consciously, purposefully angry if we want to get anything done.

That said, I am angry about things that you didn't mention in the video. I am angry about the rise of the alt-right, white nationalists, identitarians, or whatever Neo-Nazis call themselves now. I am angry that there are mass shooting almost every day or two, and that they are frequently done by bigoted people. I am angry about double standards, even when they exist among my fellow progressives- perhaps even more angered by that, because I expect better from people who otherwise share my values. I am angry about corporate greed, and the destruction of the environment. I am angry about so many things, that I struggle to name them all here.
    I was happier when I was younger, perhaps because I was unaware of these problems, but also because some of them weren't as bad as they are now. Part of me wishes that I could go back to that blissful ignorance, but most of me is glad that I am aware now, so that I able to fight for change in the ways that I can. It is still frustrating though, that I am now burdened by this awareness of just how f*cked up everything is currently. I wish that I could still be aware and fight for change, but be more Zen about it, and not let it effect my happiness.

      You're not really "Angry Jack" in the sense that this video series is talking about. This is dealt with in the next video more specifically, but "Angry Jack" refers to something more than just someone who is angry.
      It's about the specific sort of anger that comes from the mere *existence* of something that seems objectively to be rather innocuous. Anger about mass shootings is a valid response; it's causing the death of innocent human lives. Anger at rising fascism is a valid response; it promises to cause pain and strife if it gets too big. And so forth.
      "Angry Jack" is primarily angry about something that should not provoke that *level* of anger that they give off. Someone making a video suggesting that videogames are part of cultural media and thus reflect the sexism in that culture should not invoke sufficient anger to yield *death threats.* That's "Angry Jack"'s kind of anger.

Though not enough for me to go to Nebula TV and support Sarkeesian, since they are friends apparently. Basically problem is Anita Sarkeesian is alot like Donald Trump, they both have surface level of knowledge about what they talk about, Trump knows about business (or conning atleast) but knows zero about politics, just like Anita Sarkeesian knows about feminist activism but has zero knowledge about video games. But Lindsay Ellis LEGIT has geek knowledge on it so she knows from her perspective what she is talking about, heck i would say if you watch "top 11 dumbasses in distress" by Nostalgia Critic, that too is informative because again Nostalgia Critic knows his stuff

  • @EnderPryde
    @EnderPryde 6 років тому +45

    So... I think, at least for me, that the issue I have with Anita compared with other feminist video essayists like Lindsey Ellis is that she's just not... intellectually honest enough.
    Using Lindsey as the example, whenever she makes a mistake and misattributes a narrative device or idea, she typically corrects herself in some capacity, whether through tumblr, another video, twitter, or any of her blog posts. When she erroneously described certain aspects of the five act structure in one of her videos, she corrected herself later and admitted error, citing that it had literally been years since even needing to work with these ideas. This is fine, and demonstrates an openness to positive critique and a willingness to grow as a person.
    Anita just seems to only ever double down on her mistakes. If someone calls out her errors, even in a positive critique, she doesn't adjust course or correct herself.
    Does this mean she deserves the vitriol and death threats? Of course not. But I'm just describing why I'm angry with her.
    I think why MOST people are angry with her is honestly just a format issue. She's demonstrably wrong about data points (and that's fine by itself) but she's formatted and pitches her body of work as an educational piece compared to the philosophical/opinion piece it actually is.

It's not (usually) to the same scale but if you're in middle or high school it can feel/be just as bad.
    I say weird thing because most of that is now gone with geek things being openly accepted before most of these people online were old enough to experience it. Also that taste of oppression should lead them to be more empathetic about it but instead they use it as an excuse.

      There is a quote from Rich Burlew's character Durkon Thundershield,"...Most people talk about the seductive power of evil but I think good is just as slippery a slope. Doing good, even seeing other people do good, feels good. Eventually that feeling gets to you. Sometimes i think the only reason more evil folks dont succumb to it is that it feels bad to realize how bad you've been. Most would rather pretend to feel nothing than to experience that pain."
      Speaking as a former angry bullied kid, empathy requires a level of self reflection, but that requires a level or self honesty as well which can be painful to rationalize with the idea that you are a "good person," if what you were doing wasnt something a "good person" would do. Rather than admit they made a mistake and take the time to acknowledge the changes that should be made they'd rather make the person expressing concern out to be the "bad guy" and make them feel bad for saying anything. Denial leading to deflection leading demonization, leading to call for the destruction of the apparent foe... all for pointing out how its kind of unfortunate that women are largely considered narratively expendable in a large chunk of gaming media, relegated to prizes to be won, or damsels to be saved. For me, I didn't like her because she often blatantly lied in her videos, or misrepresented things a lot of the time. All you have to do is look at her critique of Hitman where she shows the player beating the crap out of a stripper in the dressing room and dumping her body into a dumpster. That mission in that game did not include the objective of beating up strippers. In fact, most people don't even go into the room where the strippers are, it's just not necessary, and even if you do, why would you beat the crap out of one when you actually lose points for doing so? It's not the only case, but it was one of the major ones that stood out to me.

    • @c0nd0rd4myt
      @c0nd0rd4myt 3 роки тому +7

      She actually rebuts this idea, largely that you can completely ignore this metric and continue playing the game uninterrupted.
      It's a rather obtuse defense of the content, pretending that people won't go do things they aren't supposed to do because it's more fun.
      You're not supposed to use the prostitutes in GTA, and also not supposed to run over them to get your money back, but that and any other actions to get your Wanted score to go up is not only fun, but a major draw for the franchise.
      Simcity let you deliberately create disasters, which aren't supposed to happen, in order to destroy your own creation, the way knocking down your block castle as a kid can be just as fun as it was to build.
      Maybe it's just me, having come from the NES and SNES era, that the idea of being punished is just losing abstract points is laughable.

  • @WildKat25
    @WildKat25 5 років тому +3

    Angry Jack is angry for a reason. There is also a very good reason that most females aren't Angry Jackies.
    The difference is in their expected and society-backed coping mechanisms.
    Females (when hurt, harrassed, or worse) will usually if not immediately TELL SOMEONE what happened, how it makes them feel, and they ask the person they tell "what should I do now?" This is a HEALTHY way to cope with pain caused by loved ones and strangers. It helps them to get an UNBIASED PERSPECTIVE on what actions the female needs to take in order to HEAL and, if lucky, successfully prosecute the offender if they acted illegally.
    Males DON'T LIKE AND DON'T WANT to talk about uncomfortable or potentially ABUSIVE THINGS that are happening TO THEM. It is really sad, because by refusing to TALK the men are MAKING THEMSELVES MORE LIKELY to COMMIT SUICIDE SUCCESSFULLY. If men were FORCED to TALK IT OUT, they would RESENT the person that forced them; but they would ultimately be HEALTHIER and MASSIVELY DECREASE their LIKELIHOOD to even THINK ABOUT HURTING THEMSELVES.
    The PROBLEM is that society LOVES to NOT believe most female AND MALE victims and will in fact BLAME THEM for the abuse or violence they suffered. The problem is that men blame other MEN AND WOMEN for being victimized by another man and convince by-standing women not to believe other men and women because HE/SHE SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED the THREAT of OTHER MEN and s/he should NOT EXPECT the same FREEDOMS that MEN HAVE. Men also LOVE the idea that good women don't wander at night UNLESS THEY ARE WHORES. Too bad the truth is that women are BUSY WORKING and IMPROVING themselves and WOMEN AND MEN DESERVE the RIGHT to EXPECT that both other MEN & WOMEN will help a victim REGARDLESS if s/he COULD have been more prepared to not get victimized.
    How do I know all this and where are all my facts? Simple. I have a BACHELOR in PSYCHOLOGY with a Concentration in BIOLOGY and I am a PROFESSIONAL in the PSYCHOLOGICAL FIELD. All of my facts are from more than 20 different peer-reviewed TEXTBOOKS that are in their 3rd or 4th editions with regards to HEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS when helps others overcome mental illness and stress. I was TESTED and REQUIRED to get MORE THAN 80% of my exams CORRECTLY to PASS and I was on the DEAN'S LIST for a FULL YEAR in my THIRD YEAR of University. To be on the DEAN'S LIST my grades had to be in the TOP TEN PERCENT and this was DURING THE YEAR when COMPETITION IS AT IT'S HIGHEST; because all the University Dropouts are gone and ONLY the REAL UNIVERSITY GRADUATES are still THERE.
    So yes, Angry Jack's are REAL and THEY HURT OUR SOCIETY by being ALLOWED to keep their "INNOCENCE" and CLAIM "IGNORANCE." So I say this to everyone and beg everyone to WAKE THEM THE FUCK UP BECAUSE NOBODY HAS TIME TO DEAL WITH THEIR DUMB "BLINDERS ON ALWAYS" LA-LA-LAND THEY LIVE IN!
    WHITE MEN ARE IN POWER AND THEY ARE PURPOSELY ALLOWING THEMSELVES TO BE TRAINED, TRICKED, MENTORED, AND BRAINWASHED INTO THINKING FEMINISM IS THE ENEMY. REALITY CHECK, STUPID YOU ARE THE REASON FOR YOUR OWN OPPRESSION!

    I can provide an answer. Downward economic pressure. We live in a society that is highly stratified into hierarchies of wealth. For a couple of generations there has been uoward economic mobility for a large swath of (mostly) white people (what we generally call the middle class today).
    However that has changed recently. Gen x is the first of generation of white middle class people to face downward economic pressure since 1929. The group you are talking to primarily is this generation, they are more economically disadvantaged then their parents, they work longer hours for less pay than their parents and vastly fewer will ever own a home than their parents. And they know it. This is why they are angry.

    You can dislike Anita Sarkeesian without hating her. I was overall very disappointed in her work. I started with her videos about games, long after the project was funded. She made some excellent points that really impressed me. For example, she pointed out in her Ms. Pac Man episode how, in Thomas Was Alone, the character of Clare was a blue square as opposed to a pink shape. She also credited the ending of the first Monkey Island game as putting the female NPC Elaine Marley, in a position where she was not objectified. I think it was in the damsel in distress episode. Most of her comments ewer about the types of games I don't play, mostly action adventure. She explained how the camera is always positioned in such a way to objectify women in third-person games. More importantly (even though I don't play those games, I was impressed by that point), how most female characters were just a male character reskinned. She showed the female avater watching a female stripper in game I've never played. I think a Mass Effect.
    I think my disappointment came when I started getting into her comments about TV. She seemed outraged at how pregnancy was exploited in science fiction, even though it's a difficult moment for women. She took examples from Star Trek. First of all, each Star Trek series was trying to make 22 episodes a year and they were using any concept they could think of. Also, Star Trek tends to be an allegory of real problems. Would avoiding that problem been better? In general she seems to consider, with no justification whatsoever, that ideas that most likely came out of necessity actually came out of malice. The last video I saw with her was her first video about the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, the one played by Jodie Whittaker. (I personally was braced for the worst because I had mostly seen her in roles where she was a weeping housewife and I was blown away by her as the Doctor. Unfortunately, her showrunner, Chris Chibnall, did, according to me, an awful job with both of his seasons. It was a terrible waste of her incredible performance.) Sarkeesian criticized the episode that portrayed Rosa Parks as a topic that was out of bounds for British producers. The Doctor travels through time and space, met Nixon a couple of years earlier, lost track of Amy in New York, but Rosa Parks was, according to Sarkeesian, an forbidden topic. Also, she complained about American characters portrayed by British actors. This confirmed my impression that her opinions are overall pretty biased and not, or maybe no longer, that constructive. While her observations were undeniably astute, she definitely seemed to add motivations to those observations that came out of nowhere. I'm not a fan. That being said, she clearly is a great contribution to her field and other people may have a better opinion of her work that I do. (Does this make me a hater?)

    For the record: I consider myself a gamer, and I do not agree with everything in Sarkeesian's trope vs women in video games series. She oversimplified some things and interpreted others in a particularly ungenerous manner.
    But that's now why I'm commenting. I'm commenting to point out that THIS IS OKAY.
    Video games are literature. She was applying literary criticism on literary works. I don't have to agree with everything she's saying to see that what's she's doing is perfectly valid. The outrage surrounding Sarkeesian was absolutely bananas and unnecessary.
