Loved your reaction. Robert Downey, Jr’s mom did not want him to do this part. His career was just getting started again after some legal problems. She thought it was too risky. Ironically, though, Ben Stiller got most of the heat for playing a mentally challenged person. Also, this may be my favorite Tom Cruise role. 😂
Aside from the brilliant writing, stellar cast, hilarious comedy, and solid action, this movie has one of the greatest soundtracks ever. "What do you mean, You People?" "What do YOU mean, You People?" 🤣
The vast majority of black people I've seen review or reference this movie 1) understood what the blackface was all about (the whole movie is a mockery of the entire acting profession) and 2) found it remarkable how well RDJ playing the part.
It’s better to quit than to step on a land mine. I didn’t catch on to Tom Cruise until the end, either. It’s the voice that I recognized earlier. It was nagging at me but I couldn’t place it. Cruise has a very distinct voice. When he said, “A nutless monkey could do your job”, it clicked.
The facial expression Jay Baruchel makes when Ben Still says you people always cracks me up😂😂. I think Tropic Thunder will be 16 years old this year and it’s as good or better than the comedies coming out now. Edit: Ben Stiller not Ben Still😂
The part, with the guy that is kneeling with his hands raised to the air while the enemies are shooting into his back, looked exactly the same as the scene in "Platoon".
It's funny because this shows you just how amazing makeup can be. Two major actors and yet they didn't recognize either of them. I'm 10 minutes in and I don't think they realize the studio head is Tom Cruise rofl
I was same with Downey Jr the acting was brilliant he had me in hysterics one minute tears the next,I'll never look @ tom cruise the same way especially when he's doing mission impossible.
The look on Ryl's face when Tom Cruise started playing the song almost had me crying, LOL! Her jaw literally fell open. Or as Jyn would say, "I almost had a crisis-es..."
Two things that don't get noticed too often in this movie : - When Speed Tugman and his manager talk on the phone about Speed adopting -- the kid shown there is holding a knife -- the same thing that the second kid on the bridge scene is holding -- kind of meaning that he's such a horrible dad that both "his kids" try to murder him . - Also, Tom Cruise is acting as a Movie studio executive or president -- and his name is Les Grossman -- (i.e. less gross man) , meaning that studio executives and presidents are even more gross & ugly (in looks and behavior) than his character is . It's the little things in this movie that matter ... -- like both of the black guys surviving ... , as you noticed .
I laughed hard almost all the way through this movie - even after seeing it several times. It makes me feel a little sad when some people watch and don't get various scenes. Maybe it just takes multiple viewings or isn't their "cup of tea."
One thing I love about rewatching this movie is the intro. Your first watch, it is super confusing and you immediately forget about it. But once you've seen the movie, the intro is all of the sudden this perfect way to introduce each character. Alpa Chino is the young entrepreneur trying to grow his brand any way he can (including playing this character and hiding his sexuality). Tugg Speadman is the action superstar who can't do serious films and is fading into obscurity. Kirk Lazarus is the pretty/bad boy who takes wild roles and gets academy awards for them. Jeff Portnoy is the comedian with a drug problem trying to be taken seriously. Just a great quick way to establish character.
If you “couldn’t make it today”, it wouldn’t be widely distributed today. It wouldn’t be popular today. You could make this movie today because it works. The writing works and the jokes work. If someone could write an edgy comedy this well today, it could be made into a movie no problem. Here’s the thing: Ben Stiller and the cast were willing to face the consequences if the jokes fell flat. They knew the risks. Same deal with Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles. Political correctness is nothing new. There were offended folks back then when the movies were released. Do you think that there weren’t racial tensions in the 70s or the 2000s? The tired old phrase, “you can’t make movies like that today” is the tired and weak excuse of unfunny comedians whose shock shtick is tired. Don’t repeat the cliches of hacks or people will think you’re simple.
The intro at the first with Jack Black playing all the same characters was probably spoofing what Eddie Murphy does in The Nutty Professor. Has the same type of table scene with farting and stuff lol Speaking of movies where someone played a mentally challenged person really well is What's Eating Gilbert Grape. A young Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. It's a really good movie.
Virtual hug! You're lame? No way! I can watch until the end because you two have some of the best personalities of anyone I have seen on youtube. It was great to watch you two react to this classic. Ben Stiller is one of the great comedy actors of our time...Robert Downey Jr. is one of the great action/quirky/funny actors of our time...and of course, Tom Cruise is, well, he's Tom Cruise. No more needs to be said about him. Everyone else was great, too!
The layers upon layers of satire in this film are insane. Everything was over the top: the violence, the blackface, the method acting, the R-word, the N-word, every level and layer just pushed to the extreme. The blackface in particular has garnered a lot of conflicting opinions. My opinion is that, in the context of this film, it is an extremely pointed satire OF blackface: that's the whole point of it. Using blackface to point out how ridiculous it is. In that sense I find it 100% justified. Then again, I'm not black, so maybe it hits differently for different people, and that's fair. Like Blazing Saddles, everyone has a different reaction to racism and depictions of racism, even when it is part of a satirical look at that very subject. -My 2¢
Virtual Hug ❤ I'm so happy you guys liked this movie. This movie is a perfect example that you can push past the limits of social correctness and still make a great film. As always, you two make me smile and laugh with your reactions ❤
You guys are fun to watch - You might want to watch this from the very beginning again, now that you know it's a parody and cynical look at the film industry and stars in general. The second time is just as funny and you get more of the jokes, since you're trying to understand the absurdity.
I will never know which is funnier, black Robert Downey Jr or bald Tom Cruise.
black rdj
😂😂
Black RDJ is funnier
That’s a close one, but black RDJ.
RDJ did that
One of the best comedies of all time. Everyone kills it in this film.

His dancing scenes are art!

40:06 I think Robert Downey Jr. would consider it high praise for you to say, “The craziest part was the TWO black guys”😂Great reaction ❤
🤣🤣👍🏾
The body suit and dancing was something Tom Cruise insisted on as the conditions for him taking the part
And the fat hands!

"What do YOU mean, You People?" 🤣
As a black man I thought RDJ in this movie was funny AF and there’s got to be a point where you got to just laugh at something’s
The vast majority of black people I've seen review or reference this movie 1) understood what the blackface was all about (the whole movie is a mockery of the entire acting profession) and 2) found it remarkable how well RDJ playing the part.
When robert downey jr says he diesnt break character till after the dvd commentary he means it, he did the dvd commentary as the character its great
The only time I've ever watched a commentary, and it was worth it 😂
This is a great topper for all the war movies y'all have been watching lol
This was so EPIC!! 🔥🤣
Hah! I was just finishing up your Barry Reactions when this dropped
'If he gets untied during the night, we know who did it' 😂
How did Rick Peck (Matthew McConaughey) get there with the Tivo and how did he get out? He took the G5 and used it to rescue Ben Stiller!
Jean Claude Van Damme most famous movie “Bloodsport” is about a real life guy who made it all up 😂. But that movie is “Damme” good.
I remember watching this in theaters and being so confused with those fake trailers 😂😂😂

Yeah the opening spoofs a few war movies like Platoon. Most people seem to miss that.
I guess you could say Sgt. Lincoln Osiris didn't survive, since Kirk Lazarus (R.D.Jr.) abandoned the character while he was in the jungle.
Haha true.
"They found me in an old refrigerator box trying to reenter Earth's atmosphere."

Lance was Lance Bass of the 90s pop group N*SYNC.

I've never seen Jyn laugh so hard.
You made me laugh, too!

This was the last time anyone held up a mirror to Hollywood. Everyone is too scared of getting cancelled now. Brilliant movie!
Explain what "cancelled" means.

The jokes are so dumb but then you hear the stuff that goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood and somehow it becomes almost perfect lol
6:47 "Can Speedman muh-muh-muh make audiences happy???" 😂😂😂😂

6:45 Ben Stiller's wife. She's in a few of his movies. Probably best known as Marcia Brady in the Brady Bunch movie remakes.

An excellent film hosted by two excellent young ladies .
there is a film called "the man who knew too little" (bill murray) and it is pretty good. very funny and similar idea
Lance ...is Lance Bass, who was a member of the boyband NSYNC, who famously came out as gay.
