The Wall Song is a tribute born out of the kindred creative spirits of poet Judy Gorman King and songwriters Mitch Townley and Brad Dunse. Mitch heard Judy present her poem, The Spirit Of The Wall, at a Nashville benefit for homeless veterans in March, 2008. She gave him permission to use the poem as the inspirational foundation for the song. Mitch invited his good friend, singer/songwriter Brad Dunse to collaborate with him and the project was underway. The Wall Song was recorded in Nashville in July, 2008 by artist J.P. Williams and produced by Chip Martin.
We pray that The Wall Song will honor our surviving and fallen heroes of the Vietnam War as well as any who have served in the Armed Forces.

I know some that fought & lived. Would have stayed gone if they knew people had no respect for them. They should not have been disrespected. I have so much more to say but can't think of any nice words for those that disrespect the ones that put their lives on the line for the ungrateful just as much as the grateful.

It took 25 years after I got home from Vietnam before the first person said “Welcome Home” to me. Some young girl saw me wearing my uniform in the airport when I was coming home & she called me a Son of a bitch! I told her, I’m not your brother, she went ballistic. As a combat veteran I can tell you from experience, there is nothing glorious about war. We deserved better when we came home.

In 1999 I finally felt that I was ready to visit the Wall. I found out I wasn't ready. It's the first time my wife ever saw me break down and cry. It's now 2024, 25 years have passed and I'm still not ready to return. I'm not ashamed to admit that even this song brings tears to my eyes. RIP my brothers.

I took my dad to The Wall in Oct 2012. It was his wish since returning from Vietnam to visit the wall. He layed a wreath at the base for his cousin who died there. As we walked away I had him turn around and watch as the people who were passing by stopped and read his wreath - looked at the picture of his cousin within the wreath. I told him: More than just you will be remembering him today dad. RIP Danny Crothers you are not forgotten

When my dad returned from Vietnam he returned to no fanfare or gratitude. When he arrived home a young girl spat in his face and called him names that I cannot repeat here. He stopped and wiped his face and told the girl that he pitied her. He then slowly walked away. I am glad to see the Americans of my generation welcoming our heroes home and treating them with respect.

Oh, don’t get me started on the VA, I was wounded & gassed (agent orange) it took 19 years of bullshit & mounds of paperwork & exams before I was classified as 100% service connected disabled. At first they were saying agent orange didn’t count & with therapy my leg would get better, all kinds of BS to prolong giving me the treatment , meds & pay that I deserve. I have to be examined twice a year to see if I’m still eligible for 100%, like my wound is going to go away & the nightmares will stop! Thank you for your nice comment.

my husband was a Marine in Viet Nam, he was a very decorated man, sharp shooter, recon. and saw and lived more then most could ever imagine. We had a chance to go to a reunion back in 1998 in Washington, It was the first time he had seen any of the men who were over there with him , he didnt know if they had made it back or not. We all went on a trip to the wall.. and I tell you the emotions were over whelming. You could feel the spirits of many of the men and women who's names are on that wall. Its a experience I'll never forget, and one my husband took to his grave with him.. as he couldn't handle the ghosts that haunted him on a daily basis and committed suicide in 2000.. So you see my heart goes out to all service men and women.. God Bless. and of course Semper Fi

So sorry for your loss. So many soldiers came back physically, but not mentally. My bro was in Nam and was never the same. I was the only one he would talk to about it. He eventually drank himself to death while he lived with me. I was in the Army, fortunately during peacetime, but I understood him. I hold the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge from Vietnam. The saddest sight at the Wall has to be the "Tree Vets," those soldiers who come so close to the names of their buddies that they reach the trees at the edge of the Memorial, then find themselves unable to continue on to the Wall itself. So many of us still have yet to even begin the journey. God bless them all.--Tom Reilly

Thank you for this thoughtful song. My cousin is on the wall. I remember the day he left for Vietnam, the day we found out he had been killed and the day of his funeral. I was only 12 at the time. He had always been good to me even though I was just a kid. When we met as a family after the funeral, I also remember looking into the crib to see the infant son he never got to meet and being sad he would never see his awesome Dad. Today I remembered Ronald Lowe and the sacrifice he so willingly made.

Got spit on when I wore my uniform home after discharge in '65. Now when someone says "Thank you for your service", the words ring hollow and have no meaning for me. I came home but don't consider myself one of "the lucky ones." The "lucky ones" lie in graves, and don't have memories of the carnage, the sounds of shells exploding and their companions being blown to smithereens, memories that keep them awake at night, afraid to sleep at times, still "over there", still hiding from Charlie.. One day peace will come to me, but until then, - - - -.

My English teacher played this song for our class. I don’t know about anyone else, but I can definitely tell you that I was crying. I don’t cry over much, but this one hit a nerve. I guess it was mainly because of what happened during the Vietnam war to all those poor men and afterward. I did not know much about the war then. She put many famous pictures around the room. It was like a snapshot of an era barely any of us could Understand. We were born around three decades after the war ended, but it felt like three millennia. I pray that our nation will learn the lessons of the Vietnam war and that the American people will learn to be respectful of the military. I pray that this war is not forgotten and that Vietnam veterans and all American veterans are remembered for their service and heroism and valor. This war affected everyone, but The effect it had was different than any other war in United States history. My mom was born to keep her dad out of Vietnam. Many men we know wanted to be in the war, but so many others did not. Yet, what they did, their service, their bravery, went unremembered and unappreciated. The American people did not want the war, but they took it out on the soldiers, instead of the government. The soldiers had already been through hell overseas, and then they went through it again on their own shores and in their own cities and towns. I am not saying that all Americans felt this way because I do not know and do not think that this was so. However, the soldiers did not get what they deserved. They were not praised ; they were not celebrated as heroes but were instead used as scapegoats. They were not treated with kindness; they were not regarded with respect. No one understood PTSD then, and many did not get the help they needed. I think it was a change in how Americans thought. Before that point, photographs from the Battlefield were a rarity. Even after photography was invented, it was very difficult to take fresh pictures. Before photography was invented, there were paintings of battles and war. Yet, the artist took that in his stride or painted it in his light. They were not exactly dramatized but romanticized, as war too often is. The Vietnam war was the first war in American history that the general public had pictures and videos of the battlefield. It horrified them; they could not imagine wha the soldiers were going through. They did not use this positively and used it against the military. Many people did not want to be in the war or to be involved in it at all. America was going through a lot of change because people started to have their own thoughts and started to not go along with what the government said. The Vietnam war was the first war in American history that the general public had pictures and videos of the battlefield. It horrified them; they could not imagine what the soldiers were going through. They did not use this positively and used it against the military. Many people did not want to be in the war or to be involved in it at all. America was going through a lot of change because people started to have their own thoughts and started to not go along with what the government said. The American culture also had a massive overhaul. As Mom put it, people should not have opinions if they are not involved. I Agree with this, especially in this context. So many people had opinions, but those people were not on the battlefield. They were not doing the fighting; they were not seeing their friends and comrades die in front of them. Opinions are valid, but I do not think they should have them if they are not involved. I really do not know what to think. I was not born then and thus really should not have opinions myself. I understand that and try to understand everything involved. This is one reason why I thank soldiers any chance I get. I want them to know that they are appreciated and remembered and that their efforts have not been forgotten and that they were not in vain. I want to tell them that if no one else remembered what they did, I do. I pray that every soldier will get the help he or she needs and that every soldier will be appreciated for their actions and efforts. To all Vietnam war veterans, thank you for your service! To all American veterans of any war that had US involvement, thank you for your service! God bless you all, and God bless America!

As a British army veteran from a colonial war my country and its people has forgot about, I was in Washington dc with my wife I have always wanted to pay my respects to those on the wall, I left a poppy and card that said gone but never will you be forgotten . Me and my fellow vets are fighting for our own recognition for our service to our country. The ironic thing about my visit to the wall is my name is on that wall my name is Michael clarke

You have done your job as a human protecting other. It takes a-lot of heart to give your life for another person. I thank all the fallen soldiers Who died trying. You will be the most respected. Never forgotten, i may not know all your names but that will never mean i will forget you. Thank you all Past, Present, and Future soldiers.

As a peacetime kid I can only ask, how could you not bless every Vietnam Veteran you meet? How could you doubt that war was never sweet? How could you ever be so naive that you would not wish them the mercy and forgiveness that God will forever meet to the heroic and the meek? God bless America for the Christian values it used to exceed.

Saw The Wall last month. I was own leave when my cousin was brought home. His name is on The Wall. He was first a Marine and was wounded. Was given a medical release. Then tried to get back in. The Army let him in and made him a tank comander...... that's when his name was put on the list for The Wall....He was a soldier threw and threw. 2 purple hearts, silver star and the best guy you could know!

Beautiful tribute to our guys and girls who served in Vietnam....it certainly took its toll on my generation. One day we were going to the Prom; the next we were going to funerals of our 19 or 20 year old friends, brothers & sisters, loved ones who died much too young. Thank you for your brave service! To those many Shasta County friends who paid the final sacrifice in Vietnam.

It is with respect and honor that I visit The Wall, because I am here and they are not, and I will never forget them. I will visit The Wall as long as I can just to rememer those whose names are on The Wall. I only wish I could do more.

Being British I am grateful my country stayed out of Vietnam. I have seen that wall in Washington and in 1998 I went to Vietnam. I cannot imagine the hardships that those poor American boys went through, the constant terror never knowing when danger could come, the heat and the hostility of their own people when returning home. I remember a woman I met in Vietnam, I complimented her on her excellent English, she told me she had been married to a GI who promised to take her to America but he was killed in the Mekong Delta, so much misery and grief all around only time will heal the scars. Though my country stayed out of Vietnam and I know no one who fought in that war I give our American cousins my respect

+Vapin Chevy Thank you, and thanks to your father. My own father is dead now,(He died in 1998) he fought in Normandy in WW2, I remember he never talked about the war, most vets don't , they just want to forget, not wanting to be reminded of that terrible times in their lives. Yet I can still see my father with tears in his eyes when he watched on TV as the queen placed a wreath of poppies on the Cenotaph (Memorial) in London. 50 years on and the sight of the Queen laying the wreath still brought tears to his eyes, somethings a person never forgets, no matter how hard he tries. I believe all veterans are deserving of respect, whether they fought in WW2, Vietnam or the Gulf, for people like me who has never been to war we cannot even begin to imagine what the vets went through and with many of them are still going though, the dreams and nightmares that will torment them for the rest of their lives.

Awesome song, and video. I heard somebody say if WWII was the greatest generation, the men and women that served in Vietnam were the greatest of their generation. I agree. Most didn't even want to be there, but they fought with honor, to protect their buddies. And got treated like shit when they came home. I was 17 when it ended, and 18 when I joined the Marines. I served with a lot that were there. I was proud to meet every one of them. Welcome home guys.

Thank you for this video and this song. My uncle survived the Vietnam War to come home and die many years later from Agent Orange. In 2003, when my daughter's class went to Washington, DC it was over Memorial Day. We were at The Wall and I was given the honor to rub a name for a woman who couldn't reach the one she wanted; it was the least I could do. I just wish I could have done more.
There are 3 things to do every day: Kiss a baby, pet a dog, and say Thank you to a veteran. Also, this Memorial Day pray for all those soldiers who didn't come home. They deserve to be honored.
