Left Behind: Offerings to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall [HD]

  • Since its dedication in 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been a place of reflection, remembrance, healing and for some - profound sorrow. In the years that followed, visitors have left offerings at The Wall to remember their fallen loved ones and comrades.
But what you may not know, is that those objects are collected every night by National Park Service rangers and go to a warehouse in Hyattsville, Maryland to be stored, cataloged, and preserved.
The warehouse and collection are closed to the public.
Of the many examples of heroism, sacrifice, loss, and healing we were shown - a few stood out.
    These are their stories.

Thanks for posting! My buddy left me all of his albums and some other stuff until he got back, except he never made it back. I still have every one. Every time I go to the wall I leave a laminated color photocopy of his favorite album with his initials that he wrote on the cover and on the back I write some memories of him and about some of the good times we had before he left. I am not very emotional but these visits are the only times besides my parents passing that I have ever cried, the wall does that; it affects me that much. Even though I see veterans grieving at the wall I can't even begin to imagine what visiting the wall does to those who lost buddies that they fought with when they see their names. THANKS to all who lost their lives for this country and to all those who have served for this country, you will not be forgotten, especially you JB and what you could have been RIP.

2 cousins on the Wall, and I have a last mission to go out on. Robert Parrish needs to go home to his brothers. I gave my word to his widow in 1992 I would take him there. His tags will be left behind, and his Marine ITR photo. Above all else, accomplish the mission...Semper Fi...

    Folds of Honor 09/07/2020
    by Gerardo Molinar
You have now joined the ranks of those who made the Ultimate Sacrifice,
The memories of you for your loved ones, will now have to suffice
You knew the risk when you made the decision to answer the call,
Without hesitation you went back for your brother as you saw him fall.
"You'll be proud to know he died as a Hero" is what they were told,
As tears give way to emotions they couldn't withhold.
Your loved ones start to doubt that if your sacrifice was worth your life,
You left behind your family and made a widow your loving wife.
The Church service was beautiful and your Eulogy written with love,
The priest then commends your soul to the Lord above.
The 3 round volley echoes are drowned out as Taps begins to play,
Another Hero is layed to rest among the rows of Brothers and Sisters today.
The Flag is folded carefully, given to your wife on behalf of a Grateful Nation,
Folds of Honor for the flag, for which you died without hesitation.
It is displayed in the homes of families in a case with dignity,
A reminder that love of their Country was based on loyalty.
The Folds of Honor is given in honor for their Service from a grateful Nation,
To our Military and First Responders for their Sacrifice and Dedication.
Let us respect their memory and stop the Desecration of our Flag,
We must defend our Country from enemies within of any further attacks.

Thank you for this video, very well done and insightful, loved hearing the stories, I definitely want to go to Washington D.C. and see the wall, to pay respect to those veterans who served before me, from a U.S. Army vet('89-'92)

You answered the call and gave service to your Country when she needed you,
You enlisted like many others, side by side training that you went thru.
Friendships and strong bonds were formed while training together,
Sent off to fight in Foreign lands so that Freedom reigns forever.
A brotherhood forged by fire in the struggles to survive the war,
Etched forever in your memories are the faces who are no more.
Grateful to be alive and finally coming home at last,
You will always remember the names K.I.A added already long and vast.
But there is still those who haven't made it home just yet,
Those P.O.W/M.I.A are the ones that we must never forget.
Until they are all accounted for and finally brought home,
Our Nations Sons sent off to war whose fate is still unknown.
There will always be a void in our Nation's heart never to be filled,
As long as one of her sons remains P.O.W or M.I.A still.
Nations must put Politics aside and try to work with each other,
To finally bring peace of mind to all those Fathers and Mothers.
Let us come together as a Nation and to our Government implore,
Bring home and account for all our P.O.W/M.I.A from all the wars.

I visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 2099 whilst on holiday to The US. I was deeply moved and impressed. Thanks for this video which answered the question I asked myself back then, ie "What happens to the objects left behind?". Now I know and I am deeply moved again. I promise to visit the Memorial again whilst I am still young enough to travel...I am 70 years old and a British ex-serviceman. Thing like these are important and should never be forgotten. God Bless America ...may our countries always be friends and allies. Alan, U.K.

This is very emotional. I grew up in Canada and was born a few years after the war ended. I don’t know if this is appropriate but I’d like to share a story. While going to university in the early 90’s, I came across an old Life magazine from 1969. It featured an article from May that showed how many soldiers were killed that week. I was curious and looked at all of the names and pictures. What I saw were young people who were the same age I was, and taken so soon. One picture resonated with me in particular. It was of PFC Keith Kahlstorf from Iowa. Something about the picture showed a young man who looked like he embodied every positive trait you would want to see in a person and an invincibility in his eyes. Not a week has gone by since where I haven’t thought about Keith especially whenever I was dealing with stress or a challenge. 28 years as a police officer brought me no shortage of these situations. I didn’t know Keith obviously. But I would like to thank him for being an inspiration. I have the ultimate respect for all Vietnam veterans. I thank you all for your courage, sacrifice, and service. May all of you get the respect and peace you so richly deserve. 🙏❤️
