    An excellent review. I watched others, and read a lot. Yours is by far the best. This review was instrumental in my purchasing one. Thanks. (From San Jose, CA.)

    My mom just got a lease on a 2020 specked about the same as your tester coming out to around 100k. The owner of the dealership used the car over the summer so she ended up getting the monthly payment the same as the base model (80k) for that money it’s really nice. I took it out today for a drive and was amazed with the way it rode and drove. The rear end was happy to dance around, it was quick, and well composed though bends and rough pavement. I was surprised considering it’s an old lady Mercedes (sorry mom). Sadly she will never pound it around the way I did. I would like to drive a Mercedes with this powertrain In a model that was lighter weight and maybe a little bit more rigid. However I did feel that the convertible was In fact rigid which also surprised me. My mom came from gle43 last gen, and let me tell you that car was hot garbage. It rode like trash because of the suspension setup, it was so poor. In comfort mode the airbags were Inflated most of the way and the car just felt so strange because the airbags were soft but the shocks underneath were so stiff. It also didn’t feel like it was of as high a quality as the e53 cabriolet.

    Twincharging (turbo and super) is rare in cars mainly because of the drag both systems have at start and low speeds. The turbo needs the exhaust to spool up and the supercharger is belt driven and needs to spool up as well. Mercedes is using the new 48 volt system to power a battery which powers a small electric supercharger to solve the low speed issue without the drag on the system you'd normally get. Quite clever, actually. Not an inexpensive solution but not an inexpensive car. Of course, the previous solution for an E53 was to drop a V8 under the hood, but hey, efficiency matters these days.

    The first car I ever drove was an inline 6 Benz! Loved that car. We drove it all the way to Dubai in the summer once. They don't make em like they used to.
    I was looking forward to hear your thoughts on the 48v systems, they have lots of potential once they mature. According to one of BMW's engineers, they are working on Gen II systems that'll push triple digits power figures.
    Back to AMG, rumor has it that 48v systems will show up on a new series above 63, it'll be called 70 (V8+48v), the first two cars will be the G70 AMG & GT70 ... Dis Gun B Gud ... ;)
    As to how much I'd pay for the 48v system if it was offered as an option? RAM are the only ones who offer it as option, it cost $1,450, but it doesn't include a supercharger of course. I'd say $2,000 ~ $2,500 sounds reasonable for an AMG tuned one.
    That is one sweet 300SL! Looking forward to hear your thoughts about the CLS, I have mixed feelings about it.
    As always, excellent work, M!

    I really hope Lexus decides to double down on performance hybrids. It’s honestly my favorite kind of powertrain. By the way, the manual for the E450 and E53 say you can put regular gas. Also, I’d pay $85,000 for this car. Not $100,000

    This might be my next car, but id prefer to let depreciation work for me and pick this thing up for around 80k which would be much easier to swallow. Or go for the used E400 and save another 20k... now that would be a nice car for the price

    I would not spec a car with Carbon Fiber beside of a Supercar. - I think there are better looking options out there as its not even for saving weight.

  • @Link_1129
    @Link_1129 5 років тому

    To your question, *optional* carbon fiber on an *AMG* ?!
    They're probably charging about $1,200, but the most I'd be willing to pay for something that should at least be a reduced-cost option on all but the craziest AMGs would be $400.

    Personally I think that the electric side of the auto industry is still too new for me to buy an electrified or full electric vehicle, what's being done now is very impressive but I'd still like to give it another 5-10 years

      Rick Hutton I can actually see great purpose in hybrids. I dont like full electric, but although they have a point, have you seen Tesla acceleration? Its all because of instant torque, so why not add a mild hybrid system thats gonna give an extra 200+ nm of torque, but still stays a 95% gas car.

    • @timonxDlol
      @timonxDlol 5 років тому +1

      whiteandnerdytuba it‘s not a 63 but still an amg. It seems like people ignore the early times of amg... there was more than only v8 cars. There even was a c32 amg

    • @whiteandnerdytuba
      @whiteandnerdytuba 5 років тому

      timonxDlol I'm old enough to remember the c450 amg sport. Then after changing nothing it became the amg 43. The v8 doesn't mean it's an amg, there's v12 amg. Suspension engine etc makes it an amg, it's more than just a badge. It's got almost the same power plant as the gle

    Your analysis is wrong.
    The instant torque has nothing to do with the inline six.
    The instant torque is due to the electric motor.
    Just skip the engine and go straight electric

Since then a barrage of Cadillac, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Lexus, Volvo, Mazda - hell even a side by side (nobody watched that one - ua-cam.com/video/hQMBbbfyrHM/v-deo.html) and yes, A LOT of Porsche . . . But it's Kumo picking that last one:)

      Not going to lie, I didn't know how good we had it here until I went on vacation to other countries. Take Malaysia for example, an abundance of well-off people. But they make one-to-one currency as we do in the States, if I make $1 in the U.S., they make 1 ringgit as well, not the converted ~4 ringgit. Yet their cars are obviously the converted price, and often double the converted the price for luxury vehicles. I can't imagine paying $80,000 for a damn Civic.

  • @18echosf

    It sounds as if they copied the exact idea of the new Volvo.......my wife’s 2016 Volvo XC90 has less cylinders, but is turbocharged and supercharged!

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  5 років тому +2

      Not the same as Volvo. The Turbo and Superchargers in Volvos are traditional combustion based. The supercharger in this Mercedes is run by the 48V system and thus can provide power from 0 RPM.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 5 років тому

      Wrong. This uses the 48V system and has no drive belts. It therefore also has no starter motor. The engine just switches on with no starting noise because of the integrated starter generator

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  5 років тому

      As mentioned in the episode, indeed no accessory drive which has nothing to do with starter motors. Respectfully suggest you speak to the same Mercedes engineer I spoke with on the topic . . .

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 5 років тому

      @@MotoManTV There isn't a conventional starter motor. The engine is started immediately because the ISG can turn it on using the 48v system. That's why when you start it makes no starting noise. It just starts idling. I was replying to the other guy and not you by the way. Maybe you need to speak to him again. Otherwise how does it start? It has no belts. The ISG is what starts it up.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  5 років тому

      Agreed - it is indeed the Integrated *Starter* Generator that starts the vehicle as well as powers the 48V system, thus it is misleading to say it does not have a starter - the ISG in this model is rather different but it still serves the same function. A VERY efficient system I cover in the next XX53 episode as this basic concept has another very interesting application but on a MUCH grander scale. Good discussion.: media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/picture/Integrated-Starter-generator-ISG.xhtml?oid=11123461

    Everyone is trying to re invent the wheel A Porsche 911 is A Porsche 911 plain and simple ..
    I have owned 8 Porsche 911's and am currently driving a 2018 Carrera S Cabriolet .. I have tried an Audi S 5 Cabriolet .. biggest piece of crap i ever bought 2 years $ 18756.00 warranty work horrible in the winter /snow .. i had to buy a used Subaru outback for the winter ... I bought my wife an C43 Cabriolet 2019 . returned it the next day horrible car .nothing comes close to a Porsche nothing is one track an AMG Mercedes 43 53 63 .. your going in for major repairs and brakes after they arent made for that .. .. Track a Stock 911 Carerra S .. Thats the difference .. cute car the E53 but not in the same league as a 911 .. Audi S5 and Bmw learnt that already so just let it be .. if you want to buy a performance car buy a 911 ..
