The Mercedes-AMG E53 joins the line-up, available in many different forms; Coupe, Convertible, Saloon and Estate, as well as in the platform shared CLS and AMG GT 4-door. With so much choice and also with the different engines available, is it perhaps a few too many now that wears an AMG badge?!
What ever happened to the black series? Every merc looks really safe style wise these days and you really have to know the AMG line up to recognise these new AMG models what ever happened to the C63 of old ? I miss that crazy super aggressive design language what are you’re thoughts tim ?
This car actually makes a lot of sense. We life in a world where fuel gets more expensive by the minute, and in some country’s (the Netherlands, China, Sweden...) cars with big engines get particular penalty’s whereby the prices between a V8 and a v6 can differ greatly. I know in the Netherlands the price difference between a G63 an G65 is ~€130.000 and a big part (around 70%) of that money is the special emission tax.(something the government makes up) Price difference between a E53 and a E63. (the first price is in the Netherlands, fiscal value. Second price Germany, fiscal value.) E53: €115k(NL) 79K (DE) Price difference: 55K (NL) 31K (DE) E63: €170k(NL) 110K (DE) This proves why in some country’s this kind of car makes sense, and we haven’t even talked about insurance, petrol and road tax. of course we all want to drive the V8/V10 and V12’s but that is just not realistic. Luckily we all got shmee to show us the ‘Supercar dream’😉 Thanks Tim! (Edit: and let’s face it, 435HP is way more than you can use on public roads😜)
Guys, guys, guys. The V6 versions of AMGs are how Audi has A, S then RS, where S is in between A and RS. Same thing with BMW 5 series, M5**i and M5 etc. Its not really a big deal I think.

I owned a 2006 CLS 55 AMG....that car was an absolute BEAST. Was running late for my buddies wedding had it up to 212mph on the hwy and was still pulling! Miss that car.
The E53 Estate is one of the best cars you can buy right now. So many "petrolheads" think compromises in a car are a bad thing. But they're just not. The balance just has to be right. And this drivetrain strikes the perfect balance between being practical, fun, fast, and efficient. Driving a modern 63 AMG with over 600 HP on open roads is rediciulous fun. It's also rediciulously expensive to run and way to uncomfortable to live with every day. I really love these AMG or BMW M "light" models, since they are, in a way, the true successors of the AMGs and BMW Ms and RSs of the naughties. If you ever wanted to own something that's as fun as a E60 M5 without the terrible reliability or fuel economy, and a gearbox you can actually use on public roads, well, now you can. But I guess you could also cry about an AMG that has "only" 430HP. Just hilarious.
good comment you made. In particular that might be acctually the best solution for the problem. Just call them AMG light on the badge. So the true AMG 63 spirit is saved just for the hardcore versions and yet you have distinguished the rather everyday AMGs from normal Mercedes.
I think of all the big boys; Merc, BMW, Audi, Lexus (yes they're in that category too) for me Mercedes are now easily making the best looking cars. What do you guys think?

have you heard of brand dilution? When you have too many AMG models it takes away from the specialness of the AMG moniker... it just becomes a model within the range as opposed to being a special series. It also means AMG doesn't mean as much if any car can be an AMG, it dilutes the philosophy of AMG as well

9:22 the lane assist / steering assist feature, it's not a small thing, it's not insignificant... The amount it reduces your fatigue, especially arm fatigue is just fantastic! I've never heard anyone else comment on it, but it really means you can take 90% of the steering effort out of the driving experience. Cruise control let us rest our legs, cruise distance control took the brain effort our of freeway and city braking ans speed modulation, steering assistance has afforded both, more brain time and restful arms on a long drive, especially on long straight roads, but even on the twisty autobahn. Super effective (to 160kph). I was driving between Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Cologne with the weight of one finger on the steering wheel, 100% predictable (within expectations), 100% confidence. So much extra brain time to observe the traffic and give yourself "space". Genuine stress reduction. Even though the MB driving assistance does drive somewhat like a German.

Yes, you‘re right, I worked at the Mercedes-Benz factory where C Coupe/E Coupe are being produced. All 63/43/53 are just mass production like a standard one, just a few badges are added
But it fits the bill in terms of what it has against the competition. It’s not diluted at all with AMG 45/63/63S/65 being the pinnacle of the model range. The 35/43/53 range makes up a gap that Audi and BMW already have with the M lites and S model range. It rounds off the range rather than diluting it. Proud to have the smaller range with a bigger name!

I agree with you Tim, it's either a full AMG e63s or not at all. It feels to me like they built it for the driver who can't quite afford the e63s but wants an AMG, like having a porsche boxster with a 911 gt3 body kit
It would be super-awesome to see a Mercedes Benz S53e AMG since the in-line straight six is the new craze and the S560e is coming to market pretty soon, a full hybrid AMG version of that unit would be a super-awesome option... The Porsche Turbo S has shown that it is both practical and possible.
It is the top of the line E coupe, so it's called an AMG. It makes sense. On the other hand I see what you mean, there are many AMGs and the brand is getting diluted. Mercedes should've made an E63 for the coupe, but they didn't.
I am happy they made a AMG that is more affordable to the public. That is how it should be. Most people can't afford a AMG63S. Most people can't even afford the AMG53. So every one needs to stop complaining. This is just a cheaper version of a AMG and I am happy Mercedes did it.

The E53 as a car is very well made and certainly lives up to the Mercedes moniker however I certainly do feel that there are too many AMG models in the line up and especially with the arrival of the 53 according to me the 43 should be eliminated or integrated into the normal Mercedes lineup. They modified the Suspension as well as the Engine, they equipped the Car with 4Matic+ which is for AMG cars only and of course the Exterior changes. Of course the car is not a stiff C63/E63 but that's not what Mercedes and AMG intended with this car.
The car's published horsepower rating is 429; whereas the E450 coupe, convertible, sedan & wagon are rated at 362 hp. Absolutely splendid presentation, however!

@@Shmee150 Hopefully you can come to Calgary and go see ZR motors he has an extensive exotic collection including an Enzo he crashed into the ocean during a race and spend 1.5mil or so sending it to Germany to EDO performance and they turned it into a FXX with 900plus horsepower and he took it to the nurenburg ring and was banned cause his exhaust was too loud . Im my personal opinion this 6cylinder engine sounds so good than the biturbo v8 on the other models its so good the biturbo v8s are just boring nowadays without any refinements this 6 cyliners are symphony in the ears!
The engine itself is awesome from a specs and tech view. Mercedes quality is also just amazing but i dont like that its called and amg. I would have liked it to be called E500 or E530 (and the others 400 or 430) and have the v8´s and v12 in the amg lineup. I also dont like the A class amg. it just kinda feels wrong.
@Shmee150 I think it should be in AMG family for the sake of those who may not be able to buy the top of the model @63s, it is good to have different options/choices wearing that badge and kits but still maintain the performance spirit in the 63s. NICE VIDEO YOU HAVE THERE. KEEP IT UP... :)
In my opinion they only make it an AMG so they can ask more money. Personaly would much more prefer it to be the 400 V6 and 500 V8 instead of 43 and 53, so that the AMG models stay a premium product, one day maybe we see the 13, 23 and 33 Models.

This is still a very nice car. Perhaps not aggressive enough to wear the AMG badge. I would buy this car it seems to have a good performance and luxury blend. I bet these sell for around the 60 plus thousand mark.
The question is if AMG should be a genuine sports sub-brand of Mercedes or just a badge for the (almost) full range of Mercedes models.Regarding the motor: best bodystyle is the estate IMHO.

the issue is not the engine, its the amg badge. That car isnt a real AMG. Same thing with the BMW M235i. Not a real M, shouldnt have the badge

Finally the E-Coupe is actually an E-class. The previous generation of E-koop was based on a C-class chassis.

Bailey Smith - Yes and no. The "NO" bit being that the AMG GT4 has the same performance as the E63's but the AMG costs £50,000 more than the E63's.

The E53 Coupe is one of the most beautiful cars in the AMG lineup. But i do agree that all AMG’s should be at 63 level.

@@quentinr1 If you have said your car was the rare 2016 E550 with the "expensive facelift plus the new 9 speed gearbox" combo that could be true.
I'm speaking of power that E53 can't hang. And a look is personal preference. 9 gears I thought 7 was excessive. The 12 to 16E550 should have been The E53

@@Shmee150 Hopefully you can come to Calgary and go see ZR motors he has an extensive exotic collection including an Enzo he crashed into the ocean during a race and spend 1.5mil or so sending it to Germany to EDO performance and they turned it into a FXX with 900plus horsepower and he took it to the nurenburg ring and was banned cause his exhaust was too loud . Im my personal opinion this 6cylinder engine sounds so good than the biturbo v8 on the other models its so good the biturbo v8s are just boring nowadays without any refinements this 6 cyliners are symphony in the ears!

Probably a better car for daily driving than the C 63 or 63 S, I'm sure it uses a lot less gas and AWD means you can still zip around on rainy days.

The engine itself is awesome from a specs and tech view. Mercedes quality is also just amazing but i dont like that its called and amg. I would have liked it to be called E500 or E530 (and the others 400 or 430) and have the v8´s and v12 in the amg lineup. I also dont like the A class amg. it just kinda feels wrong.
@Shmee150 I think it should be in AMG family for the sake of those who may not be able to buy the top of the model @63s, it is good to have different options/choices wearing that badge and kits but still maintain the performance spirit in the 63s. NICE VIDEO YOU HAVE THERE. KEEP IT UP... :)

In my opinion they only make it an AMG so they can ask more money. Personaly would much more prefer it to be the 400 V6 and 500 V8 instead of 43 and 53, so that the AMG models stay a premium product, one day maybe we see the 13, 23 and 33 Models.

Only 357bhp on this E53?? Over in England, the E450 which sits just below the E53 has 362bhp and the E53 has 429bhp??

The weird thing about this new AMG lineup is that their straight-six makes the same sound of the E46 M3
This is still a very nice car. Perhaps not aggressive enough to wear the AMG badge. I would buy this car it seems to have a good performance and luxury blend. I bet these sell for around the 60 plus thousand mark.
