      I always felt a little sorry for Sir Richard when she says that, especially when you see the look on his face at that moment. Iain Glen played it so well, because that quick little comment was no less than adding salt to the wound. I think she would have found a more diplomatic, less caustic way of saying he would not be missed I think sometimes Julian Fellowes overdid it with giving Maggie Smith cute/funny lines. If that were a real-life situation, someone saying that would be very hurtful and I don't think the Dowager would have been that flippant.

      @@BlissfulDee her personality was always “old woman who says what she thinks” She didn’t care for Richard Carlyle and stated many times that he was an unsavory and uncouth sort that she didn’t want Mary to have anything to do with. He didn’t have any notable status in society other than “rich guy” and he wasn’t respected in any of the social circles the Dowager cared about. After it was clear that everyone else in the family had grown to dislike him too, she would have had no need to pretend to be polite to him.

      Though I agree with your comment, I think there was also a moment of shock. To that point, William had always been such a nice guy, not even defending himself against Thomas bullying him. The staff, as well as the show viewers, were not expecting him to suddenly burst out of anger like that. After a few seconds, they all realized William was not going to give up and acted on separating them.

      In the case of Marigold’s parentage, Mary fired the first shot.

    • @yvonnetomenga5726
      @yvonnetomenga5726 5 місяців тому +1

      @davidthaler7018 • I don't agree. I don't think it's a case of Mary seeking revenge. Remember that Mary was honest about the Pamuk episode with Matthew.
      When Mary says to Edith now, "I wasn't to know you hadn't told him," I think that's because Mary thought Edith wouldn't risk her future happiness by hiding something as scandalous as Marigold from Bertie. To me, this scene is very ironic because Edith is accusing Mary of the flaws Edith has displayed throughout the series.
      Remember that Edith didn't just out Mary, Edith came on to the farmer she was driving the tractor for during the war, even though she knew he was married.
      Edith then went on to have an affair with Gregson, another married man. She compounded that scandal by bearing his child and fostering Marigold with the tenant farmer, who had been on the estate for hundreds of years. Then, when Edith wanted, she took Marigold away from them, forcing them to leave the farm.
      Edith seemed to never have been held accountable for any of her conniving or meanness until she was finally caught out by Bertie. If life was fair, she would have lost him for good.

    At 2:53. How was Thomas not fired on the spot by Carson right here? Carson even had to physically restrain him, which no boss should ever do with an employee. Thomas instigated this fight by being so nasty about Cora's miscarriage. Then he horrifically insulted, and then enraged, William by viciously besmirching the death of his mother. In any normal workplace with a normal boss, Thomas would've been out of a job lickety-split. Can someone explain to me/remind me how Thomas got away with this? I don't recall many details from the first season. But this doesn't seem right...

      They were chronically low staffed at many points. As it was said in the first episode, in their house in the past the valets were expected to also be additional footmen for large parties and dinners with prominent guests. Since the valet was always Bates who couldn’t carry a tray AND steady himself with a cane at the same time, we never saw that in practice. The times he was not the valet they weren’t holding big parties anyway or there was a war on. There was also a big garden party imminent and there was no way for it to happen without a second footman. They planned to fire thomas for other things right after the party anyway. He just took himself out of the picture by giving his notice at the party after volunteering for the medical core. There were other times when thomas came close to getting himself fired later on, but his scheming (and luck once or twice) gave him a reprieve.

      The Dowager was looking for a new Lady’s Maid and Cora was helping her. O’Brien thought the new maid would be HER replacement so she was pissed. As revenge, she put soap outside Cora’s bathtub so she’d slip and fall; her conscience got the better of her at the last minute, but it was too late-Cora did slip and fall, and having recently become pregnant, she miscarried. Turns out the baby was a boy (though back then, I’m not sure how they would have known so early) and would have easily resolved the issue of an heir for Robert.
