It’s quite sad to me how Robert didn’t manage to truly appreciate what a treasure he had in Tom until after Sybil was gone. I wish Sybil could’ve seen Tom grow on her family. Sadly it seems that it was her death that made her family more willing to accept him.
2 of my absolute fav scenes in the whole series: 1. Tom and Robert at 3:42 2. Tom & Robert cementing their relationship with Matthew as the most faithful liaison, in the final scene of the episode... I wish it lasted only 30 sec longer, it was an absolutely beautiful bonding :)
Here's something to think about, Matthew helped Tom during his grieving when Lady Sybil died. Fast forward a year or two later when Matthew dies and Tom helped Lady Mary as she continued to grieve for Matthew's tragic death. Tom was also compassionate to Lady Edith with the situation between Michael Gregson and Marigold. He even gained the respect of the Dowager Countess.
Matthew is Dan Stevens’ character, correct? I only just found out about the show after he died, and the Beauty and the Beast remake cast got announced. I need to watch this show again!
I’m glad we didn’t have to see the family’s first reactions to the news of Matthew’s death. I’m certain that Tom must’ve grieved him as deeply as a bereaved brother would. Their friendship was special.
@@KopaXTani Yes, the actor Dan Stevens plays Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey. I would highly recommend you Binge watch the entire series, including the two movies.
The looks from Lady Mary to Anna when she makes the joke about Bates leg, just shows how well they know each other, Lady Mary knew instantly that Anna was joking!!
It's not in this clip, but the scene between Tom and Cora when he said he'd like to stay and she was so happy! I always got the impression that Cora and Violet truly liked Tom. It didn't matter that he started out as their chauffeur.
I think so too. I think she loved Sybil and wanted her to be happy. She said she asked Tom to take her to political rallies when she wanted to go. She was the one who truly advocated for Sybil and Tom and was the first to come around.
I like the scene with Bates keeping score, where he talks about the message he relayed to O'Brien from Thomas, and he doesn't understand how it worked.
Several years ago, I met a man from the U.K who was visiting the States, and he told me that he couldn't understand this country's obsession with baseball. I replied that he was in good company, for I didn't understand the English obsession with cricket. I still don't. lol 😉😊
I see myself in all these characters. When I was younger I was a (pretty well-spoken) contrarian much like Tom. Any time I overstate my abilities I am reminded of Molesley and the importance of humility. My sense of duty and a desire to be perfectly put-together despite not coming from wealth remind me of Carson. And then Lord Grantham represents everything I wish I was, the ideals of a gentleman.
What fantastic clips! ❤I love this episode. I won’t even mention how I rarely watch anything else since I found it last Dec 2022 streaming on Peacock! And now I have the DVD’s that came with the bell! 🤣 Is there a support group for this addiction? 😮😂
I've always thought that Julian could have injected a bit of humor into the scene where Matthew was trying to teach Irishman Tom to play. Perhaps, by telling him to imagine the thing he was trying to hit was the King of England's head or something. 😂... And then after that, showing Tom getting rapidly better at it, lol.
Oh if Sybil had lived I have a thought of a way to include humor into it. Imagine this. Sybil gives the Nanny a break, and takes her outside for a walk and watches Matthew teach Tom Cricket. I can see her say something like, “And let Sybbie be deprived of watching her Daddy play a sport he’s never played before?” I see a lot of myself in Sybil, and that is something I would say to my husband in that situation
@@lauraschoenborn3544just a thought … I doubt the baby would have been named “Sybbie” because the name served as a memorial to Sybil. Sorry, just being picky. Lol. I wish Sybil never left the series. But then, who knows if the 3 guys would have gotten so close.
1:18 Ladies and gentlemen our future school teacher, bragging of how well he learned cricket as a kid and using it as a role model of education. 7:07 Oh boy.
Cricket is a game of skill, strategy and patience. It can go on all day. There’s a break for lunch and tea. Only civilised nations can play it. This is why the British introduced cricket around the empire.
It’s odd, but I have just finished watching this episode of Downton on UA-cam…… I saw the original tv series’s(every one) all of the repeat’s, the original movie, and now waiting for Downton(a new ara) to come out on DVD.
Just sitting here, disappointed that Peter Davison wasn't nabbed for a guest role in this episode. All crickety-cricket, complete with a little stalk of celery...
Its like baseball but baseball came out of cricket. Rules are a little different but there are a bunch of players, bat and ball, hitting and running, scoring runs and getting the batter out. Does that make sense?
I'm American, and I have given this conundrum a great deal of thought. And as near as I can tell, there are a LOT of invisible little crickets on the ground. You can't hear them in the daytime because they're very quiet. But they are there under the field. Then you play this predecessor to American baseball. And you run around, and inadvertently stomp every one of these helpless crickets into the ground. 😂 I'm still working on the etymology of rugby. I haven't seen any rugs out doors, so I'm stuck, lol.
I also loved how Robert came to admire, depend, and even love Tom as a member of the family.
It’s quite sad to me how Robert didn’t manage to truly appreciate what a treasure he had in Tom until after Sybil was gone. I wish Sybil could’ve seen Tom grow on her family. Sadly it seems that it was her death that made her family more willing to accept him.
@@12classics39 I think Sybil would have loved it as well. She would get to tell Robert, "I told you so," at some point.
I absolutely loved the friendship between Matthew and Tom.
I wish Matthew not died too early in season 3😢
My headcanon is that when Tom remarried, he had a son whom he named after Matthew. :)
@@12classics39 I love that!
Me too
I just wish we saw more of it.
7:40 Sybil would be so proud! Her husband, her father, and her brother (in-law) together.

I wish it had lasted 3 seasons/series and 2 movies longer rather than to deal with Mary's 2nd husband who eventually became mentioned but not seen.

That conversation about making Tom join thhe cricket team and Carson's reaction gave me one of the biggest laughs from this show.
1:02 Anna's such a savage. I love the relationship she has with Lady Mary. 😊
Mosely was hilarious with his bragging!!😅
...firm but tender 🏏
So LOVE all of the Downton Abbey Characters... even the ones that are not so nice... they all were/are portrayed wonderfully!

Love the explanation Tom gave how each person's forte fits into delegating what's needed for DA to be viable. It's how you get things done.
The friendship between Tom & Matthew
7:18 Dr Clarkson looks so handsome in that shot
Isobel chose the wrong man for sure
Tom, Matthew and Robert is such a good team together🥰

I love Tom and Matthew crawley brother relationship
Mr Molesley giving instructions but then eekkk 😂
Upload the fight Mary and Tom had after Mary ruined Edith's relationship with Bertie! That scene is so powerful!

most aren't obsessed with cricket

Thanks for sharing the story. I would have said the exact same thing. 😀
Robert: Are you crying?! There's no crying in Cricket!

@Downton Abbey • I really enjoyed the editing on this clip. It did tell the story of the match.
Molesley needs to do an instructional video for cricket.
You mean the actor? That would be hilarious I'm sure. 😂
This is my favorite episode seeing the three of them together but it also saddens me since the next season we lose Mathew🥺
Actually this all occurred in season 3. Matthew's tragic death happens in the final episode of season 3. 💔
I’ve been to 3 or 4 cricket matches, and I still have no idea what the hell they’re doing out there. 😂😂
I gave it a try way back when ESPN aired a game back in '90. Thank you God all mighty for baseball.
