She didn’t want to be only known for that role, as she had a desire to do a variety of different projects. So that meant leaving the show early on. Which is a smart thing to do when your a new actor & have a strong character your playing to boot.

@@Michiganian8I do believe it’s smart in some situations, but I think with this particular character, Sybil, with soo much growth potential, she made a mistake. Look at Lily James. If Jessica Brown-Findlay would’ve stayed, I believe she would’ve made Sybil iconic. I recently read an interview with her, I think it was an English local magazine, and the headline was Lady Sybil where you’ve been? So even after she left early to avoid that, she’s still remembered for that, why? Because she hasn’t done anything exactly different or bigger, and I believe if she would’ve stayed, she could have become a bigger star, hence having more opportunities on the long run.

Sybil is who Maud Bagshaw would like to have been, had she been brave enough to flout tradition and her position. Sybil gave up everything to be with the man she loved and her values, such was her strength of character. Maud Bagshaw couldn't do that and never married her lover, keeping him and their daughter secret. (I know times changed in those decades, but I suspect Maud saw similarities in herself and Sybil's choices.)

Unfortunately season 3 was tragic because what were essentially the two best characters and maybe two of the best actors. Died left the show. Matthew and Sybil are basically stallworth characters on the show that both produced drama, stability, excitement, liberality in the face of conservatism they were brilliant and I'm not sure that the show ever kept up after season 3 with what these characters were able to do it was still a great show but not what it was when Sybil and Matthew were in the show

One thing I've noticed from DA and other period dramas that's different now is that women took time to think about a proposal before saying yes or no. I don't know why that stopped but it seems awfully sensible. Now you're expected to say yes in the heat of the moment, which is something I did, then I deeply regretted getting married. I have no doubt this contributes to such a high divorce rate.

And it's not just him, a lot of men try to push for you to just move in and get married right away. It's exhausting repeatedly saying no I'm not ready to be married yet.

There was so much I loved about this series. My only quarrel was with the decisions to kill off the characters of two actors who had elected to leave the show. They could've easily been written out in other ways. One death perhaps, but twice? Almost as if the producers wanted to make sure the actors were never allowed back.

I always found it incredibly selfish of Sybil over the fact that she tricked Branson into taking her to the election. Gwen said in the same episode that for Sybil things she wishes for come true because she is raised to have it all within her grasp. She literally almost risked Branson’s lively hood for her own personal gain and at the same time wanted to cry about how progressive she was, yet she was selfish enough to use her servants to get her way.

@@thetillerwiller4696 Anyone who's been raised in a privileged home WILL be selfish to some degree. It's only natural because of how they were raised. Look at anyone in today's world who has everything handed to them. All it took was some reality to set in for that to change. Just because she was behaving true to form of anyone born with that level of birthright doesn't mean she intentionally did it to cause any level of harm or anything. She just was never outright raised to think of others because of how she lived. It may be selfish but only by circumstance only. In real life, her family would've disowned her and she would've grown to regret her decision. She has no concept of what it is to live with unending instability and hardship. She has no concept of what it would mean to raise her children in a harsh world and the disservice and regret that would come in knowing she could have given her children a better life. She has no concept of what it is to grow older and look back at young love and something you once felt such conviction for and know it was only because you'd never experienced anything else. As you age you realize falling in love is a passing state and it's not difficult to find with multiple people throughout life. She would've realized had she waited she'd just as easily fallen for someone who could've given her a nice life. If she waited she might have lived.
