@@catcauldron217 I've always thought Mary's parting words to be a bit of a curse. He could easily do another series in the middle, to cover many of the stories that weren't told at all, or told completely. There are lots and lots of them.
      Specifically, involving Matthew and/or Sybil.
A Downton Abbey: Matthew and Sybil miniseries, that digitally de-aged the actors a few years, and used camera shots and angles that were never used in the main series, could be spliced in. Which would also put Violet back in, in unused footage.
They did, and still do this very successfully with The Karate Kid movies, and the modern Cobra Kai series. Wherein, they use unused footage and unused camera angles that have never been seen before, from The Karate Kid movie from the 80s.
Can you just imagine all the massive amounts of unused footage involving everyone that could be useful in a Matthew and Sybil series, that went back and told all the untold stories about these two very popular, prematurely killed off characters.

Something I love about the progression of the show is how it displays the atmosphere shifting with the years passing.
In the beginning it felt very serious and stiff with the clothing and mannerisms being, well, very 1800’s. And now it’s so light and the atmosphere feels very modern, like any of us could step in and feel right at home.
One scene from the final episode of the last season stuck with me, when Mary actually sat down on a bridge next to Tony in her light informal clothing outdoors. Even something like that would not have happened in the first few seasons which gives you an idea of how restricted everyone used to be in their mannerisms and how far they have moved into modern informal life.
To me as a viewer this actually felt refreshing, like they were somehow free or relaxed if that makes sense.

Mary often is painted as a snob though I would argue the actual snob of the sisters was Edith. Thomas giving his resignation and Mary understanding is such a good conclusion to their relationship. Mary was always kind and accepting towards him. She enouraged his friendship with George, even bringing George to visit after the suicide attempt to cheer up Thomas. She knew his "skills" well enough to sic Thomas on Lord Sinderby and his butler (some of my favorite scenes). He willingly assisted which shows some loyalty to Mary, which we all know trust and loyalty are difficult for Thomas. I don't remember there ever being conflict between the 2 of them.

I saw the series when it had finished but I saw it all and I liked it. And with these movies I think they have destroyed the essence of the series, especially with this last one. They are entertaining but they resemble a lot of sitcom comedies more than a serious series

There’s no conflict. And the wonderful kindness of the upper class to the workers makes me vomit. It’s all just a bit of fan service at this point.

Actually 'ms' is used with both married and unmarried women, also, it's explained in Downton Abbey that head housekeepers and ladies maids are always 'mrs' regardless of marital status.

So how much would 700 guineas be in today's money?

    • @ilikemandalorians9861
      @ilikemandalorians9861 6 місяців тому +1

According to the information that I found, 1 guinea is equal to £1.05. Using the Bank of England’s inflation calculator, £700 in 1925 would be equal to some £35.000 in 2023 (approximately).

In this case I can understand it, it was a costume for a different extra, and badly fitting corsets are absolute hell. Besides even then some people hated corsets in that time too.
I mean, I love mine, and I wear mine every day. But I know quite some people, especially auties who hate them for being constricting because they hate all tight clothes. Mind you, there's also a large number of auties who love corsets like me.
Mrs Patmore has always been discribed as disliking corsets. And even nowadays there are a slew of women and men who hate their "normal" and socially required clothing.
