Knitting Help - Binding Off in the Middle of a Row

  • There are several reasons that a pattern will have you binding-off stitches in the middle of a row - the necklines of sweaters, for example. In this video I show you how to do that, while keeping the correct stitch count.
    The basketweave stitch in my sample is the stitch I use in my Mimi Hooded Scarf pattern:
    • Mimi Hooded Scarf
    The needles I use are Knitter's Pride Bamboo DPNs.
    The yarn I use in the video is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.
    The nail polish I'm wearing is by Julep, color "Amanda".

    My silver ring is actually a knitting needle gauge, and can be found here:

    Thanks, Staci. Your videos prove that the ins and outs of all kinds of needlework need to be taught visually, not just text and drawings.

    Just what I was looking for! I've always gotten a bit confused when binding off and knitting in the same row. It makes so much sense now when you said you have to knit 2 at the beginning to bind of just one stitch. You did a wonderful job of showing and explaining something that seems like it should be so simple, but yet a bit confusing at the same time. Thanks so much!

    I used to make this mistake all the time, where I would only knit the first stitch then start binding off, my count would always end up wrong and I'd get so frustrated! Can't recall where I learnt that I needed to knit two but the marker idea is great to help with the start point! Great video!!

    Hurray!!! My mystery is solved, thank you Staci! :D
    I'd been struggling with a small Christmas stocking in which immediately after casting on, you bind off 10 stitches to create the loop/hanger. I was driving myself nuts because I was always coming up with the wrong count *after* knitting the first round of ribbing. "Helloooo, *think* McFly!", after binding off the correct amount of stitches, I was forgetting to transfer the last loop from the right needle to the left needle! Problem solved. Thanks again! :)

    What a great video to explain what otherwise could be very confusing. I love the markers if for no other reason but to clearly visualize what actually is happening. Thank you Staci

    Thank you so much for this video. I had to do a middle of the row bind off on a baby hat pattern last year. After several tries it got tossed across the room chopped up and tossed. Yup I was beyond frustrated. So here you are with this video so I'll try it again. I'll start it with a positive attitude. 😉

    thank you so much this actually helps with bag designs too since some use bind off then cast on the next row to make handles instead of trying to sew straps on latter.

    Generally, yours are the only videos on knitting I ever need or want - always clear and well done! But what I desperately need is a video on the alternating, sloped bind off, of the two shoulder sides of the garment; I have found NOTHING out there that can explain this comprehensively (in the pattern I am using I am also having to continue a cable pattern with rows of different cables! I am close to losing my mind : ) Help!

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 місяці тому

      Sorry you're having trouble...I have a video on the sloped BO, but your situation sounds specific to your pattern. I'm sorry it isn't spelled out clearly in the pattern itself, you may want to contact the pattern designer for clarification. Good designers get back to you quickly with answers to your questions. :)

    would you attach a new yarn on the right side to continue knitting on both sides? hoping I'm not the only one wondering. thanks in advance

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 років тому +3

      +Diana Baires - if you're following a pattern that has you bind-off in the middle of a row, the pattern should be specific about reattaching the yarn...but the basic answer is yes. You'll finish the knitting on one side of the bind-off (where your working yarn is attached), then reattach the yarn on the other side to complete that side. The pattern should be specific about whether you're attaching to the right-side or the wrong-side to complete the second half, because that will make a difference, especially if there is shaping involved.

    The explanation why to bind off in the middle was exactly why I needed this, my pattern reads right and left sides , row 25-27k then 28 bind off, then do middle section 10 more rows, It is baby booties. I’ve never seen a pattern like this so not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

    Do you have a video that takes up where you left off here? I am knitting my first cardigan sweater and am almost to the point on the back where i will need to start knitting the shoulders and binding off the back neckline. I'm not sure how to do that. This video was very helpful but I'm wondering how you get from that left shoulder and back to the right shoulder? I've tried to find a video explaining this but haven't had a lot of success there. Your videos are wonderful and so clear, especially for brand new knitters. Thank you for offering all these tips. They're so helpful!

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 років тому +1

      After you BO the back neckline and knit one side of the shoulder, you have to reattach the yarn to the other side to knit the other shoulder. As you've noticed, there is no working yarn attached to the second shoulder, so you just pick up the yarn and start working with it to finish the other side.

    Hi from Australia, I often come here for tips! Just a question - if a pattern reads, say, 'K23, co 2, K25, co2', - I understand that I have to knit two stitches before I start binding off, and that the second bind off stitch will go over the first stitch of the K25.....but when I am counting, do I then start counting AGAIN (essentially knitting twenty SIX stitches) or is that first stitch of the next worked group that the second bind off stitch goes over actually the first stitch of the 25, and I only need to count 24 more? Because I will have 'bound off two', but I THINK in doing that I have already knitted the first of the 25, is this correct and am I making sense. This is more of a 'how to read a pattern' question I think. Thanks in advance!

    If I am binding off in pattern, and the pattern calls for a yarn over - do I eliminate and ignore the yo, (and count that stitch as bound off?)

    Hi Staci, Just wondering if you can help. I need to decrease (bind off) 2 stitches at the end of a moss stitch row. Can you help me with this please. Thanks Kim

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 років тому

      If you need to bind-off and it is not the end of your project (like you have more rows to knit), bind-off the two stitches at the *beginning* of the next row (not the end of a row) so that your working yarn is in the right position to keep knitting. If this is confusing, I suggest contacting the pattern designer directly - what I've given you is general advice, but the designer for the pattern you're following will be able to help you with specific advice on his/her design.

    What do you do on the next row following the center bind off?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 років тому +1

      +Dolores Ungerleider - the pattern you're following should give specific instructions, but generally, when you're binding off for a neck opening, the two sides of the shoulder are then worked separately.

    My pattern says bind off two stitches on each side. What the hell does that mean ? 😬

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 років тому

      When I read that, it means to bind off two stitches at each edge. But if you are unsure, you'll need to contact the pattern designer directly for clarity - Ravelry message is usually a good way to reach designers.
