Why would you even promote this ring cam if you are saying the cam doesn't work, after 30 or 60 minutes, when the car is turned off??? And why would you wait until the END of the video to tell us that? I was under the impression that the cam would activate from motion detection when the car is parked and turned OFF, despite battery setting from the app?
This guy asked my exact question, and you didn’t answer ?.. I’m also under the impression that this will detect motion all day and I will know if anyone is messing with the car, what’s the point if it is off line in 60 minutes?
John H., I spoke with Ring Cam directly and they claim that the camera does indeed begin recording after motion activation. However, the camera must be plugged into port and getting battery juice in order to be active, as stated in video. Even after the conversation with Ring Cam customer service, I still have speculations about this camera though. I would like to get more of a technical explanation from Tech with Brett, clarifying what he meant at the end of the video?
For 250$. What I really want to know is the video quality, can it pick up license plates ? That’s one of the most important things in my opinion and also where dash came fail the most.
For $250 you can get a Viofo A139 Pro and have a tested, trusted and widely recommended dash cam that is the industry leader in quality and able to pick up a lot of plates while in motion. Go with what's proven instead of paying to be a beta tester of an inferior product.
No, but I have a dedicated dashcam so not THAT import in my case. Supposed the ring cam could serve as a "back up" if for some reason my dashcam goes down.
Thank you for making this video. I really like the options of keeping track of what's going on in your car remotely. I'm personally not a fan of Alexa so I wish Google would come out with something similar.
You have to pay extra for that. I would not hook anything from any company thats been selling people's data to my OBD reader. Like the guy that rented a car for a week and got an $8 thousand dollar bill as the car rental company fined him every single time he broke the speed limit. If your car is in your drive or access to Wifi, just buy the Wyze cam and stick a sd cars it in. Someone breaks in and the wifi sends you a notification and records everything without sending your data to your insurance company. The insurance compainies offered these spy cams for free, but no one wanted one, so now you have to pay and people line up?
@@annalee5751 I hear what you're saying. I didn't think about the extra information that can be used from the OBD port and like the thought of using a Wyze camera. Thank you!
Im a truck driver and have to leave my personal vehicle at the yard. i got this as what i thought was going to be an upgrade from my garmin Mini 2 but does the exact same thing, and it's cheaper than the ring. 1st problem, it won't notify me when there is motion OUTSIDE. 2nd problem it won't record outside movement only the inside, and that only happens when i go into my car. And 3rd this thing should come with a memory card. I like the fact i can check up on my truck from out of state but what's the point if i don't get notified when a bum looks into my window or approaches my car to jack my antenna. Ring has to go back to the drawing board with this one asap, which has lots of potential, but they decided to release it too soon just to go play outside. So for now its Garbage.
Got mine yesterday and watched this before my install. You might want to have your car battery checked mine stayed on and would record motion for a full 12hrs parked at work in default setting.
Nice dashcam and great review. Two gripes though. Ring needs an alternate power source (my OBDII port is already in use). I would prefer a rear view mirror mount, rather than on the dash. It could serve as a front AND rear camera if it had the height of the rear view mirror.
So I unclipped my OBD from it's mounting bracket so that I could have enough room to replace the OBD port cover, it was killing me with it being off. The OBD wiring seems rigid and bulky enough to stop it from flopping around but I'll see if I need to improvise some more.
One thing I dont like about this is the fact that it is plugged in into your obd2 connector. First thing that comes to mind is, will this be tracking your vehicle speed? Any other dash cam uses the light swith plug.
I thought it would stay in some type of low power mode unless it detects motion. An external battery is a great idea, maybe you can have a few easily interchangeable ones so it never dies on you.
I have one on order. Seems pretty good but one of the main reasons I ordered it was because I can monitor the car when I’m not with it. This may be a deal breaker for me

You can get something that’s magnetic and put it on your windshield and when you’re using it you could put it up and when you’re not using it you can take it down so that it won’t get really hot
One of the main selling points is to use this as a security camera when you're away from your vehicle. Removing it would effectively defeat that purpose.
Excellent comprehensive review, thank you! One question though. If your traffic stop is longer than 15 minutes, can you just say "Alexa Record" to continue recording? I would imagine you'd have to turn the key on to do that but starting the car could PO the copper. LOL

Just received my Ring Car Cam. Went to install it and found out that it’s too big and impedes the driver’s vision. The blue light on the camera facing the driver is really bright and distracting. There should be alternate ways to install it such as from the top of the windshield. Returning this dash cam today.
I disagree, the camera is way smaller than expected and doesn't block anything. The light is also smaller than shown in pictures it's just a tiny dot that is barely visible.
This looks like Ring can do what I need, which is to know what is happening while the car is parked and I have walked away. I need to see who gets close to the car since my car has been vandalized several times, or someone has scratched or deinflated the tires.

I’m having the same issues with the camera turning off quickly after the car has stopped. It’s stopped 39 minutes after the car stopped. My OwlCam in my other vehicle works for three days & then stops. Thanks.
Instead of using ring connect go. Can I use my phone internet to have internet signal on the cam. Basically tethering. I have 40gb 5g internet tethering every month on my phone plan
I'm confused. I watched the whole video and towards the end you said, it only stays on a few minutes & it cuts off and you are no longer protected/ meaning its not recording anymore, but when you leave the vehicle, doesn't it start recording when it's in motion detection mode?
Is this matter/thread enabled? I missed it if you discussed. I don't want to add a subscription but am wondering if we may backdoor into iCloud HSV support over the next few months/years. I would consider replacing my Viofos with this if I could have a cloud storage option.
Very unclear as to how 1080p is mentioned "up to 1080p Infrared Lights for Night Vision". But otherwise 540p? Also, I use front and rear cams on all my vehicles. This needs to be addressed for people that want full coverage.
I’ve been very curious since this device was announced. I’ve been trying to figure out what happens in a accident. Basically, in legal situations, you need to have an entire video, not 20 seconds clips. Is video recording all the time while driving or does it record sometimes?
Yes the video is recording all the time when driving and you can view the full video on the app. It only lets you download 20 seconds but you could screen record a long part of the video of you need to.
Won't work as the ODB2 is a requirement, guess it checks to make sure it's plug in to ODB before you can complete the install process. This is why you have to check to make sure your car is compatible.
1. My understanding is the USB C port is not standard and a regular usb charger will not work. 2. It likely uses the ODB port to know when the engine is on and to start recordings.
Is the protect go subscription completely different than their ring protect? Or will I be covered if I already have the pro protection for my home ring alarm system.
Yes you could. The sad part is you can only have it connect to one Wifi SSID, so just make your phone the same as your home network and that should work.
Why is it says my truck battery needs attention when im not driving? And now the only time I can see anything on my camera is when I'm in the truck because of this?
This because the camera is turned off because it has depleted what it can use from the car battery without completely draining the car battery. Most likely your batter is healthy but you could get it tested to see if it does have any issues.
Yes, it will record events until until the camera has used enough of the car battery and then turns off to keep the battery safe. In some cars it might only be an hour or could be a day.
Memphis auto breakins and car jacking are at 2400 for 2 months, a car stolen every 30 minutes. Something like that sticking up will increase breakins. In memphis they don't care if they're on a video.

So the camera should be free and just pay the monthly charge ⁉️ If you do not subscribe, it's not worth having ‼️ Just one more fee to pay ‼️ Deal killer for me ‼️🤔
If this wasn’t a cash grab, you could connect to my phone during a traffic stop and use that 4g and 5g. Will it at least record the traffic stop locally?
For whatever reason this is not supported. I tried using different power supplies as well as a portable battery pack with USB C and not of them would power it on.
Compared to the other dash cam I recorded the field of view isn't quite as big but I feel like it still looked really good. It would be nice to have a little more sharpness to see license plates but that is hard to do with distance and a 1080p camera.
Good concept for a - Cam but in no way I'm letting an app that I have to pay for monthly monitor my vehicle's internals on the computer as well via ODB2 no thanks
It does lose a lot of functionality for me because of my vehicles limitations. Some others have had it last for 12 hours which would certainly make it a much better monitoring system.

Is this matter/thread enabled? I missed it if you discussed. I don't want to add a subscription but am wondering if we may backdoor into iCloud HSV support over the next few months/years. I would consider replacing my Viofos with this if I could have a cloud storage option.
I felt this review is more of an app review than dash cam, no spec no video resolution test etc 😂
Is it possible to connect a 360 degree view?
How is it with recording the back end when vehicles behind you
It would seem the placement is also the hottest spot in the Summer months. How does this stand up to heat?
That is a good question. It is still freezing outside so that will be hard to test for awhile.
@@TechWithBrett what a trash system
They changed this with other dash cams .. black Vue is the same and you can't download the video ..
Great Job
Can you just use a 12v to type c adapter? Or OBD2 is strictly needed
I we would like to know that to
Won't work as the ODB2 is a requirement, guess it checks to make sure it's plug in to ODB before you can complete the install process. This is why you have to check to make sure your car is compatible.
1. My understanding is the USB C port is not standard and a regular usb charger will not work. 2. It likely uses the ODB port to know when the engine is on and to start recordings.
Is the protect go subscription completely different than their ring protect? Or will I be covered if I already have the pro protection for my home ring alarm system.
it is separate. $6.00 a month or $60 a year Ring Protect Go
How does this work or not work with Amazon auto
is it compatible with 2013 Honda Civic
What lights are you doing for your studio backdrop? Looks amazing!
Thanks! They are actually these Novostella lights on a large piece of photography paper. ua-cam.com/video/hUynVzPODwM/v-deo.html
@@TechWithBrett Thanks Brett! I really appreciate your answer. I went ahead and ordered 4 using your link. they were on good sale.
Power needs to be on left hand side not the right
Does anyone have this? Is this a good investment for a driver wanting to use dash cams?
My Alexa record voice functio. DOesnt work, what am i doingwrong?
How much does it cost nothing service at the actual ring cam itself
Does the local storage video gets uploaded to the cloud eventually or does it stay on the cam until it’s deleted?
Only the short Cloud Highlights get uploaded. The others stay on the Local Storage until it fills all the way up and deleted.
I guess you could also use the LTE of your phone by using that as a wifi-access-point (tethering)
Yes you could. The sad part is you can only have it connect to one Wifi SSID, so just make your phone the same as your home network and that should work.
@@TechWithBrett nice !
That doesn't look like it would stay in place. How does it not just bounce around when hitting a bump..
Is work 24 hrs ?.
With multiple cameras
How was the license plate readability at night and during the day?
Sadly I haven’t been able to make out any plate during the day, and most definitely not at night.
Why is it says my truck battery needs attention when im not driving? And now the only time I can see anything on my camera is when I'm in the truck because of this?
This because the camera is turned off because it has depleted what it can use from the car battery without completely draining the car battery. Most likely your batter is healthy but you could get it tested to see if it does have any issues.
will the ring cam record when the car engine is off? or in park mode?
Yes, it will record events until until the camera has used enough of the car battery and then turns off to keep the battery safe. In some cars it might only be an hour or could be a day.
Memphis auto breakins and car jacking are at 2400 for 2 months, a car stolen every 30 minutes. Something like that sticking up will increase breakins. In memphis they don't care if they're on a video.
Great Video the only thing I don't like Is have to plunging into my OBD with some cars this is a potential can of worms,
what's the camera you have in front of your mirror ? thanks
This one: ua-cam.com/video/Qhj1NQIhzh0/v-deo.html
First flaw if most of the vehicles have the computer port on the left side why do the put the connection port on the right side? 😒
I may have said something wrong there. If it is on the left side it is compatible. All other areas say it doesn't work.
Wonder if you can hook it up to a external power brick and the brick to your car charger to keep it going all the time ?
I was searching the comments to see if anyone else was thinking this too...
@@RAMSEYBOYD why do we have to figure things out and ring makes the money ?
I tried using an external battery pack and it did not power the camera.
@@TechWithBrett wonder if it’s the software or power ? I’m still confused why it doesn’t stay on all the time for total surveillance why does it shut off in a couple of hours
@@emidiobosco7140 Limited by the cars battery capabilities. If it stayed on longer I can see it causing battery problems or even it could completely drain it. Hopefully they come out with some battery compatibility checker.
can you power that ring car cam using an external power source like the jackery for example?
From my portable power supply I wasn't able to.
@@TechWithBrett thank you for that reply.
So the camera should be free and just pay the monthly charge ⁉️ If you do not subscribe, it's not worth having ‼️
Just one more fee to pay ‼️
Deal killer for me ‼️🤔
If this wasn’t a cash grab, you could connect to my phone during a traffic stop and use that 4g and 5g.
Will it at least record the traffic stop locally?
Can you plug the usb part of the cable into a portable battery bank?
For whatever reason this is not supported. I tried using different power supplies as well as a portable battery pack with USB C and not of them would power it on.
@@TechWithBrett It requires 12 volts. Most USB C battery packs only supply 5 volts
The view out of the front of doesn’t look so great would you still recommend this?
Compared to the other dash cam I recorded the field of view isn't quite as big but I feel like it still looked really good. It would be nice to have a little more sharpness to see license plates but that is hard to do with distance and a 1080p camera.
@@TechWithBrett have you tested any higher resolution cameras?
Good concept for a - Cam but in no way I'm letting an app that I have to pay for monthly monitor my vehicle's internals on the computer as well via ODB2 no thanks
The placement is not good. Your dash lights will always think it's night.
I hate how ring made the mount for this camera. It’s almost a deal breaker for me. Camera doesn’t seem to be to good of quality . Cool idea tho
Can someone please explain what's the point of the battery died 2 hours after parking?
It does lose a lot of functionality for me because of my vehicles limitations. Some others have had it last for 12 hours which would certainly make it a much better monitoring system.
@@TechWithBrett why do others last longer than some? It doesn't make any sense. Perhaps ring remotely monitors is the only explanation
Wait, I thought $6 x 12 is 72 per year. Do they give you a discount?
Thay is true, but when you pay for it yearly they give you a bit of a discount so it is only $60.
Yes, if you pre pay a year
