      I am here too and I think he is a very interesting and a brilliant commentator. Like Malcolm X he knew to absolutely distrust the white liberal as far as he could throw them. The hypocrisy with mr. Baldwin however is that he bemoans European society and culture from where he lived and was educated. Also, he lived a disordered life as a homosexual.

      @@eileen1820 He did not live a "disordered" life. It completely baffles me how you could praise someone for eloquently eviscerating prejudice in all its forms, and then completely undermine everything you've said by making an equally pernitious prejudicial and ignorant comment about his sexuality.
      Your attitude of "I like him, shame that he's gay though" reminds me of racists who would go around saying "I like him, shame he's a negro though." He doesn't have to conform to your notion of how a gay person should love, any more than a black person must conform to a white person's idea of how a black person should act.

      @@jazzthrowout265 Unfortunately, you are just nitpicking at this point. You are well aware of what he meant. I was raised to believe by both my mother and several schoolteachers, that articulate was and is a group-less positive comment on one's oratory ability, and any demeaning racial traits associated with it, long gone. Sorry to burst your bubble, friend, but applying old meanings to new definitions of words, especially used in a modern positive context reflecting on a man, is not wrong, and is needless to point that out as a point against the original poster.

    • @RatBastard701
      @RatBastard701 4 роки тому

      Neill Graham Huelsing I don’t think so. An observation, and especially the pleasantly surprised tone in which Black intellectuals speak is usually offered, reveals that white people subscribes to a way of thinking that holds Black people are typically inarticulate. “Articulate” Blacks are therefore a welcome exception to the rule. This is not “long gone”thinking as you stated. Mayor Bloomberg recently cited that Corey Booker was “well-spoken”.

    • @gabrieljean-batiste2006
      @gabrieljean-batiste2006 4 роки тому +1

      @@neill9778 Even Harry Reid's first comment about Obama was about how "articulate" he was and his ability to speak standard English (but also speak in "Negro dialect" if he so chose). He got flack for that and apologized, noting the history. So, it's not that old of a way for a white person to express surprise at a black person of high intelligence. However, in the case of the original comment, I don't believe the historical racist usage of "articulate" could apply at all since Baldwin is participating in a debate. How well someone articulates a viewpoint is crucial in such a setting. So, praising someone for that quality is only natural. Context is important.

Last time i checked, slavery didnt begin in the USA. In fact, slavery was very small in the USA compared to places like the Caribbean or Brazil. Still waiting for the first ADOS President....and no Bill (according to Toni Morrison) and BO were not, so still waiting. Hope there is a Baldwin renaissance, and he is given his due. He is one of the greatest American writers, incomparable. If you can please watch 'James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket'.

    Robert Kennedy's prediction was close, very close, to what actually unfolded.
    I haven't seen his original quote so I can't say for sure, but I suspect that Baldwin may be misinterpreting here. The projection that America might elect a Black president by the end of the 20th century may not have been about what blacks might be able to achieve in that time, but what whites might be able to.
    I'm sure RFK recognized that there were plenty of of African Americans who were intelligent and well enough educated to take national leadership roles in his own day, so it seems to me he was commenting on how long it would take white America to recognize and reward the talent already in their midst.

I will go back and try to locate and post link here for you to catch the most of it. I say that because two other portions of his debate statement we're censored as well. But someone accurately transcribe this and possibly the other two in the comment section of that video.

    The dialogue will elevate when people make a choice to set their chosen assumptions and pre-conceived notions aside, along with the filter of blame and shame. Know the self and you have half the steps toward a solution. We all have inherited a world created and ruled by men who share long history or rape, pillage and plundering. We have all the information needed to know what not to do. Focus on what works and apply that to action going forward. When we learn better, we have no excuse for not doing better.
