I was four years old in 1968 so I don’t have but a memory of the atmosphere in New Orleans until 1975. Watergate, Vietnam and what at the time, I maybe would have said riots. I am a white person, we lived right on the edge of the black neighborhood, my street was Lowerline. I remember a black man with maybe his wife ran out of gas in our neighborhood. I was just maybe 6 so likely 1972. I thought he was scared, I asked if he had run out of gas. I told him we have a can of gas. My Mom helped to get the gas emptied into his tank. I visited my Dad in New Orleans in ‘84, my Mom had left him in ‘75. He was originally from Mobile, Ala. We had a discussion about that time and Martin Luther King. My Dad said, “Why was he in such a rush?” The rush was the need to have equal rights for black people. I just said, “How long did he have to wait?” Strange thing, my Dad was a very nice person, but he absorbed racism from his up bringing. Same today, humans just aren’t as rational as we like to think. I really like New Orleans but I’m glad I left. I wouldn’t want to be like that. We also went to a catholic school, I’m glad I’m not in that. I remember hearing or seeing Baldwin in media over the years. It’s got to be frustrating to be that smart around so much institutional stupidity.
James Baldwin was a brilliant voice speaking unvarnished truths at a time when more people needed to hear what he was saying. It was a moment where everything could have shifted…and yet, there was too much resistance to alter a broken social order. Thank you for letting him be heard today, when so many of his truths are still with us.🖤🇨🇦

Sometimes I find myself wishing you had interviewed a few of our indigenous back when you started...those ancient voices are gone now but the song goes on and on... The country is torn almost in half these days with the black lives matter and such...but we sit here in silence until the rivers need cleaning then hear us roar....all for nothing tho...because our voices about the land and rivers and oceans being important not just to us but to everyone...are drowned out by other issues.😞

He's right to call out the apathy of white citizens. Too many act like it's not their problem. But it IS our problem! Our complacency only furthers the mistreatment that others receive. We sure wouldn't like it if it were happening to us, so how can we ignore the plight of our fellow countrymen? Or make ridiculous excuses that we know are nothing more than frivolous platitudes?

Sadly I am seeing a repeat today. We seem to be split. Would have thought racism and bigotry would have ended by now. I was protesting the war then, but non violently. God only sees us as the Human Race
When I was a child, not that long ago, the idea that a Black person would be anything of consequence, hold any position of consequence, was ridiculous and quite angering to most people. You never saw a black mailman. You never saw a Black cop. The school I went to had not one Black child in it. And the idea that any of that was possible within the next 100,000 years stood about the same probability that the sun would blow up in the next 10 minutes. The United States has come a long way, regardless of those who say it has not.
Don't disparage the opinions of those who still call it out. The US _still_ needs to do a hell of a lot better, and it is outrageous that it hasn't. Though that is mainly due to the absolutely disgraceful people who run the country.

Bombings, political and clerical assassinations, war protests, race integration had been mandatory. Well there is a case to blame despite the fact that those on the right simply want to wave it away. To this day if you are black you will more likely be in abject poverty, more likely to live in a food desert, more likely to be on minimum wage or less, less probability of access to education, more likely to be evicted. And you wonder why there are high crime rates? It's nothing to do with culture or race and everything to do with poverty. Poverty and crime are linked. You want less black crime? Then reduce black poverty. It will take investment in black areas in black communities. You make a good argument for reparations.

I used to believe that we could all get along. I used to be behind this type of thinking..., but recently I realize that our cultures will NEVER get along and NEVER mesh. There are blacks who hate whites and their culture and whites who hate blacks and their culture. And in today's society, it's ALL about race and the media loves to divide. BUT, our cultures are so different. I've thrown away my pollyannish belief that we will ever get along.
I hate to speak for any man, and for a black man born and raised in pre-Civil Rights America I hate to do so even more, but my estimation is he would acknowledge in good faith what changes there have been that are undeniable, he would not pretend, I don't think, that black Americans were still without power or representation or that the power and representation they have is held merely by "fake" blacks. But he would of course been horrified at the enduring poverty and violence of black America, and would care less about who is to blame than the problem itself.
Hate is a trap, it destroys. I dont want to be left alone, i want another succesful white man (color dont really matter) to be my mentor. I think that welfare is keeping the black person down today. It keeps children fatherless. It also keeps people out of the workforce where they would otherwise develop to be more fruitful to themselves and their families. Thomas Sowell makes sense to me.

There are blacks who hate whites and their culture and whites who hate blacks and their culture. And in today's society, it's ALL about race and the media loves to divide. BUT, our cultures are so different. I've thrown away my pollyannish belief that we will ever get along.
I do wonder what he would think today. Have things approached the way he wanted it to be, or otherwise?
I hate to speak for any man, and for a black man born and raised in pre-Civil Rights America I hate to do so even more, but my estimation is he would acknowledge in good faith what changes there have been that are undeniable, he would not pretend, I don't think, that black Americans were still without power or representation or that the power and representation they have is held merely by "fake" blacks. But he would of course been horrified at the enduring poverty and violence of black America, and would care less about who is to blame than the problem itself.
It’s too bad that this isn’t the way people speak out against racism today. It seems like today, hate is met with hate.

Hate is a trap, it destroys. I dont want to be left alone, i want another succesful white man (color dont really matter) to be my mentor. Its gonna be tough, theres gonna be.complaints and I might even b🎉tch and moan. But get thru it I will. Its gonna be great. Lets make a million mr Yesorsky, but you do the books. Love frm South Africa where some of my best teachers were old white men. God bless them.
I think that welfare is keeping the black person down today. It keeps children fatherless. It also keeps people out of the workforce where they would otherwise develop to be more fruitful to themselves and their families. Thomas Sowell makes sense to me.
