  • We got one of the first Ryobi HP Compact Impact Wrenches and we've already put it through its paces. Ryobi recently released their new line of HP compact power tools powered by its One+ 18-volt battery platform. The new impact delivers up to 160 ft-lbs of torque. We also test to see whether a larger Amp-Hour battery adds power as well.
    This new Ryobi HP Compact impact wrench is due to hit the shelves in the Home Depot in August 2020. Price for the tool alone (no battery or charger) is $119.

    Upgraded from an older 18v kit. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

    Automotive tech here and my entire shop uses Ryobi 1/4" impacts, the older basic model. Once on person got one, all 4 techs had to have their own. Our very first one just got retired from about 5 years of daily use and abuse and got cannibalised for parts. It only got retired because the gear train got sloppy, still worked all the way to the end! We've only had 1 battery fail out of the 8 that we have. The other brands, Matika, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Bosch, they simply don't hold up nearly as well. And having most of our electric tools on the same battery platform is very convenient. Just the other day I threw away our graveyard of Makita power tools that didn't last nearly that long.
    Being a Ryobi fan, I'm NOT excited for this new impact. I worry about their reliability compared to the older models with all those fancy features, and they no longer sell the old model. I like the power and the new motor design, but I really don't want the power level mode button on the 3/8' or the lights on all new models. I couldn't care less if it was smaller, the old one was a perfect size. In fact, it might be too small, causing me to use an extension when I didn't need to before as the anvil is almost flush with the front of the battery. I just want simple. Simple doesn't break.
    I also wish that Ryobi would introduce a new compact battery. I would assume that it would not be too difficult to make a battery with a smaller profile that still snaps into tools that use the regular battery, maybe with a cheap adapter.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 роки тому

      Wow, that's some great insight and thanks for sharing. I'm like you, especially on my impacts, I like simple. I let my finger do the feathering of the throttle for how much power that I need. But, many new users like these newer features, so I understand where Ryobi (TTi) needs to change. I do wonder what Ryobi is going to do with the battery...it's getting quite old. Thanks for watching.

      @@Shoptoolreviews Interestingly I made a post about the battery on Reddit complaining how they don't have a real competitive cordless ratchet and talked about how it would be possible to update the battery into a more compact form while still keeping compatibility with their current batteries. A Ryobi representative replied and said that there is no guarantees, but it has been brought up before in regards to their compact tools in internal meetings. Very interesting, hopefully they can figure out a way to offer that to the market!

      This one is probably for your average joe to keep in the trunk of their small sedan to do a quick tire change when needed. They have a compact 1/2" not much bigger than this that's got more juice, a mid torque 1/2" that'll handle pickup lug nuts with ease, and a mammoth of a high torque with near double the mid torque's power.

    I am currently using to the compact ryobi tools for over head door installation. We do residential and heavy on the commercial side. It’s a lot of nuts and bolts and drilling through steel and using self tapping screws through steel. Everyone I work with uses dewalt and Milwaukee. Everyone has talked crap but has been impressed by the ryobi compact tools, we will see if they hold up.

      Used my $199 Ryobi combo kit to build decks for 6 years and sold it for more than I paid in perfect working condition. Ryobi impact wrenches are absolutely excellent. I have this one and the P262, the perfect combo. Next is the 3/8 extended ratchet.

    I was awaiting this review. I plan on kicking it a$$ at work. It’s a 3/8. Perfect for inframe fasteners for air lines and wiring brackets and brake pod swaps when only needed to remove the piggyback. I plan on buying only when Ryobi makes it a bundle with a battery as I need a battery upgrade. I use Milwaukee 1/2 mid range daily. Love it. But I wanna give the brand I love to hate a professional try. Great review hit all the rights spots.

    I picked up the cuttoff tool and the grease gun. To be honest I'm amazed now at the quality of the lower end tools now. I have quite a few kobalt 24 max tools and they work great for the price. The ryobi seems the same way. I wish kobalt would build a 3/4 or 1 inch cordless gun though. The milwaukee looks awesome but the 1300 bucks makes me cringe a bit,lol.

      You are correct. We talk around here all the time about how entry-level tools are as powerful, many times more powerful, than the top Pro versions just a few years ago. Kobalt has some great new tools, but I'm not sure they're interested in jumping into that Commercial (3/4" and 1") category for impacts. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    The Ryobi can definitely bust more nuts than the Dewalt 902 (with 2ah battery). The new 5ah on the DeWalt 12v tools including the 902 impact makes a similar difference in power. I guessed 20% on mine, and based in this test, that's in the ballpark.
    -It must be frustrating to be a Ryobi One + tool design engineer, having to just accept that Russian tractor of a battery. There's really no possibility of a "compact" Ryobi cordless tool.

    • @Shoptoolreviews

      Yes, the Ryobi One+ 18V platform is stuck with that large post battery. At the same time, that's what they brag about, that all their tools will still fit the oldest and newest battery. Thanks for watching.

    This is the only video that demonstrates the difference between the two batteries, that I can find anyway. Important because those 4.0 batteries are EXPENSIVE, and I needed to know if a lightweight DIY like me that does tire rotations, etc., can get by with the smaller one.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind reply. If you do a lot of tire rotations, then I'd probably recommend a larger impact with 1/2" anvil. This 3/8" will do it, if the lugs aren't rusty or on too tight, but it will struggle if they are. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

      I doubt it. Ryobi's selling point has always been it's One+ battery system, and has been touted by the company many times over that any One+ battery will work on any One+ tool.
      That's what helped sell me on jumping onto their platform. I can't stand how other brands change their battery systems every few years. It's nice to know that one battery style will support all of my tools, be they brand new, or 15 years old, or as yet to come out.
      Plus, if you're after the slide style batteries, TTI has RIDGID and Milwaukee to cover those bases.

    A lot of people asking, why would i buy this if i already have (insert another brand here) and lets be completely honest, if you already have an impact wrench that works for your application it still wouldn't be worth spending your money regardless of how powerful or compact it would be to replace a tool that already gets the job done.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  4 роки тому

      I do see your point, but I'll have to disagree...let me explain. Let's say you have a 1/2" High Torque impact wrench that puts out 850 ft-lbs of force and weighs 8-pounds. Sure, it will do every job you need to do, but you're always carrying that 8-pounds. If 80% of the jobs you do could be done with an impact that weighs less than 3-pounds, then it probably makes a lot of sense. Of course, you have to take in consideration your budget and your needs, but there is an opportunity for compact tools like this impact.

Which i dont think there is any good reason to pay for a different brand's compact impact wrench if you already have a working one. The differences between brands are largely not really worth the extra cost of investing into a new battery system and or tool for a little more torque or a tiny bit less weight when you already have a plenty powerful light weight one.

    I'm new to impact wrenches and trying to use one of these for tire change. Can the impact wrench strip the lug nuts? When I tried to loose the lug nuts, before it fully loosen, you can hear it working, and I am so afraid that it strip the lug nuts. Is that possible?

    • @Shoptoolreviews

      We didn't test the auto mode. The Auto mode is not measuring torque, it just senses when momentum shifts, therefore triggering to stop or slow down. Thanks for watching.

    Shouldn't you be resting it with an HP battery too? As far as I know, Ryobi's brushless tools have more power if you use an HP battery.

      I tested it with the 1.5Ah batteries that come in a kit with the HP Drill and Impact Driver. I also tested it with the 4Ah HP Lithium+ battery.

      Cost. It would be too expensive to make. If the wires twisted with the battery, the wires would break in a month. If you have spring-loaded brass contacts on a track, this would be too expensive to make.

      You can definitely go that route of using your impact driver for doing bigger jobs. As a DIY or occasional use as a Pro, that's fine. If you're a mechanic, removing larger fasteners frequently, I'd recommend an actual impact wrench. The larger anvil, be it 3/8" or 1/2" will make a difference, especially over time.

    Would really appreciate your opinion on which drill driver/impact combo you would buy. The ryobi hp, dewalt atomic, makita lxt, Milwaukee M18, or rigid? I know some are brushless and some aren’t, but they’re all around $150 and it’s so hard to know which direction to go.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 роки тому +1

      It really depends on what you're using it for. If it's purely DIY and home stuff, then I'd probably stick with the Ryobi or Ridgid. Find the best deal you can. I would stick with brushless, if you can. Brushless definitely makes a difference with Drills and Impact Drivers; other tools, not so much. If you're using them for Professional work, then I'd lean to the Milwaukee, Makita, or DeWalt. Thanks for watching.

    Why does everyone say any tool works with any batter? They don’t!!! Very single tool has certain battery models they work with, if you use a different battery than recommended in the manual it could ruin the tool and they wont replace it under warranty because you didn’t use the recommended batteries. For instance I just bought the p261 1/2” wrench and I have to return it because all my batteries are the hp battery type and are not compatible, they told me it could catch fire, and no warranty because you used a battery not specified. Any tool does not work with any battery, lies by ryobi.

    if your job is to review tools and you are testing breaking strength, you need to have the proper size socket. I'm so tired of seeing videos of people using adapter over adapter. And they do make the sockets to do this in 3/8, you just dont have them.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  4 роки тому +3

      We'd really appreciate it if you could find us a 33mm 3/8" drive deep-well socket. I'm sure it's because we lack the knowledge in finding tools. In all seriousness, if it made a difference, we would have one made. Our point here is, if you are buying any impact tool to consistently use in the top 10% of its capability, then it's the wrong tool for the job. Thanks for watching.

You stand at the desk and talk about it being 3/8th inch, and the battery foot print and how you think its going to be nut busting torque, then you go to the test bench and repeat all of it. I know for you its been hours or maybe days since you filmed the bench segment, but you really don't need to repeat the whole thing.
