    From what research I've done. The Schaller Lockmeister IS the OFR with a different stamp. Made on the same line by the same people out of the same materials

    • @Whiskeylovur
      @Whiskeylovur Місяць тому +4

      Yes, BUT… the Lockmeister (and the nut!) is sold with different radii that you can pick and choose to match your fretboard radius. I’ll be throwing one in a Solar guitar in the near future.

    • @maxammo6282
      @maxammo6282 Місяць тому +1

      Plus they add some kind of coding to the lock blocks and the screws that hold them in. The old school units will eventually start to have surface rust the lockmeister does not rust at all.
      And I can testify to this fact because I have three lockmeister on three different guitars, and I still have a few guitars from the 80s with the old school shallers on them. And I still have to treat them from time to time and get the rust off.

      @JonsterMonster Місяць тому

      OFR is controlled by AP international. They have their QC expectations. It's not just a same production line with some units stamped FR and some Schaller.
      Probably not the same line at all if you look the current pricing difference. I acknowledge the price still having too much air these days.
      Made in Germany costs alot these days 2024...

    The Gotoh 1996T tremolo is such an awesome tremolo, even the studs are locking. Totally thought through 👍

  • @igre0s
    @igre0s Місяць тому +14

    The Gotoh GE1996T is also amazing because the studs are considerably thicker. That distributes energy from its use better around the post, while also allows it to hang onto wood better.

    • @BrunoGomes666
      @BrunoGomes666 Місяць тому +2

      I second that. Also, they have an Alen screw that secures the posts, not only making sure they always stay in place when doing maintenance but also improving contact between the studs and posts. I'll speculate and say it also helps the sustain.

    • @maxammo6282
      @maxammo6282 Місяць тому +2

      @@BrunoGomes666I would say the sustained is improved a little bit. But if you're retro fitting one of these onto a guitar that has a Floyd you better be careful with drilling out those posts because some guitars don't have enough wood around that area. I've seen cases where these have been put in guitars and a couple weeks later the wood blows out because it's not thick enough to hold that bigger stud insert.

    • @BrunoGomes666
      @BrunoGomes666 Місяць тому

      @@maxammo6282 the retrofit has been done a couple of years ago, by me, and yes, I checked for enough wood. Fitment was perfect and believe it or not, intonation was perfect too right out of the box. Amazing bridge.

    One thing to note with the GE1996T is that the studs and inserts are different in dimension to the OFR/1000/Special/licensed ones; the Gotoh ones are larger and longer. So you either use the original studs and inserts which came with your guitar or you'll need to enlarge & deepen the holes for the Gotoh ones.

At the start of the year I finally ventured into the realm of Floyd Rose equipped guitars and the two that I acquired had the Korean made 1000 series on them. One of these guitars is an American made Jackson and I really don't know why they put the 1000 (1500) series on it. Anyhow, after watching this video I decided to go with the Lockmeister due to the different radius options. Wow...what a difference! The 1000 series is incredibly stiff and takes so much work to get it to maintain tuning. This is not the case with the Lockmeister. Thanks for all the work/research you put into your videos!

It’s as smooth as silk, maintains tuning stability no matter what I throw at it, and best off all, doesn’t require the ball ends of the strings to be cut off. I have never checked on their website, but they should sell these trems as upgrade components for other brands.

    Glad to see the Fu-tone on the list, couldn't agree more. I have sorta a standard Fu-tone kit I install on all my Floyd style tremolos. Brass big block, Titanium saddle blocks and screws and red springs. Gives me better note clarity is what I noticed the most, and a bit better sustain.
    I bought a used Peavey V-type exp, mint condition, except the monkey metal trash tremolo and a microphonic neck pickup. I completely gutted the guitar, only kept the body and neck. I replaced the pickups with Seymour Duncan blackouts and bought the Schaller tremolo system, and added the for mentioned Fu-tone parts. When I finally finished it the tremolo has to be the smoothest tremolos I have, unbelievable flutters and returns to zero every time. It's Schallers Floyd 2 style and it just beautiful! The guitar is Electric blue, so I put gold hardware on it just pops!
    And the Fu-tone Titanium I bought was all blue so it adds a nice touch. I wouldn't keep buying Fu-tone if it was crap. One of these days I'll do a full Fu-tone tremolo.
    I have an original Kramer Nightswan Aztec 1989 with an original Floyd Rose, again with Fu-tone Titanium and brass block which is what I measure all tremolos by. Something different and perfect about it.
    Adam at Fu-tone is the man, super nice and haven't had a single issue with anything over the years!
    Great video, Cheers!

    I have experience replacing the Jackson (Takeuchi/TRS) 580/590LP licensed bridges on dozens of 90s/00s MIJ (Akai era and some Fender) imported Jackson guitars. Imported LTD and BC Rich guitars of the era are similar.
    This video skips some important points in order to keep things simple. I want to get a little more specific.
    *1) Your choice of bridge will ultimately depend upon the size of your bridge route.* Many mid priced 90s/00s MIJ guitars have recessed tremolo cavities requiring a more compact bridge. The Original Schaller (1302) is the best fit for these routes because it is slightly wider than the Original Floyd Rose/Schaller Lockmeister but the saddle screws are not as long. This allows you to intonate low tunings while allowing you to do full pull ups. *The Schaller Lockmeister is more like the OFR in that it is not as wide but is longer front to back than the Original Schaller (1302).*
    *2) Replaceable knife edges are not a disadvantage. They allow you to restore the bridge to a new condition without buying a new baseplate.*
    *3) The locking nut shelf on many MIJ import guitars is shallower. This requires an R8 sized nut of about .225". It is made by Floyd Rose and will work with Schaller Original (1302) bridges. Schaller only makes R2/R3 nuts. If you use an R2/R3 nut in an R8 nut shelf your locking nut will be very high and raise your action.*
    *4) Jackson guitars are usually 12-16" compound radius. The Original Schaller (1302) is 10-16" compound. This means your strings will arc slightly in the low registers.* Mismatched fretboard/bridge radii will work but will change how the strings feel. Your low and high E strings will be lower than your center strings. This can be corrected with shims if you want a flatter feel, but I have come to enjoy a 10" radius because it makes barre chords easier on the interior strings. I can also tell what strings I am on without looking because the string heights are different.
    *5) You do not have to replace all of your import guitar's hardware.* Because MIJ guitars are metric and Schaller bridges use larger diameter screws, I do not bother removing the bridge posts and redrilling the holes to insert new studs. I simply remove the old bridge and put in the new one. It works fine on the skinnier import posts. I retain the import guitar's string claw and locking nut if it is not worn down. If it holds tuning, I keep it. If it does not hold tuning, I use a new Floyd Rose R8 nut.
    *6) Like with the tone wood debate, you don't need harder/heavier steel at every point of the bridge to improve tone. What you do need is quality saddles/string blocks that do not slip, knife edges that do not wear, and a tone block that permits flutter. Stay away from softer iron and zinc in these crucial parts. Buying these parts individually almost costs as much as a new complete bridge, so you won't be saving any money by buying individual components.*
    A heavier bridge will make bridge movement less smooth--similar to adding more springs. Also, a larger tone block will prevent you from replacing the back plate on thinner bodied guitars. Most of the time the smallest tone block is sufficient. The tone of different metals does not justify their cost. Paying for a titanium bridge produces diminishing returns because you can compensate for tone differences at other points in your signal chain.
    *7) Guitars with string retainers like some LTDs tend to hold their tuning better than guitars without them.* My Jacksons lack retainers and do not stay in tune as well as my LTDs. Tightening the string retainer (lowering it closer to the headstock) can prevent tuning difficulties with Floyd Rose style bridges.
    *8) Cheaper Ibanez guitars are the hardest to retrofit because their bridge designs are proprietary. This is why I avoid most Ibanez guitars.* The Gotoh 1996t is the closest to an Original Edge bridge, but it is not guaranteed to fit a cheap Ibanez guitar. A new Original Edge is about $300 and not worth the cost in my opinion. Floyd Rose style bridges may or may not fit Ibanez guitars depending upon the model and year of production. Ibanez's Jemsite has a chart on which bridges fit what guitars. *Basically, with Ibanez you pay more money for proprietary bridge designs that are expensive and hard to replace, low action, and a flat fretboard. I do not think these features justify the cost.*
    *9) For those of us who do not like low F# on 8 string guitars, true innovations in bridge designs are needed, such as a multiscale Floyd Rose bridge that allows an 8 string guitar with a high A string that can survive a full minor/major 3rd pull up without breaking.* I have reached out to Floyd Rose. They do not seem interested in creating a multiscale floating bridge design that would shorten the high A string to below 23.5" while keeping the low B string at 25.5" or more. The fret slant for an A E A D G B E A guitar would probably be quite extreme.
    *10) Other bridges like the AxMax had many promising design improvements over the Floyd but were not able to catch on with players.* The AxMax combined aspects of the Floyd and Kahler and was very innovative. Unfortunately it did not catch on. AxMax videos can be found on UA-cam but they are no longer in production.
    *11) Your bridge is sufficient if it holds tuning under aggressive use and permits flutter.* Taking the FU-Tone approach by adding more metal makes the bridge heavier and more expensive. You can replicate the sound of a heavier bridge by simply turning up the bass on your amp.
    *12) Ultimately, the Original Schaller (1302) is the best bridge to use for imported guitars with small tremolo cavities. The Original Floyd Rose still has its place because it is offered in finishes like satin chrome that Schaller does not offer.* Schaller also does not offer a 7 string 1302 bridge. If a guitar uses a Floyd Rose Special, I will replace it with an OFR. If the saddle screws are too long, I will try to replace the Floyd Rose Special with a Schaller 1302.
    *13) I have found Floyd Rose 1000 bridges to be similar in quality to OFR bridges. They are just made in Korea and not Germany.* You can tell they are 1000 models because the saddle blocks have rounded edges and smoother corners compared to the OFR versions. The excellent and discontinued Chinese made Charvel Desolation line (2008-ish) featured these bridges, Seymour Duncan Blackout pickups, and mahogany neck thru designs stock. I have not tried the newer Floyd Rose 1500 series.
    Hope this helps.

    Nice Morbid Angel shirt \m/
    One of the first things I changed on my Floyd is get a socket for a pop in arm. Those arms with the collar nuts suck a$$. They are either too stiff or they rattle (slightly).
    Also, FU Tone ftw. I have their brass block and titanium parts on my Floyd. It's not cheap, but worth it.

      I'm not sure about the titanium alloy parts due to a tendency to gall.
      Also most of the bolts available are of the softer, high aluminium content Ti alloys.
      On the other hand if you're a sweaty beast that rusts steel on contact, then not only are titanium alloys generally resistant to (visible) oxidation, but the oxidation that does build up can be easily wiped off with no chemical treatment.

      Money.
      They aren't cheap, whereas Schaller and the Asian OEM suppliers have the economy of scale in their favour.
      See how we're getting genuine Seymour Duncan pickups on price points that are far lower than 15-20 years ago?
      Obviously some of the big factories have approached Seymour and struck a deal for buying huge stocks.
      Only a handful of small custom shops are offering the Sophia as an official, non special request option.
      It's an intriguing design but nothing I'd spend the extra on, especially once UK import fees (10% import, 20% VAT + rip off processing charges before delivery) are slapped on top.

    Save yourself anger and frustration, and get the right trem block size. Fuck what the company put in the guitar, because sometimes it will not be correct. I got nearly the same size as what was on there previously, but it would not work and causing tuning issues. Turns out the iisse was that the guitar needs the next block size and my other guitar (essentially the same guitar with a different finish) had the correct block size.

      Floyd Rose and Garry Kahler are friends, so I don't think he'd be taking it too badly.
      There was some legal action between the two companies, with Floyd suing Kahler over their fulcrum bridges and Kahler suing over fine tuning patents, but according to Gary, Floyd had no personal part in this.
      Floyd held the patents but by that point I think the company/brand itself was owned or ran by others?

      Nothing wrong with Asian manufacturing.
      By now they can directly compete at any price point.
      I think the issue is that a lot of people have called the 1000 series a pile of shit, leading to speculation on the QC front and how much out of spec they allow their tooling to get before replacement.
      There's always a bit of brand snobbery and some won't consider anything but a German Schaller made Floyd a true Floyd, not helped by the 1000 series and even the Special making use of the "Original" tag, which could be considered misleading.
      On the subject of quality, Schaller had a period of serious QC problems after the old man died and I think something happened to his son as well?
      I don't know if it was financial and ownership issues that complicated things, but Schaller hit a real rough patch some years ago.
      John Suhr said this was the reason why Suhr guitars adopted the Gotoh.

Everybody hates these. Funny Fender said put in a Hip shot Tremsetter and set the bridge to whammy up and down and GO. 27 yrs ago I did this and haven't adjusted since. Now in 2024 this guitar might need a fret crowning but other that that this workhorse of a guitar is STILL AMAZING
