"... ... a Europe filled with the dreams of generations refined and perfected with elegance and charm... ... " so well said!!! You have a remarkable ability to put feelings into words. If every European politician could hear your naration, things could be so much better...

It feels good to see the european spirit is still shared by people, even it is under serious attack from many sides.
It touched me when watching the episode, realizing that there is even people from abroad who understand and probably also share this spirit.

David Attenborough has been probably the greatest narrator of our time - but I believe Maya, you have the skill and passion to be up there with the best. It is a joy to listen and experience through your words.

It is difficult to believe with your reputation of excellence in your videos, that you could make one that is even better! Strasbourg, by Magic Carpet, is resplendent in history, architecture, cultures, and beauty, accented with cuisine by day, and the music of the night! Thanks for the geographic orientation from above to fill us in on location in reference to the rest of the region! THIS is the way to travel from my armchair!

Roël d´Haese's work on display at the Esplanade is arguably the most difficult to access in the sculpture alley and also the one that most shocked some of the public.
This sculpture, made in lost wax bronze, which brutally and dramatically assembles disparate elements, some of which are human limbs, can indeed be described as monstrous.
This is because this is a real cry of horror and protest from the sculptor following the assassination, on January 17, 1961, of Patrice Lumumba, main animator of the movement for the independence of the Congo, by Mobutu's troops, with the support of the Belgian army. After being tortured and shot, his body was cut up and dissolved in acid.
“To Lumumba! "Will be the rallying cry of the Congolese peasants who will revolt after the news of this death.
Roël d´Haese is a Belgian sculptor of Flemish expression. He was born in Geraardsbergen in 1921 and died in Bruges in 1996.
Health concerns in the 1950s forced him to give up direct carving in stone. He then turned to metalwork and work in welding metal and bronze assemblies. He works regularly with César and Tinguely, with whom he participates in joint exhibitions.
Most often made in lost wax bronze, his sculptures bear witness to a primitivist and expressionist influence. They combine humor, the fantastic and the tragic.
Resulting from twists, compressions and assemblages of dramatic elements, Haese's creations very often take on a monstrous dimension.
"They catch the great fear of human beings and squeeze it into a sculpture. Evil is imprisoned and during this time we can breathe."

It's a long time since I've seen anything that comes anywhere near it on TV channels or anything else for that matter.
The story line that runs beneath is fantastic and encapulates the viewer, by promising even more to come. And that is achieved, wholeheartedly, by the jam session at the end.

I am sure this is your most amazing episode so far. I love "seeing" these beautiful places though your beautifully eloquent narratives. I grew up in the tiny but historic city of Lichfield... but I don't think I ever really looked up beyond the shopfronts that now occupied these beautiful historic buildings. We took it for granted and sadly it has now been developed into a modern monstrosity of urban development that lacks the harmony achieved by our European cousins.

What a lovely video! Thank you so much for sharing this and your wonderful series!
When I stumbled on your series a few weeks ago, I was hoping that you would have a segment on Alsace and Strasbourg in particular because I have Alsatian heritage and visited the beautiful city some years ago. My great grandparents emigrated to the US in 1874 from Mertzwiller and Haguenau near Strasbourg after the FrancoPrussian War and I treasure that connection.
You briefly mentioned the local dialect, Elsassisch, which, like Flemish or Dutch, is a derivation of the German language, in this case, generally related to Alemannic or Swabian dialects, but more specifically to Schweizerdeutsch from Switzerland. Many, if not most, of Alsatians, or Elsassers, with German sounding surnames, like mine, are descendants of Catholic immigrants from Switzerland, who were recruited by Louis XIV to repopulate Alsace, or Elsass, after the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War. France acquired much of Alsace in 1648 from the Austrian Habsburgs after that conflict, which led to the province going back and forth until 1945.
Because of my Alsatian heritage, I always view videos on UA-cam that show Strasbourg, and it’s very easy to say that yours was the most interesting. Thanks again!
BTW: I enjoyed some great Django Reinhardt music on a Sunday afternoon at Chez Moeder in the St. Gilles district of Belgium a few years back. There’s another larger and more well known Chez Moeder nearer to the central Grand Place. It may be worth your while to seek it out whenever you find yourself in Brussels.

As an artist/writer I felt I was home. Often friends would come and grab me, 'Robin quick I borrowed a bike from Marianne and we can go to The Eagles Nest' or, some such. Alsace was part of The Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1870 until 1918, so between the end of the 1870 war when it was annexed by the Empire until the end of the first world war when it was ceded back to France. Like many other regions in France, including the North of France (with a lot of Flamish dialects), Britanny with Gaëlic, Provence with a dialect that was closer to Italian, and many other regions in France, it had its own dialect that was issued from German like you have Swiss German (that doesn't make Switzerland of any part of it part of Germany). Compared to Canada, European history is quite complicated and borders have moved constantly over the centuries. Part of the Canadian history actually comes from those movements, alliance shiftings and also quite often family inheritance or results of a lost war by one country or another.
All European countries are a mix of various smaller ones that eventually became absorbed through the centuries.

see I told you Strasbourg is worth visiting , I was born in Strasbourg and grew up just 20 km west . Good job explaining Alsace and the city . The country side West known as the Vosges is also very pretty .

Now Aladino’s caulking work is complete. Soaked in Django. Music as metaphor. What a delightful episode. Thankyou 🙏

Great work with the series, inspiring!
Don't forget Hildegard von Bingen and Marksburg. The first, a medieval superwoman , the second a great castle.
