    I’m so impressed that your library has sewing equipment!!

    It is super cool to hear that your library offers something like this too. I just hosted a garment repair event today with a few fellow students at our library 😊

      @highfiberknits  Рік тому

      That sounds wonderful! I think garment repair is a little bit of an overlooked aspect of sewing in theUA-cam/instagram sewing community that I am exposed to but that I hope to explore a little more! I have a pair of pants where the hem is coming undone after several years of wear, that I’d love to repair without tape

    Hey, practice makes perfect :) Great job for a first sewing project. I had some good tips early on like lining up the seams in the crotch and start sewing there, finish the back, start in the crotch again, finish the front, and any misalignments can be removed when you do the waist.

    How awesome about the library having a sewing studio. I think if perfection is a hurdle to getting started learning a craft, you will never get anywhere. Good on you for just jumping in with both feet and accepting whatever the outcome was. FWIW i think your pajama shorts look super cute!

      Thank you! The sweet fabric does a lot of heavy lifting, but I’m so happy to have accomplished a project!

    Oh my second comment 😂 pit pads!! I work in film as a costumer and we use them A LOT! One option we do if we don’t want the weight OR visibility OR the garment is a lot of $$$$ in regards to a single use pit pad is we stick them to a cami or a short sleeve tee that is layered underneath. There are also pads that we quickly stitch in before setting an actors room because they either don’t like the extra layer of clothing or prefer the stability of a stitched in pit pad. I never thought of looking up actual garments though! Thank you for sharing 🤩
    Also, silk is a warm material. We use silk thermal layers in the cool/cold months to help keep cast warm. So defiantly don’t limit silk to only a summer fibre 🥰 it’s quite versatile!

      Oh!! Use granny’s spot remover for silk stains. It works well and is really gentle

      Love this insiders look! It sounds like you have such an interesting job that requires creative problem solving. It’s also a great reminder that everyone sweats! I am pleasantly surprised at how much conversation this topic has generated, and I will report back on the garment when I get to use it!

    I always love your videos😊 For your blouse no 1, the sun can do somme miracles on stains. After washing lay your blouse in the sun to dry ☀️☀️☀️ it has saved a lot of my kids clothes 😂

    Congratulations on your first sewing project!! My jaw dropped when you explained the amazing resources for makers that your library offers. Incredible! How thoughtful and egalitarian of them. What a great way to be able to dip your toes in! I am just starting on my first “serious” lace project, the Kuutar top by Sari Nordland. I find I have to concentrate so much, I’m impressed with your finished Cathedral! Of course you are NOT the only person concerned about sweat marks on their beautiful silks, etc. so far I’ve only knit looser summer tops for that very reason! Let us know how the modal undergarment works out, please!
    I love listening to what other knitters like and don’t like about yarns they try. Don’t apologize for your opinion, it helps others know what to look out for! Happy knitting and sewing!

    Ummm. I’m SO jelly about your library!! That’s such an amazing resource! I’ve been sewing since I was 13 so… well over 15 years now and I really love it. I’m new to knitting so I’m opposite you but have a lot of the same excited feelings of learning a new skill (I’m also making a pair of Birkenstocks for my partner & I that I started yesterday which is super fun. I haven’t made sandals before).
    Something that I find a fun thing to do (or maybe just interesting) is if you remake the PJ shorts, and you can see how much you’ve already learned.
    Anyways YAY!! So fun 💕💕

    Firstly, I love love love your ripple bralette! I've made two JessieMaed patterns before and I agree with you that they are exceptionally well written.
    Secondly, well done on your first sewing project. And wow I am super jealous of the sewing facilities at your library, that's so useful!

    Be patient with the sewing. It's a very different skill to master. Shorts are a great place to start tho! And the flipped fabric legit looks like an intentional contrast design element. Cute fabric choice too!

    Would love to learn to sew and would love to learn crochet one day. It is so great your library had machines. Wonder if there are any here in NY that have sewing machines. Must look into that. I totally understand the sweat issue. I sweat like a guy in summer. I recently bought a white cotton yarn (3 skeins) to make a summer top, and then had buyers remorse after the fact thinking of yellow stained underarms..i actually returned them. Funny enough i changed it for a marled merino yarn, and not sure i love the marled affect, but will see.Anyway seems like you have a good solution. Thanx for sharing all your wonderful projects. Your cathedral really beautiful!

    Yay for your first sewing project…. You totally had the right idea about it! And just like knitting it will improve with more projects. That is so cool your library has all that… I have my own machine but when I started that would have been so nice

    I do wear stuff under my sweaters. What I found works best for comfort and sweat is a very think linen jersey top. Short or long sleeves, depending on whatever you want it to depend on ^^

    Congratulations on adding sewing to your skills set! That’s a lifetime useful skill that is very much like knitting or crocheting in that it’s also a life long learning adventure with new to you techniques, fabric and patterns choices and learning how those all interact together to achieve your desired results. Also congratulations on your additional academic qualifications accomplishments:)

    I’ve had GREAT luck with Numi! I’m considering buying two more in the non-cropped version. I will say they run small. I was between sizes and was glad I sized up. It’s still skintight but not uncomfortable.

    Even though your pj bottoms are not “perfect”, you should be quite satisfied to complete what you set out to do. I understand your need to hold yourself to a higher standard with your knitting but, honestly, shouldn’t we just enjoy our crafts without any additional pressure? Even from ourselves?? I have been wanting to try sewing a simple shift dress for some time now. Your accomplishment has inspired me to just dive on in! Thank you😊

    I also have had a lukewarm experience with Double Sunday! I was surprised because I LOVE Sunday, and was expecting the same quality. But double sunday definitely has an odd spin like you described. I found it loose and splitty. I'm on the same page where I'd use it again, but I'm not running to get it.

    I got some cream that is anti sweat, and it really works. I use it for the face and neck, before I put sunscreen on. It really works! But-- I have stopped wearing white tees bc my neck sweat will stain.
    I think you could also explore over dying...

    Re: yellowing sweat stains. The yellowing is due to chemicals in the deodorant you use. Since I’ve moved to using either Wild or Nuud I don’t have yellow stains anymore! You do go through a ‘detox’ period where I was very stinky for a few weeks when going from traditional to greener deodorants. But worth it in the end!

  • @kennedykings3909
    @kennedykings3909 Рік тому +1

    FYI "sweat stains" is a misnomer. The aluminum in antiperspirant is what is actually causing the stain. Switching to an aluminum free deodorant while likely help a lot. I think that researching the best ways to reduce the stains will be helpful too. I am less knowledgeable in this area. Good luck!

    @greenpurl8482 Рік тому

    Oh, Emily. You are being too self-critical about your first sewing project. I love that you used thrifted pillowcases for the shorts and it's okay that they are not PERFECT! As with anything else, it can take several years (or at least several projects) before you become familiar with construction techniques. I think you did a great job and hope you will consider sewing again. I've been sewing since I was 5 years old and am still learning new tricks. Good for you!

    yay, I'm excited that you're getting into sewing🎉 and it's so cool you're library is offering this😮 I learned sewing on my mum's old sewing machine but definitely would've loved a service at my library like that :) also do you by any chance know how much kfo pure silk you used for your Penelope kerchief? I have some leftover from a cami and was thinking of making one too, but I actually think it might not be enough :/

    • @highfiberknits
      @highfiberknits  Рік тому

      Great question! I held it double and required far less than a ball! Since it grows wider and wider you can go until you’re just about out of yarn and then do the icord and give it a dramatic wet block! You could also consider doing a contrasting or complementary icord so you don’t need to fret about leave enough for that last stretch of the project!

      @deborahway8636 not everyone wants their clothing to be loud & proud. ;-) Staples get so much more wear and so if you think about it actually make more sense as you get the most wear out of costly yarn.
