I'm honestly surprised. I'm so used to rich executives getting away with things with slaps on the wrist. Usually the rich can just buy their way out of the legal system.
Only reason he got in trouble is because he also stole from the rich. Which is the considered an actual crime.

Of all the scams, NFTs were the most comical. Like, why would I pay 30k for a digital picture? Snake oil

The key thing to remember about the NFT craze is that it was essentially just a way for people who had lots of Etherium (which is useless) to cash that out faster/easier into USD (which is useful).
People fell for it for the same reason anyone falls for any scam. They were tricked by the hype.
"FOMO" is the key. People who don't wanna miss out on the "next big thing"
NOBODY could intelligently explain what an nft was.
Generally speaking, if anything's selling point is FOMO, you aren't missing out on anything worthwhile. Quality content once again Cam.

Thank you for this series. My grandma was scammed a while back and was so embarassed, she refused to report it. English isnt her first language and she has had horrible experiences with the police (we are mexican). She felt so stupid and i know it got to her. They targeted her in a target parking lot, of all places. She had just lost her youngest son very suddenly and out of nowhere, her first child to die. She and other older latinos also targeted a lot by MLMs because they know they are usually uneducated, dont speak great english, are usually religious, and dont trust authorities.
I hope more victims will feel comfortable getting help and talking about their experiences. Talk to your family members too.

Sadly not only in the US, over here in Europe it's just as bad.
We got basic economy lessons in school, but non of the real fundamentals, not even how to handle money responsible and the most basic thing: don't spend what you don't have, allthough that might be a really foreign thing for American citizens because of the normalisation of credit cards.

I felt so gaslit as a 3D/digital artist when the myths of NFTs were exploding. All my friends and peers were telling me to sell my art as NFTs. I was the only one in my circles who thought it was a shallow, get-rich-quick scheme by and for fintech bros. It felt soulless, the opposite of what *art* should be. It sucked to feel so ostracized in my own community, but it also showed me what kind of people I was really in community with. I’m glad the last few years have venerated me because I really did wonder if I was just being a stubborn, prideful artist. I mean, I was/am that for sure, but at least I wasn’t also a grifter.
Also, loving what I’ve seen of you so far. Congratulations on merits of your work and the luck of the algorithm.

When I saw so many of my photography peers go into NFT’s and suddenly become financial experts, I knew there was something wrong, especially when they started following notable con artists such as Jordan Belfort (aka the wolf of Wall Street). I almost got duped into the NFT craze but had my doubts and lo and behold, it was nothing more than a scam. The photographers who knew about it before they told everyone got their bag but everyone else got left empty handed.
schemer 101, never talk about it until your bag is secured. then get everyone else to make that bag bigger
@@CamJames the ones that secured the bag had insider knowledge since they were all part of the same friend group where one of them coincidentally worked for a crypto firm. I know a few of them personally but I wasn’t close enough to get in the grift.
I'm just a hobbyist photographer, but I saw that NFT craze sweep through my photo circles as well, with some of them getting very heavy handed about NFTs. It was a real turn off. I've noticed not a single one has ever publicly recanted their fervor for it. I can forgive curiosity, but evangelical approach was disheartening.
@@johnchedsey1306 I was in a room with most of the people who shilled NFTs to other members of the photography community in November and they didn’t mention anything about NFTs. They swept it under the rug and lived their lives, although they now have more money than they did before one of their own got the Intel about the NFT craze.

One of the worst things about crypto is the massive impact on the environment. All that excessive amounts of electricity used to mine it causes more pollution from power plants and contributes to the climate crisis.

The comparison first of all only applies to Proof of Work chains, networks like Ethereum use Proof of Stake thus do not consume significant amounts of energy.
Additionally you need to compare the equivalent cost of the legacy banking systems costs like maintaining physical branches, etc to have an apples to apples comparison.
don't think there is an apples to apples comparison; crypto is in a league of its own. the ecological damage is a requirement, not a side effect. banks have humans to heat and cool, not chained computer banks intentionally exhausting their limits to solve complex problems for crypto coins.
and yes, this applies to PoW.

Also, proof of stake doesn't eliminate the ridiculous power draw it just drastically lessens it, it's relatively more efficient, but compared to non-crypto payment processors, there is a degree of difference that is just completely insurmountable.

On the subject, I had a mate who i thought lucked out in crypto, said he was able to retire early in 2021. Quit his job and everything. He never cashed out though and had to go through the soul crushing thing of getting his job back. He said he just got so caught up in the hype and wanted more, more, more despite have earned what would have been enough to last a lifetime.

I've got friends still playing around with Crypto. I never fell for that because despite being desperate, I'm just a bit more paranoid than typical. Like. My actual Bank called me the other day and asked for some of my info and I HUNG UP on them and Called the Main Branch number. They verified it was actually them but *still*. Lol.

I find the tech behind crypto interesting but I just don't see a good real world use for it at the moment. Old fashioned processes are just faster and more convenient for stuff like payment. Also Venezuela minting crypto is crazy, you'd think they have bigger things to worry about.
i agree, we're many years from this tech having broad appeal beyond a speculative financial instrument. the problem is that new tech is always turned into scams immediately, before it matures.
Venezuela did it to attempt to raise revenue for the gov't, to give them an easier way to avoid financial sanctions, and in attempt to stabilize the country's credit. Maduro is almost certainly misrepresenting the #s (it was likely purchased by the gov't itself or by party members). Having a gov't backed coin is exactly what people who use crypto don't want.

From a purely academic standpoint, its impressive that crypto influencers were able to trick people into believing they were the real crypto believers when they where holding the bag, like the whole "hodl gang" thing is some top tier manipulation. People were proud to hold the bag, and through this you could get people to defend you scamming them and insulate themselves from criticism. Its cult tactics explicitly, and it shows the power of confirmation bias and sunk cost fallacy
precisely. holding toxic positions has turned into a weird internet obsession built up on Discord chats and it somehow worked.
@@CamJames nothing surprise me under capitalism anymore lol, we got a lot of desperate people and a society telling us we can become rich in an instant. People just forget that those small percentage of people who got rich were a tolerated outcome not an actual desire. Let a few people achieve massive wealth and you have a hook that can last seemingly forever.
