As a 42 yr old divorced father of three, and serial fledgling entrepreneur, people claiming their children got in the way are part and parcel copping out.
My children have stretched me to grow and take chances (as I’ve gotten older and wiser, more calculated, as I’ve gone along😅😅) that I never would have when I was single.
To the parents stumbling across this thread for confirmation bias, I just want to share that you may have to start smaller, you may have to wait until after 10 or 11, after you’ve put the kids to bed and gotten those few precious *and vital* minutes of QT with your partner, before you can spend any time on your project, but you absolutely owe it to yourself and your family to start, even if it’s small. Also, leverage your network, namely other people’s time, money, relationships, and resources.
Partner up with individuals like these childless people in your network, with nothing but time, and seek ways to collaborate in mutually beneficial ways.

You lose nothing and gain the knowledge that you did what you wanted to do and gave it your full attention. Best case scenario, you build an incredible career and keep getting better with time. Don't neglect your bills, don't neglect your money, save up and plan for failure. That fear of leaving is always something because it's rooted in reality. Over 50% of all small businesses that open fail and close within the first 2 year. Much the same, what you're saying doesn't necessarily apply to only doing UA-cam or something in the art/entertainment industry. If you hate your job and always wanted to do something else, go do that something else. I used to work retail and I always wanted to get into IT. So I studied and got my first certifications while working. When I got my certifications, I started applying for jobs and I was amazed at how many job opportunities opened up to me. Fast Forward 10 years later, I'm a network engineer making close to 6 figures a year, and all it took was that one step. So I agree with what you're saying. Don't let the fear of failure stop you from pursuing your dream or bettering yourself. Your advice applies well to things that aren't even financial related, like getting into shape and going to the gym. I was TERRIFIED of going to the gym by myself because I'm super awkward and antisocial. But now, I don't even know why I was so afraid to make that first step because it's honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. I feel better than I've ever felt in my whole life.
Thanks for sharing. Keep on keeping on, and may good fortune continue to smile upon you.

While we may not always get this right 100% of the time: it is best to operate and make decisions from a place of love and curiosity, not fear. Fear can help keep us alive, but it does not give us a good place to live.

The video hit hard. I've been trying to balance my writing with my full time job, but lately, my 9-5 has been shredding my sanity. I repeatedly fall into a cycle of being determined to succeed with my books, getting pushed into a ridiculous amount of frustration, sinking into depression, having my support network attempt to pull me OUT of said depression, and then back to the start again. My age makes that all the more pressing, and makes me even more frustrated when I'm constantly told not to worry about it. Not to mention I seem to be terrible at marketing myself lol. I am tired of pouring my life into companies that only see me as a number--even more so tired of always getting their work done, and rarely getting enough of my own done. I'm sick of being told this is how I'm supposed to live my life--because I hear it and have heard it CONSTANTLY. I don't know if I have enough cushion to quit, though, and it makes me feel very stuck.
This is all probably TMI. I'm happy that you did what you needed to do. We only get one time around the track and it's sad how many of us are made to waste it on things we think are correct just because someone else told us they were.

If it becomes obvious that I can make more money doing my side hustle, I'll quit my day job early. Otherwise, I will build my net worth until I am not dependent on a job that I need so I can pursue a job I want.

My story: I've been fired. Twice. The last time, I decided to take destiny into my own hands. I was doing UA-cam on the side and gained 50k subscribers, and found a love for video editing. I made a portfolio website for my video editing and started cold emailing 100s of UA-cam channels, then finally landed three. The clients I started working with I'm still working with to this day! They love my work, I love working for them, and I make enough money to live comfortably and save for retirement. I don't have to look for clients anymore because they refer me all the time cause they love my work. I'm my own boss, I run my own business, no corporate bs, no multiple meetings every day, no office politics, I make my own hours, and my clients are amazing to work with. I love that I took the scary jump to try doing this and I'm so happy I did. 😁

Commuting a hour each day, burning gas, and messing with sleep schedule has put me into a place where I feel I need my employer to survive. I know I have gifts and talents to work with people and perhaps teach and/or consult them. I’m 28 going on 29 and I just don’t want to waste my life never realizing what could’ve happened if I stopped stressing over my next paycheck. I started my business right before Covid started. I was 28…. A Network Engineer with a Mechanical Engineering background. My business was PRESSURE WASHING. With my knowledge, I was able to see what my competitors are doing and learn skills on my own to diversify my services outside of pressure washing. I got my creative skills going and started creating content and reinvesting in my business. Within the first year, I was making 5-6k a week and this was enough for me to jump off the porch and officially- quit my job. Was it fearful? Absolutely, but I have never looked back. Currently today in 2024, I own a pressure washing business, an epoxy coating and pool restoration business, AND a wood restoration and wood staining business. I pull in about $400k a year and i’m just getting started. If you have vision and the willpower, BET ON YOURSELF. Worst case scenario- you can just go back to your old job but don’t live in regret you never took the risk!

I am kinda of this thinking but with school. I am at my third year of University and it's so frustrating. It's not like i have a plan or anything but I just feel so out of touch with the system. I used to barely go to classes but around year 2 I changed that and attended more classes and i tried to learn( i really did ) but that has changed nothing. Infact it has made me even more hateful of being in class. I barely stay awake in most classes and the ones I do, I don't learn nada.
All this just made me more aware of flaws in the educational system. In my secondary and primary school years i used to be a straight A's and B's student with a zeal for learning but now i can't even read a page anymore without getting distracted and I have just lost the passion to learn in general. Sometimes I think I am a different person when comparing to my younger self. I have become so complacent to consequences that honestly it frightens me myself. I just don't care anymore!
Now I won't be dropping out or anything like that mainly because of my parents and the financial investments they have made on my education( i attend a pretty expensive school for my country's standard ) but sometimes I just think to myself "What's the point of all this? Of Anything?". The scary thing is that i have no plans or dreams that i wanna chase, I am just so lost. I just hope I can find something to get me out of my funk because sometimes thinking about the future for me can be scary because I just can't imagine anything without it looking like fantasy.
I am not depressed or anything but just a person tryna find a purpose for myself.

Congrats welcome to the life! I've been a full-time DJ since I quit my union job in 2017.
It wasn't easy! My girlfriend left. During covid I fell back on bike deliveries. Spent weeks living off ramen and black coffee.
But when you look up and see 300 college students singing along to "one dance", help make a married couple's dream come true, see your entire city from on top a parade float, or watch your little hair salon gig turn into a block party you understand happiness and fulfillment at a level most people will never understand.
That lack of understanding is why most people will try to shoot down. They give you more praise for landing a minimum wage job then a $5,000 show. They'll talk about consistency and stability, then hit you up for a loan the moment they get fired.
It's not an easy path, but it's worth taking. Keep on it no matter what!

I think your video really pushed me to help make up my mind, about tye plans I have for pursuing a life in activism

    Good on you, Cam!
Being child-free has allowed me to start my (entrepreneur) journey into the medical field working with seniors. Everything i want to accomplish is going to take a few years, but it's well worth it. I finally feel in control of how I build my future and not how to build someone else's.
Thank you for your effort and wise words. Cheers to a bright future 🥂

Thanks for making it clear that you are not advocating for recklessly quitting. I can see it now.
    Cam fan: “I quit”
    Boss:“Why?”
Cam fan: “Because Cam told me to”
Boss:“Who the f is Cam? You know Cam Newton? I get it good luck”

I've been self-employed over 20 years. I would encourage anyone to do it if it is in you and you have self-discipline. Don't just leap on a dream with no fall-back plan. Be already working on it while you do your full-time or part-time and then take the jump once you see your dream has legs.

Really like this. I became a creator a year and a half ago. I hate my voice and use AI for that, however I do write all my own scripts. They are pretty novice, but it gave me some type of opportunity to have a creative outlet. Like you, I have been writing most of my life, however I never knew where or how to channel that. I think there is this misconception people have about creators, where they assume because you have ads on your videos, you're making a lot of money, which is not true at all. This speaks to your point about not just doing something for financial incentive, because at times there is none. It has to be something you enjoy and that fulfills some type of void. Believe me, I am so incredibly happy you were able to make the transition and quit what was probably a soul crushing position, because I have definitely been in that boat. However, even without kids, that is not really an option. I am incredibly happy you were able to do that. Been watching your channel and it is wonderful to see it become successful.

thank you for the support, and i'm sending positive energy your way for the channel! we all start somewhere, and I'd encourage you to learn from other creators. I absorbed everything I liked and didn't like from my favorite creators, then put my unique twist on all of it.

This video gave me some comfort. I want to play piano and trumpet on broadway. I played both instruments since I was a child. I am 37 now and I am choosing to pursue that dream. And even if I dont succeed, I am happy I gave it a chance.
