Great demonstration! I'm starting to assemble a home studio right now and I'll definitely be checking one of these out. Also you did a really good job explaining why high wattage valve amps don't make a lot of sense in a modern context, I really wish someone would have explained that to me ten years ago when I was trying to bring my Marshall TSL to tiny venues and was always wondering why the front of house hated me so much.
I was just about to purchase this unit. After reading these comments and people with unanswered questions, I've decided to look for something else. Thanks!
I used to own a powerball II and I sold it for my Peavey 6505. However, this preamp is very useful, sounds very good, has balanced gain that can sound great with a boost and it's small.
Many years ago I was looking for my ultimate amp. I decided on Engl. Engl E530 Tube Preamp Engl E850/100 Tube Power Amp 2 x Engl E212VHB Pro cabs Still own this rig. The scariest part is the cost of retubing. The power amp alone has 8 x 6L6GC and 3 x ECC83. Matched sets required.
@@uselesstunes3888 Thats amazing! Looking forward to see the channel evovle :) Maybe begin using something to fill out the silence in the videos :) they are very selint ;)
Hello. E530 owners, help me figure it out. 🙏 Just became the owner of engl e530. The point is this. The instrument output level is too low (-18 dB) and the guitar in bypass mode (when preamp defeat is pressed) sounds louder (-6dB) than the hight gain channel at maximum volume on this channel. That is, the signal after passing through the device circuit becomes quieter by 12dB, at maximum volume. Is this normal or is my e530 defective?
Looking on e530 for a few years without any opportunity to try it, but i absolutely agree with your opinion, its definitely great solution for home use. Great vid, as always, thank you man) btw if you want to have recto-ish type of sound try sl/ld preamp by russian company RnR amps, its good to have both e530 and sl/ld.
Basically EQ of lead channel is similar to rectifier in modern mode. Just misleading naming unlike ENGL E430 Tube Toner preamp. Lo mid is just usual middle, Hi mid is usual treble while treble is preamp presence (Hi cut) as in rectos or E430.
Are you supposed to run the stereo cable from the headphone out into a mono cab? Or do you have to split the stero cable at the Cabs and run it into two separate mono cab inputs?
I disagree, mono send / stereo return fx-loop is not dumb at all when you actually think about it. -> You split the signal with the first stereo fx-pedal in your fx-loop anyway. So you put your mono Drive/Boost/Comp/Filter pedals in front of the amp and your stereo (or mono) Modulation/Delay/Reverb pedals in the loop, it's all perfect.
Hi, I've had the preamp for a few months and am having trouble getting it to work. It's just too quiet, no matter how I turn the rear line level knob. I intended to use it for recording - i.e. without an amplifier, connected directly to the interface (or rather patchbay). I use a SansAmp for bass in the same way, which works perfectly. Can you think of where the problem may be - or rather what I'm doing wrong? Alex
Also Trs bzw Stereo Kabel?
Hey thanks for your detailed video. I've been playing my e530 for fifteen years in my room :) I run it into a Tech21 power engine. I could run it direct into a standard cab using the integrated 1,5 watts power amp ??? I thought it would never be loud enough even at bedroom room level ! What tubes do you use ? I switched to JJ EC803 which are way too gainy. I like the grain but I can't even play on the high gain channel...
I'm just using the stock tubes and they do me well. And it's easily loud enough for me at bedroom level. Probably not enough for a rehearsal or live situation but that's what a power amp is for.
@@Filterbear I really like the ENGL 810, because it's only 1 rack unit. There are also 1 unit power amps from Mesa Boogie and Marshall. Honestly, I don't think the power amp makes too much of a difference. I would say, just get whatever fits your budget and space.
i would suggest you to have a try swapping the tubes (V1 & V2) i was very disappointed at first sight when i got it ...kinda mushy IMO with the stock ECC83... ive put a TAD Premium 7025S Mulard Reissue in V1 N a Genalex Gold Lion 12Ax7 in V2 ........it's freaking good right now !!!!!!!!! Tons of headroom !!!!!!!! ............you can crank it up a lil' bit as well with a Tube Driver to get more juice............. Buy a good Noise Gate as well or insert a multiFX in the FX loop using the 4CM it really blows
I think I'm gonna hook up my Engl E530 tonight ! I have the bad habit of buying too much second hand gear and not playing them enough. I bought my Engl this summer and haven't used it much coz I'm hooked on playing with my Rocktron Chameleon. Have you ever tried this one ? it's apples and oranges but it's also very nice. Great video btw !

I have a Marshall Valvestate power amp for this reason.
Don't forget the preamp too!!!!!! You could do a full NOS retube by dealing coke!!! Coke!!!!!
I find yout lack of releases disturbing!! WE NEED MORE CONTENT!
I need more content from this guy!
I hear that this guy has some stuff planned.

Thats what I touhgt too. Sound is not focused, almost falling apart. Hard to cut though in a mix with that one.
