  • What's up, y'all?!? 🤠 It's your favorite gal, Liberty Belle, and HOOOO-WEEEE let me tell you, I just had one wild ride of a reaction video to Hank Williams Jr.'s iconic "A Country Boy Can Survive"!! 🔥
I've been meanin' to experience this CLASSIC track for a while now, but I'll be honest, I was a little nervous. As a city slicker, I knew this song would be droppin' some straight TRUTH BOMBS about real country values like self-reliance, rugged individualism, and not bein' a gosh-darned snowflake! 💥😂 I just wasn't sure if my pampered mind could handle that much REAL TALK all at once, you feel me?
Well, I finally put on my big girl panties and hit that play button...and from the VERY FIRST TWANG, I could feel my entire worldview startin' to shake like a dog passin' a peach pit, y'all! 🌰🐕 Those openin' guitar licks were like the Rebel yell before the ONSLAUGHT that was about to hit me! I grabbed the edges of my chair to brace myself as Bocephus' beautiful southern vocals came throwin' haymakers:
"Ooooookayyyyy, the huh huh huh Mmm mmm mmm media oh oh oh all with their oh oh I know I'm not crazy oh oh I know there's not no need to fe-e-e-ar! Th-th-the oh no, the what? The ohhhh NOOOO, the what is going on here?! Uh oh uh oh uh oh the TRUTH IS COMIN' IN HOT!!"
FOLKS, I AIN'T EVEN GONNA LIE...I think a little part of me started weepin' tears of JOY the second those gloriously HONEST lyrics came on droppin' truth like scripture!! 😭🙌🏻 My city-slickin' sensibilities didn't stand a CHANCE against Bocephus' righteous, salt-of-the-earth WISDOM!
The man was just getting REVVED UP too:
"Hoo hoo hoo! The whoa whoa, th-the TRUTH is comin' in drivin' a big ol' MONSTER TRUCK over all y'all's fragile egos! Honkhonkhonk! Watch out y'all, TRUCKIN' through with the HARD FACTS! Ooh ooh oooh! The what the WHAT? Huh huh huh! Th-th-the REAL WORLD don't care 'bout your coddled lifestyle!"
At this point, I'll be real....I was sweatin' bullets! 😓 Could I even SURVIVE this level of PURE COUNTRY GRIT?!? Before I could catch my breath though, Hank brought in the CHORUS for the KNOCK-OUT:
"I'll TELL ya buddyrowl, you gon' LEARN some'nTODAY!! You gotta know how to surviiiiiiIIIIIVE!! We're GONNA survive out here in the REAL WORLD!! Gonna show ya how to surviiiiiiIIIIIVE!! 'Cause a COUNTRY BOY can SURVIVEEEEEE!!!! YEEE-HAWWWWW!!!"
HOLY 💥SWEET💥MOTHER💥OF💥PEARL💥!!!! Did...did anyone get the license plate on that TRUTH TRUCK that just ran over my naive mindset?!? 🤯 I was NOT prepared for the level of GRIT that Bocephus was bringin'!! One second I was a delicate flower, and the next I was a straight-up ROOTIN' TOOTIN' TOUGH COOKIE!!! 🤠
I'm talkin' I was HOOTin' and HOLLERin' and ready to get DIRTY like a REAL country woman from that point on, folks!! 😤 Because there was no denyin' it - after that hard-chargin' chorus, my sheltered ways were OBLITERATED. Smashed to TEENY TINY PIECES by the MASSIVE MONSTER TRUCK tires of Hank's STRAIGHT SHOOTIN' HONEST TRUTHS!!
From there, the man just FLEXED with some of the most POWERFUL DOWN-HOME WISDOM this side of the Mississippi:
    "Y'knowwhyWE'LLmakeIt? BecuzsweDON'TcomplainWHENthingGEThard!!"
    rips mean harmonica solo
    "YEEEOOOOOweneverSHRINKfrom GRIT 'ngainhardwork!!"
I could have SWOONED, y'all!! 😩🥰 Every redneck-readied word was like Hank was toughening up my coddled spirit with some LIFE-GIVING REALNESS!! By the time that blood-pumpin' anthem reached its climax, I was a straight-up WELL-SEASONED, HARD-WORKIN', NO-NONSENSE GRITTY GURL!!
    "You gotta knowhowtasurVIIIIIVE!! Ain'tgonnaletnosidetrackkeepyoudown!!"
    💪😤 "You gotta knowhowtasurVIIIIVE!! NObackin'downfromCHALLENGE!!"
    "Ain't gonerunwhenyaseeHARDWORKcallin'CAUSEACOUNTRYBOYCAN....SURVIIIIIIIIIIIVEEEEEEEE!!!!!!"
I'll tell you what, when those final chords hit...my HEAD done EXPLODED into a FULL-ON MUSHROOM CLOUD of GRIT AND PERSEVERANCE!!! 💥🧠🔥 Every weak link, every pathetic excuse, every gosh-darned LACK OF DETERMINATION was cauterized outta me by Hank's pure COUNTRY TOUGH LOVE, leaving me HARDENED AND SELF-RELIANT!!
I was ROAD-TOUGHENED, CALLOUSED, WEATHERED - ALL THE DANG ATTRIBUTES OF A SURVIVOR!! And I can't WAIT for y'all to witness this ULTIMATE METAMORPHOSIS from delicate petal to HARD-CORE GRITTY SUNFLOWER for yourselves! 😆🌻 If you wanna see a true TEST OF SPIRIT comin' from the ICONIC SINGIN' MOUTH of a COUNTRY LEGEND, then slap yer MAMA cause this here Hank Williams BANGER is a MUST-SEE!!
Git you some, partners - YEEHAWWWW!!! 🤠

Most of us country boys are raised and molded around this song. Fishing, hunting, farming etc.... "Yes ma'am and Yes sir" is a way of life in Tennessee. We take care of our own and always open the door for a woman. Country boys are tougher than shoe leather.

Growing up in a largely rural area where it's just like this song. It was my high school's unofficial theme song. In the parking lot, every other pick-up truck had a gun rack with at least one gun and the first day of deer hunting was an accepted excuse. Hank, Jr.'s daddy was Hank Williams, Sr. one of the greatest country music singer/songwriters and icon of all time.

His dad is the most influential figure in the genre. Which is saying something, considering how short his career was. He died in 1953 at the age of 29, when Hank Jr was 3 years old.
Hank Williams Sr.'s music is featured in a lot of movies, like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption. His music is even featured in the huge game title called The Last of Us.
Hank Williams Sr was like Elvis before Elvis. Not in style, but in superstar gravitas and charisma. There's only a couple of raw video performances of him that exist.

On August 8, 1975, Williams was nearly killed while mountain climbing in southwestern Montana. While climbing Ajax Peak on the continental divide (Idaho border) west of Jackson, the snow beneath Williams collapsed and he fell almost 500 feet (150 m) onto rock, causing multiple severe skull and facial fractures.
His face struck a boulder on the way down, fracturing his skull in a number of places. His nose, teeth and jaw were broken to pieces, his eye was hanging out of the socket, and a fracture in his skull had even left his brain exposed.
The first two people Hank Jr. saw when he woke in the hospital was none other than his godmother, June Carter Cash and her husband Johnny Cash.
Hank Jr. would go on to endure nine more surgeries to repair the damage to his head and face. We’re talking plates, skin grafts, the whole nine yards.
To cover the scars and permanent disfiguration, Hank grew out his beard, started wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat… and Hank Williams Jr.’s signature look was born.

I was also in the National Guard and i was about a foot or so from the stage. Both Alabama and Hank Williams Jr would go on to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

There's an 8 minute compilation of all of his TV performances that you can watch on YT, labeled "Hank Williams-Kate Smith Shows March & April 1952" uploaded by Earl Martin.
He wrote all of the songs he performed. June Carter (Johnny Cash's future wife) is featured in there as she introduces Hank Sr and her sister Anita Carter doing a duet. Those performances were about 8 & 9 months before he unexpectedly passed.. He passed on the night of New Years 1953 at the age of 29, while riding to a show in the back of his Cadillac.

You may have heard Hank Jr. without realizing it, although it has been a minute since he did the intro. "ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?" 😂😂😂 That's a "cover" of his tune "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight." Later in his career, he bemoaned the fact that "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down." 😂😂😂
I'm not a country music fan by any stretch, but grew up with my folks listening to his daddy (Hank Sr.), so I've been familiar with the works of these two gentlemen my whole life. I actually saw Hank Jr. in 1991. Great entertainer. Played every instrument that was on that stage that night. Knew how to write a good country song, too. Check out "Family Tradition." It's about the old-timers that knew his daddy and Jr's contemporaries giving him shit because his music don't sound like daddy's, among other things.
Nothing but respect for Jr. as a musician.

I just discovered you young lady. It's so good to see the younger generation discovering the music we grew up with. This is the unofficial anthem of small town America. Yes we still grow gardens, fish, hunt and can and freeze our own food. The market is a place to get what we or our neighbors don't already have on hand. A lot of us are retired and left the city for a quiet life of community and basic values, which were being lost in the city. Many of us were raised by parents of what's known as the greatest generation that grew up during the great depression and world war two. We still refer too others as Sir and Ma'am because that's how we were raised. We watch out for and help each other. The scariest thing someone can say to us is, I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I was raised just north of Denver Colorado. But my family owned property in the Rocky Mountains. So we spent our summers up there. So I relate to this song and he gave us a shout out too. We started out roughing it up there, then got trailers. But us kids still loved tenting it down in the aspen groves. We built a big house for everybody.. we had it framed and were working as a family dry walling and building the rest together. Until my grandmother got cancer for the third time. My uncle had to move for his job and after she died they sold the property. Our family all went our own ways. This happened when I was 13. But all I ever knew until then was the summers up there.

Hank senior was so popular that when he died people wanted Jr. To take his father's place and sing his old songs that everyone loved. But Jr. knew he had to make it on his own. It kind of addresses this on his song Family Tradition. Give that song a listen. I think you will like it. And check out Hank Williams Sr. Truly an icon of early country music.

Hank Williams Jr has so many great songs we could list. But here's two that I wish reactors would finally do of his:
    • Blues Man
    • All in Alabama
Some background about Hank Jr that will help you understand the second song: He was raised in the music business to be the spitting image of his father. And once he got into adulthood, he kinda started having an identity crisis and wanted to start going his own way. But he was highly criticized for it, and called crazy.
During that time, he went hunting for big ram sheep in Montana. He was hiking on top of a mountain with a friend and his young boy. At which point the ground gave way and Hank tumbled down the mountain 500ft and landed face first into a boulder. It crushed his face, knocked out his eye, and exposed his brain. The little boy had to stay there and talk to him and keep him conscious while his friend went and got help, which came hours later. Hank awoke a few days later in the hospital with Johnny and June Cash at his bedside.
From that point on, Hank Jr has always worn a beard, sunglasses, and a hat to cover up his scars.. There is an old interview where be removes his sunglasses to show the scar around his eye. It's noticeable, but doesn't look too bad.

The whole dynamic of Hank Williams Sr. and Hank Williams Jr. is very interesting. Senior was, despite his early death, a huge influence on country music. He has the "twangy" sound a lot of people associate with country music. Junior was only about three when his daddy died. He showed talent young and was raised and pushed to sound just like his dad.
But like a lot of young people, he rebelled. He became part of what became known as "outlaw country" because it was in your face, and incorporated a lot of outside influences like rock and blues. He got a LOT of pushback from people in the industry that thought he was rejecting his dad's legacy.
In addition to his musical influence, Senior was known for his issues with substance abuse. He had severe scoliosis and chronic pain. His alcohol and painkiller use contributed to his death at the age of 29. Junior had his own problems with substances. He also had a climbing accident that nearly killed him. The injuries to his face are why you always see him with a beard, hat, and sunglasses.
Two songs that confront the expectations that the music industry had for him, his struggle to be his own man in the shadow of his father, and his struggle with the same demons are "Family Tradition" and "The Conversation" (with Waylon Jennings, another "outlaw"). These hit themes a lot of people relate to. True, most of us don't have a country music legend as a parent, but most of us struggle with the expectations our family and friends have for us, our own dreams, and a lot of time a family history of mental health or addiction problems that we have to work through.
I think you'll like them. It helps to know the history to understand the songs, though.
Even in his "party" song, "All My Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight", at the end of the music video, a ghostly Cadillac flies through the air and Junior salutes it - it is a tribute to the father he doesn't remember, a legendary party animal in his own right.

Hank Williams Sr is considered by most to be the father of Country music. He was for sure it's first huge star. Bocephus (Hank Jr.) is 100% American Country bad ass. He's bigger than life itself. Lost his dad as just a kid, grew under the shadow of his dad. Fought his own demons, was almost killed in the mountains and lost his daughter a few years ago. The man is still standin' and loved and respected by anything country and alot beyond . Dudes a legend.

There’s a song by Aaron Lewis that pays homage to this song, called “Country Boy”. The live studio version features legendary country artists George Jones and Charlie Daniels. I saw him in concert and he was so good!

Hank Sr invented country music. The first music superstar. He may have not been the best, but he would do till they got here. He died when Hank Jr was still a toddler. Do yourself a favor and watch A Tear In My Beer.

You want to know what true woods/ wilderness really looks like then come here.
Americans walk around with cowboy hats on and they have never seen a cow in their life.

Research the Hank Williams name to take a deep dive into one of the greatest family legacies in Country music. Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, June Carter Cash (a rising star in Country music before she married Johnny), Red Solvine (probably miss-spelled the name), Dolly Parton, Loreta Lynn, and many others led the rise of Country Music. May I suggest you check out Chapel Heart, Gregin Wilson, and many others in the modern version of Country Music. God bless and be safe out there.
