The Official Video for this song is so great because of the imagery that accompanies it, not to mention that Hank Jr is singing alone with his guitar from a barge in the middle of what looks like the Mississippi River. The man fell off of a mountain and lived to tell the story! "If you picture Hank Williams Jr. there’s a good chance that image includes a beard and shades. That’s fair. After all, he has rocked that look for over forty years. In a way, it’s his trademark. However, it wasn’t just a fashion decision. He changed his appearance to cover up the scars he earned when he fell off of Ajax Peak in Montana back in 1975. On August 8, 1975, Bocephus was hiking on Ajax Peak in Beaverhead County, Montana. As the country icon hiked along the mountain, the snow beneath him gave way. Hank Jr. fell nearly five hundred feet. The fall caused massive injuries to his head and face. In fact, the fall fractured Hank Jr.’s skull in several places. They were almost certain that he would die. He didn’t though. He did, however, spend two years recovering from his injuries as well as the surgeries he endured to repair them."
When he came to a couple days later, 2 people were by his bed. His Godmother June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash. Contrary to popular belief, Johnny was not his Godfather as he and June didn't get married til Hank was 19 years old. But they were very close
Yeah I missed the “just a woman and the kids and the dog and me.” Or close enough. It’s like an English major came around and made red marks all over the lyrics. Studio is better for sure.
one of a million versions of this performance. Hank has changed it up a lot over the years. He changes the words a bit, the tempo, throws some rock into it. Every version is great.
My friends from Northern Maine amaze and impress me. City people can call them names or look down on them but the truth is we should look up to someone who can kick ass, fix almost anything, feed themselves, and will be the first ones to help out when the bleep hits the fan. Great song, and a great reaction.
It's such a failure of our education system to "educate" us, take 12 or more years of our lives and still have us come out of school not knowing how to even grow a single tomato. Well let's be real, the government doesn't want us to know these things, they need us dependent on them.. That's why my advice is taking every shop class you can while in school. You'll learn more useful things there than any other class room.
I saw hank jr. About 7 months ago, his voice is just as powerful as it ever was, I think he's around 73 or 74 now and still has it. Damn good songer/songwriter
Hey Britt, remember Gretchen Wilson's Red Neck Woman song you reacted to a while back? You said you didn't know who Bocephus was. This is the one and only Bocephus.
Hey Britt. Hank has got great pipes. He also plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano, steel guitar and maybe one or two more. He was the CMA entertainer of the year 3 times in a row too. One word of caution with Hank and a few others, to get a first impression of his songs, watch the official video even if you can't show us. Hank has a habit of changing the words and melody of his songs when he performs live. So you might want to hear it once as he wrote it lol. You probably heard him for years and didn't even know it, before Carrie Underwood took it over Hank was (for years) the guy who sang the intro for Monday Night Football. "Are you ready for some football???? Pig in the ground beer on ice, all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight.
This is probably the earliest live performance I've ever seen of this song. Hank Jr was my dad's favorite musician when I was growing up, so naturally he became mine too. When I got to high school my taste moved toward rock, rap, and hip hop but I will still throw on some Hank Jr every once in a while and love it just as much. His concerts were legendary too. He won the Entertainer of the Year award 5 times in a row and had a concert that was only the 3rd pay-per-view event in history to be cleared in 100% of markets.
Bocephus is my all time favorite singer. He plays 9 different instruments, and always puts on an awesome concert. Absolutely amazing artist. Also known for are you ready for some football theme that used to play before Monday night football
We used to have a big catfish and frog leg fry. We had a big bonfire and played music in the barn. Hank Jr was one of my husband’s favorites and he always sang it with gusto! 👵🏼☮️💜 Namaste 🙏🏼
Love this song , and what it stands for! Country born and raised. Lived on a farm my entire life and proud of it. I’m so glad my momma and daddy raised us with Christian values and taught us the ways of our ancestors. We can grow, forage, hunt, fish and fix almost anything. We respect our elders and will gladly lend a hand whenever possible. Great reaction Brit!✌🏻
I've never heard this version of this song, but knowing you I'm not surprised you chose this one! It is WAY different than what most of us know, the studio version has way more...ummm...feel to it.
I actually live not far from him at the Tenn/Ala border! My community only has around 400 folks & my cabin is right on the Tenn River where we fish a lot, hunt, trap & I have my own deer/hog processing during hunting season! I also have a 4 acre garden I tend plus laying chickens, goats, turkeys, ducks & one huge ass Rhode Island Red rooster! I was raised during the '60, '70s & '80s in a small town in north Georgia {home of the Dukes of Hazzard} then moved up this way 25 yrs ago & live just like the song says & love it - PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS & GO DAWGS ✌💖☮
When I was in high-school this song was equivalent to a Bible verse. We were prepared, or thought we were, and were daring the Soviets to just bring it on. We all has "Russia Sux" bumper stickers on our jacked up 4x4s...lol
He started out imitating the legend Hank Williams, sounded just like him, then he become of age an took charge of becoming himself. In 1975 he fell 440ft down a cliff fracturing many bones(several skull fractures) and basically removed his face. But he SURVIVED
Britt absolutely great video,I like you comments on the video, Hank Williams Jr Country boy's can survive is one of my favorite songs,Ty Britt Good Bless you 🙏🇱🇷
Hank Jr is on my Mount Rushmore of favorite artists. Along with his father Hank Sr, George Jones, and Alan Jackson. All have huge catalogs and were super influential in the genre.
its not saying "come at me bro" he saying he can survive if shit goes down and surviving like farming, fishing, and hunting and if it comes to it killing a man.
I know that you prefer live versions but you’re not getting the best version in most cases. Live versions are usually not the ones that their fans are accustomed to, the artist tends to change the live versions. Imho. Love your reactions though, just wish they were of the better version… 👍
Agreed, I know its sometimes easier to keep a live version from getting blocked and you do get to see how great they can be live sometimes but not all lives are of their best.
I prefer to SEE a singer sing, and see what they're capable of. I've heard a lot of studio songs from people who can't really sing well. Justin Bieber, for example.
I heard this song a million times. I saw the studio version of this song in a bunch of reactions, I never saw this one before, thank you for using it, it's a nice change. I think this song better explains the song by Jason Aldean why people shouldn't try their shenanigans in a small town.
I think the thing I like most about this song is how each version he sings is slightly different, from tempo, to adding boys and girls, or changing up the city locations he calls out. Sets a high bar for all them country folk.
This is the first time seeing a live version of this song. it's a lot more laid-back and smooth. He also changed the words a bit as well. On the official video version, it has a harder beat and more soulful and bluesie.
My husband and I both are country folk. So are our children and grandchildren. No gender roles, we all hunt, fish, forage and garden. My Mom out hunted my Dad most years. We will survive for sure. Wouldn't live any other way.
If you go to see somebody live you already know the song So him changing the way it's he bellows allowed parts and changing some the lyrics is why I wish you would have done the studio version
This is a very soft version of this song to me... I like it when he punches it.. Blows me away... From a country girl who loves me some Hank Jr. Truly the more I listen to this rendition.. I want the other versions... Hank will take prisoners when he belts it out..
I find this reaction amazing in so many ways. I mean I've never agreed with his politics or anything I loved his dad so much. And Hank the third is actually pretty damn amazing. But the thing is, Hank Williams jr. Or, Bocephus as he is often called, put up some good music, and a lot of it is the fabric of my younger days. It's just woven in there. And I love it. I really do love it. And I'd like to believe he's probably a really good person. I do not agree with a lot of the stuff he stands for but man I'm a musician, and I have to say there's a special place in my heart for his stuff.
Hank Jr is probably the best musician in country music, Hank can play every instrument and play them well and has a strong voice H😮e can also play country ,Blues ,Cajun and southern rock. Hank is great live he can do it all.
Checkout family tradition, which refers to his father's Fame and early death and it was on every jukebox forever in any bar or pool room, and it basically still gets played a lot in those situations even now with digital jukeboxes. For example, he's got a lot better stuff than this, family tradition speaks to all of that, but I would also say, in extreme classic in one that just rings so hard for certain situations, is, Whiskey Bent and Hellbound. And once again this kind of refers back to the power of his father's songs and performances, how much emotion he could create in an audience. On an almost Vaudeville level, he's got what I still think is a real banger, and it's called Attitude Adjustment. And it was a minor hit but it was still hit, and it's a fan favorite. I really don't want to spoil it because it goes through a number of changes throughout the song, even though it's in this old-school format. And it turns out to actually be a funny song, even it does have some dark overtones here and there.
Not a country music fan at all, but I saw Jr. live in '93 and that muthafukka is a straight-up entertainer. He played every single instrument on that stage that night, very well, I may add.
Very true. My dad was a hillbilly Tennessee boy. Taught me and my brothers how to survive. And this song all true. One of the great storytellers is hank jr
Friday is coming up, it'd be a great time to check out "All My Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight". He later turned it into the Monday Night Football theme song. Hank Jr.'s personal story is the stuff of a movie, but he didn't want to do country the way the corporations do it. If you can grow food or kill it and skin it, you can survive. Real talk!
I used to have a camouflage hat when I was 8 years old with "country boy can survive" on it. My Dad was an old coal miner from Colorado and we all seen some tough days!!! Stay strong y'all and Keep Moving Forward!!!
Yes, he can also sound just like his dad. He started down the road of life like Hank Sr but a fall off the side of a mountain provided a come to Jesus moment. He made his own name in the country music world. One of my favorite singers. Try the song Dinosaur. He has lots of greats to pick from.
Back in the day, Hank could really rock it out in concert. He knows how to entertain and loves the experience. He sounds a lot like is father but, in my opinion, he has a fuller and stronger voice. George Hamilton starred in a movie about Hank Williams, Sr, and a 15-year-old Hank, Jr, sang the vocals. He's had an interesting life and a movie was made about him, too.
Wonderful reaction, you always have lovely insights. I hope you will also watch the official video, there are a few words that would change from audience to audience, so there are a few minor differences in the official.
What he is saying country folk doesn't bring a knife to a gun fight. You will hear Him and other artists sing about Bocephus that is his nickname given to him by his Father Hank Williams Sr.
Hank Jr is an AVID outdoorsman, and I do mean AVID. So much so that he plans his tour schedule around the different hunting seasons in different areas.
I grew up a heavy metal kid, but I grew up in Kentucky. I remember popping bands like AC/DC, Van Halen, the Scorpions, etc out of the cassette deck and popping this tape in. Trivia fact: he lost his face in a rock climbing fall, which is why you’ll never see him without big, tinted glasses and that beard-and he wore that beard before beards were cool again. Then when I moved to Texas, I added Chris Ledoux to the tape case. “Copenhagen, you are a friend of mine…” 🎼🎶🎶🎶
In 89 I think I was in a bar watching NRBQ (Britt you'd like them very similar to Little Feat) Hank Jr showed up because several members of NRBQ toured with him. He was plastered and threw up twice in the bar. So while Iive singing I have seen him throw up.
As others mentioned, this is a slower, later version of the song. But amazingly, he still Nailed that last note! (It's even better in the original.) Also, dunno if they mentioned it, but this is the son of "royalty!" His daddy was the Legendary (singer-songwriter) Hank Williams, Sr.! Who died early, and who only knew Jr. as a little boy. And "Bocephus" was the nickname his dad had for him. (btw, I finally just looked up what was the origin or reason behind the nickname Bocephus... and naturally, its the most ridiculous and Country thing you could imagine...😂 🤦♀️ But I wont spoil the story here.) Blessings to the family and baby.
This the first time I have watched BrittReacts. You are enjoyable to listen to. Sounds like you do some reading and can do a review of the meaning of a song. You are a very charming lady, keep up the good work.
Britt just know I love hank Jr saw him in concert he was my late husband's IDOL. But just know this girl also LOVES lil wayne. Keeping it all in my music duffel bag Lol
You reacted to an Aaron Lewis song "Country Boy", and there's a line that says "Cuz Hank taught me just how to stay alive. You'll never catch me out the house without my 9 or 45". This song is what he's referencing. 🙂
His father was a country music legend who died of a broken heart. Check out his dad's signature song I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry. Elvis also covered it live in his iconic Aloha From Hawaii concert.
With Hank Jr., the best version are always the studio versions. Love me some Hank, but his live versions are rarely sober enough to be as good as the studio versions. Put it this way, I went to a Jr. concert back in the day, it wasn't bad, but you could tell he wasn't all there. My dad asked me about the concert, I said it wasn't bad, he then proceeds to explain that the concert he had gone to 20 years earlier, Hank was high on something and probably drunk too, described how the concert went and sure enough it was exactly what I experienced. Don't get me wrong, still love his music, but I'll stick to the studio versions. 🙂
Totally agree with you. I grew up a big Bocephus fan and was excited when I got to see him live in concert - I'm being charitable when I say it wasn't very good. He was definitely drunk (plus he might have been using pain pills - I'm sure part of the reason for his heavy drinking isn't just hereditary but dealing with the pain from that horrible accident so many years before). You also have to separate Hank's politics too from his music (although I doubt "If the South Would have Won" would get made today - and comparing Obama to Hitler wasn't the smartest thing he could have said.)
Hank's father is an icon of Country Music. He died when Jr. was just a small child. When he was young, everyone wanted to hear him sing his father's songs, but he had his own path to trod, and he balked at that. He is prolific songwriter, instrumentalist and singer. I think he's even better than his father. He can play just about any instrument. I saw him in concert twice, back in the 80s.
The city slicker didn't even make it through this song... 🤣Never really thought about it that way and I've been thinking about this song for decades... 🤣🤣🤣
The Official Video for this song is so great because of the imagery that accompanies it, not to mention that Hank Jr is singing alone with his guitar from a barge in the middle of what looks like the Mississippi River. All true, not hype.
When he came to a couple days later, 2 people were by his bed. His Godmother June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash. Contrary to popular belief, Johnny was not his Godfather as he and June didn't get married til Hank was 19 years old. But they were very close
That's the one you need to watch/listen to
This version is alright but I pefer the studio version😊

@@lb1984 The “Hank Live album” version was pretty dern good also!

Yeah you need the studio version
I hate it when they change the lyrics. 😢
one of a million versions of this performance. Hank has changed it up a lot over the years. He changes the words a bit, the tempo, throws some rock into it. Every version is great.
Hank Williams Jr., aka Bocephus is one of the most talented performers ever!! Could listen to him all day. 😊

Having skills like gardening, canning, knitting, sewing, etc. make me feel more secure. I am so thankful for my grandmas and what they taught me.
You should be. I wish I was raised around these skills. They'll be useful till we're extinct ❤

Hank ruled the 80s! We went out to the woods, gathered the trucks around, had a bonfire and drank our beer and whiskey to his music! I miss it!
There isn't a country song more country than that song. One of my favorites.
We used to have a big catfish and frog leg fry. We had a big bonfire and played music in the barn. Hank Jr was one of my husband’s favorites and he always sang it with gusto! 👵🏼☮️💜 Namaste 🙏🏼
Namaste ❤🌛🌕🌜❤💐
If you have not already. You should check out Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr “The Conversation”. It’s a song about Hank’s father, Hank Williams.

The studio version, he shows way more of his vocal's. Concerts they add on to some songs for solos.
(It's even better in the original.)
Also, dunno if they mentioned it, but this is the son of "royalty!"
His daddy was the Legendary (singer-songwriter) Hank Williams, Sr.! Who died early, and who only knew Jr. as a little boy. And "Bocephus" was the nickname his dad had for him.
(btw, I finally just looked up what was the origin or reason behind the nickname Bocephus... and naturally, its the most ridiculous and Country thing you could imagine...😂 🤦♀️ But I wont spoil the story here.)
Blessings to the family and baby.
This performance is a lot more mellow than the studio recording.. And bit more mellow than his live performance of it on David Letterman.
This is Bocephus, one of the names Gretchen Wilson, used in her song That you review not long ago
This the first time I have watched BrittReacts. You are enjoyable to listen to. Sounds like you do some reading and can do a review of the meaning of a song.
You are a very charming lady, keep up the good work.
When you and your daddy both are legends I guess you get to deliver the song in a nonchalant way! Lol have a blessed day!
Britt just know I love hank Jr saw him in concert he was my late husband's IDOL. But just know this girl also LOVES lil wayne. Keeping it all in my music duffel bag
Lol
You reacted to an Aaron Lewis song "Country Boy", and there's a line that says "Cuz Hank taught me just how to stay alive. You'll never catch me out the house without my 9 or 45". This song is what he's referencing. 🙂
True story about his friend in NYC
Look it up.
Great video Britt!
I live the life and we love our lives and this country our mommas and God.
You got a good version. He took his time and you can judge him by vocal without studio edits.
Bocephus is the best!! Him and kid rock talk truth about all us country folk!! Such a great reaction from you!!
It was written in the late 1970s, very similar to Today’s Sorry state of affairs. So it’s very timely.
You must hear his daughter Holly Williams. Song The Highway and Waiting on June
We seem to mostly agree on the studio version.its faster and i am feeliin his passion on the other version.still an awesome freakin song!!
You need to listen to the studio versions instead of these live versions...the studio versions are alot better imo.
Brilliant comments
We still live that way til this Day! #Appalachia
❤U Brit ! This song is a southern man's anthem .
Ok Britney! You have to listen to him sing, Queen of My Heart! It will get you!😮
Prophetess..lay your hands on us..reach to teach 🙌
Yes watch/ review the original
True words 😊
You said it right. You can call me what you want, but don't call me when the sh!t hits the fan. Your on your own.
It's interesting to see how he's changed the lyrics over the years.
His father was a country music legend who died of a broken heart. Check out his dad's signature song I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry. Elvis also covered it live in his iconic Aloha From Hawaii concert.
Broken heart? Thought it was the drugs and booze. I'm So Lonesome ... is my favorite. Lost Highway is another gem.
@@DenariusHaveNarius It's been said he died of a broken heart after performing the song I'm So Lonesome.
@@mikem957 Maybe so. A damned shame. The great songs he could have written...
You have to listen to the original version. It’s incredible!
The Official video of this song is soooo much better than live performance. keep up the great work
Hank's father is an icon of Country Music.
Here's couple of songs that are great of his, "Blues Man" a ballad and "Man to Man"' more rockin'.
I got you girl was raised on a farm if the zombies come you are covered 😂 And loved the Lil Wayne reference 🙌
We do know how to do it all out here in the sticks. Proud of it.
The city slicker didn't even make it through this song... 🤣Never really thought about it that way and I've been thinking about this song for decades... 🤣🤣🤣
