The problem with all these instrumental arrangements is that parts wrote for the human voice, (the most versatile "instrument", especially when we are talking singers of Peter Gabriel's caliber) are very difficult to recreate on a mechanical sound wave generator.
It's interesting, but as is so often the case with things like this, it's more about what isn't there (ie the original song) than what is. I gave it a try, but it's not for me!

Trespasser string instruments like violin probably have the most available expression, barring electric instruments.
