It is very interesting for me coming back to Genesis after 30 years away from it. I lost interest in the band a few years after Gabriel and Genesis parted ways, although I do love the albums they put together right up to and including And Then They Were Three. The undeniable highlight of their writing, for me, was Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, which I regard as a masterpiece by any standard.
So what did I do in the interim? Well, Genesis and some of the other musicians around their circles (Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth and a few others) made me want to study music seriously. I put my entire life’s effort and soul into doing just that, and I graduated with degrees from three very prestigious music schools in London and New York.
I have loved the music of Genesis since I was a teenager, and I am no causal consumer of their music. Coming back to it now, I find that I still love their writing just as much as I did back then.
Listening to many hours of interviews with the members of Genesis lately, it seems clear that they regard themselves as song writers first and performers secondarily. Tony Banks in particular mentions several times during various interviews that he never had any particular desire to be on stage to perform his own music; the writing was the important aspect of his musicianship. The other core Genesis members seem to share Tony Banks’ attitude.
Along comes a professional concert pianist to play these marvellous compositions by some of the most gifted song writers in the history of rock music. For those perhaps not too familiar with professional classical music training, the technique of a pro concert pianist might seem overwhelming or excessive. But as any professional pianist would attest to, I am sure, playing Genesis is no match in complexity to playing, say, Rachmaninov, Chopin or Bach.
This is not some guy showing off: compared to the heavy weight rep that this pianist also plays, he probably learned this Genesis medley relatively easily.
I feel fairly sure that Tony Banks would feel proud to have his music played by such an accomplished instrumentalist. I can’t argue with him. I think the pieces stand up to many interpretations, including, of course, the original performances by the writers themselves. But I must chuckle when I read some of the comments below suggesting that the pianist here is trying to show off.
I am reminded that rock music of my youth was, surprisingly, one of the most conservative and reactionary of art forms, where audiences wanted note-for-note reproduction live as they had come to expect from the recordings. How silly is that?! Accept we must that a solo piano performance does not have the weight of a rock band behind it and therefore must try to create excitement by other means.
Wonderful performance! Different, yes, but wonderful!

At the time I thought rock and classical were enjoining in a beautiful union. But it sadly didn’t last long. The younger working class generation were too angry for that, and so turned to punk instead. However, I have noticed an awful lot of young UA-cam reactors enjoying this music again. And I’m heartened by that. Music that extends beyond 3 minutes and takes you on an odyssey of escapism is simply magical. And Genesis, Yes, and Floyd were the best of the best at doing that.

Only a great artist can "isolate" and present so vividly the classical side of the Genesis...A very tastefull choice of pieces and a very high performance... Many thanks !!!!!!!!!!
