Simon you're so generous with your detectors, your assistance, your sharing of sites, sharing of finds and recording other people's finds. Thanks for the videos.
What fun to see Nicola metal detecting. Her excitement was contagious! The horse shoe was a fantastic find!! My favorite of the day! Can't wait to hear what the museum has to say! Love the Tudor button as well!
I've watched this particular video three or four time over the past year, love it! The horse shoe is incredible! As an equestrian, I cringe at the crudeness and the size of the holes, however; such genius a thousand years ago boggles the mind! Much love from the US! Stay safe, stay well!
Thank you, I doubt I can achieve all that, especially in less then 60 days, but it is goal of mine to do what you guys do. I belong to a metal detecting club and am thrilled when I find a coin from the 19th century, you two are out there regularly finding objects four to five hundred years old and comment: “That’s nice” I would be so thrilled to find something that old I think head would explode. For now, I’ll have to live vicariously through you two, please keep up the good videos.
We very are lucky to live where we do, I suppose we do get complacent. But we always appreciate the finds and we often leave things behind that we already have examples off. Happy hunting!!!!
I was thinking that horse shoe must be rather old because it was so crudely made, but I would never have guessed it was Saxon. Amazing find! Always interesting to see what you uncover.
I can see how it was made too, the wavy lines being caused when the shoe was pierced with a "hot punch" which also countersunk the nail holes . it would be interesting to know the chemical composition of the shoe to see if it was made in the UK or came from Saxony.
What a great adventure this was! You found your 1st coin with a metal detector! Woo Hoo! My 1st silver coin with my detector was an 1898 Barber quarter. I'll never forget the thrill of it! That's one you'll never forget...And that 1000 year old horse shoe is incredible!! Good stuff you two! Metal detecting Mudlarkers, awesome!
I have an ancestral sword from the American Revolution, and my brother has our great grandfathers Civil War sword. That s about as old as things get over on this side of the pond ...outside of Jamestown and native arrow heads and shards. How cool you find Roman artifacts and earlier stuff.
I knew the horseshoe was very old as soon as I saw it. It's a fantastic find Si. The horseshoe and Nicola's echinoid are my favourite finds from this mudlark.
Great horseshoe. What a find. You're very patient Si. But I would have been running back too, just to see the possible Wonderful find. Great fun watching. Thanks 🥂
Musket balls usually have a tiny nipple area where they are snipped from where they were poured into the molds. It can be cut very close but usually there's a bit of a sign left where that area was.
Thank you for sharing. Such interesting finds. It’s amazing how you can contribute to Your countries historical values. I actually lived in Feltwell England from 1975 to 1979. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍🏽👍🏽
Wow-what a find. A Saxon horseshoe is awesome. You both found somethings. That Tudor button is very unusual for us to see but not by Tudors. Ha!🤣God Bless.
What a great days finds, thank you for recording it and letting us see the history found in the mud. To find and touch something like that horse shoe is amazing!
What a lovely time l've had with you Simon and Nicola. Oh, oh, oh, you just don't know how much l love being with you for these finds - l am really there with you. You should see me in my loungeroom. Guys, l want coins, coins, coins, mainly Roman and early English. Sadly, l can't do much of this in rivers and creeks. The snakes (deadly) are far too prevalent, but l might find a group that does something similar in a safe place. I want to be in London - with you. You are my kind of people, Wow. Catch you again. Love you both. CHEERS! Aussie Janice
The squares are the outside of the shoe and the holes are the inside. Each horseshoe is made by hand and the squares allow the excess nailhead to lie flush and not irritate the horses or mules feet
Oh, congratulations Nicola for your first find with a metal detector. I have often thought of purchasing one and doing the beaches here. These videos are great now that l have found you. We, in Melbourne Australia are in lockdown and have been for ages. Nicola, if l found any ceramic pipes if l were there, l'd give them all to you. Love you guys, Aussie Janice.
Si-finds I thought so. The same can be found here in Germany. In the mud of the woods where the Varus battle was. Metal relics of the Romans. Well preserved.
I've always wondered what happens when you record things with the museum of London. Could you record your experience and maybe interview the person you talk to? It would be neat to hear about the weirdest things they've been presented with, the oldest, the new things that are often mistaken for old, etc. Just a thought! I love the vids with you and Nicola together, they're lots of fun.
toxigenic Good idea, I'll ask Stuart the London Finds Liaison Officer and see what he says! Maybe I can get inside the inner vaults of the museum too...?
Hahaha, great video Simon, thank you for sharing! That horse shoe was epic! Love the time lapsed shot of the boats with the skyline in the back. Really great shots throughout. Keep up the excellent work!
Great finds, especially the horse shoe.....wow !!!! You two work so well together 🤗 I fossil hunt in Lyme Regis and found a sea urchin like yours, my fav find !
I've watched this video several times. I love it. Just love your comments are so funny, you get on like houses on fire ... That horse shoe Is a mega find. !
What a fun video Si and Nic! But I have to correct you on that horse shoe. It is really from a set of dark ages dentures,,,,,,well maybe it is. Thanks Kindly for more Larking Discoveries from your Mudloving Brother in Pennsylvania. Love, Light, Peace and Lucky Larking! DaveyJo
Something you may wish to know about horse shoes, those old hand made shoes had holes that started off small and through use it would flatten the shoes a bit, making the nail holes bigger and they would renail the shoes to use again. This means they would use a nail with a bigger head on the bottom. If they wanted a shoe with grip then they may use a nail with a "cleat" which would make the holes open up with wear and time. Also very old shoes were traditionally were made much wider then we use today for protection of the horses sole. The metal used was not as high grade as today with wear and tear would get them whompy. The reason the outside of the shoe was waved as when the blacksmith opened up the nail holes it would cause the metal to expand on the outside. Hand made horse shoes are a trade that hasn't changed much In thousands of years except the quality of metal.
Round musket balls will be from prior to the adoption of the Minié ball by the British military with the 1853 Enfield rifled-musket. Love the horse or mule shoe, great find.
Absolutely wonderful video! I love the horse shoe and how old it is, it's amazing! I love Nicola, she one of my top five mudlarker, along with you! Lots of love and all the best to you both, happy hunting and thank you so much for sharing with us!
Mary Helen Hi Mary, so kind of you to say. Glad you enjoy the videos, who else made your top 5 out of interest? I'd love to see their vids if I haven't already done so. Thanks. Si
Great video , you found some nice bits, appreciate you adding extra info at the end, its strange to see Nicola with a detector though ! I haven't been out detecting for a couple of years and miss it so much ! :)
Congrats on the horseshoe find! Nicola's vids led me to you and I have truly been enjoying your adventures. -- From the middle of the U.S. to you, be safe... and lucky!
Hi mate, the horseshoe is a cracking find, I was only reading the article you showed the other week about the Saxon and Norman horseshoes, I am sure I found half of one when I first started detecting, and tossed it in the rubbish....lol.....!!!!! take care GL & HH Tom

Absolutely love these mud lark finds, the horseshoe is amazing and it such a history lesson and a peek into the past x

I was thinking that horse shoe must be rather old because it was so crudely made, but I would never have guessed it was Saxon. Amazing find! Always interesting to see what you uncover.
M D Cheers dude. I'm amazed every time I go out at the things we find. Thanks for watching!
I can see how it was made too, the wavy lines being caused when the shoe was pierced with a "hot punch" which also countersunk the nail holes . it would be interesting to know the chemical composition of the shoe to see if it was made in the UK or came from Saxony.
That horseshoe and the history you've supplied is a remarkable find! Great video. Thanks.

Well done video, the horseshoe was definitely a worthy find and starts the imagination as to its origin.
It's nice to take a Butcher's hook along the Thames. Great vibe guys 👌🏼
Loved the horseshoe.
Wow!!! Love how you do the research! 1000yrs!!? That's incredible! Thank you for sharing your adventures on the foreshore and with Nicola!😀
Micheal Hodge Thanks Micheal!
Loved the video. What a great horse shoe. I think the jaw that Nic found was a cat.
I think the incisors are too long and near together for a cat. (Mine just bit me)!
I got addicted to your videos, Merci , thank you.
I love any horse shoe at the best of times, but that one sure is a lucky horse shoe indeed, beautiful!
I loved the collaboration! Each going to each other to see the treasures. What a great day for you both!

Fabulous video Simon. I love it! That horse shoe is absolutely awesome! And, what a fantastic seal shot too.
nicola white mudlark - Tideline Art Thanks Nic! Let's do it again soon!
Nicola
Nicola White you should mudlark an area first then go back ove it with a detector and see what else you find. Would be a good video.
The squares are the outside of the shoe and the holes are the inside. Each horseshoe is made by hand and the squares allow the excess nailhead to lie flush and not irritate the horses or mules feet
@Bonnie Nutter Thanks for watching!
Awesome horse shoe. I imagine the wavy part comes from the metal expanding as a square rod was forced through to make the hole. Wonderful find!
Jim Andrews Thanks Andrew that's a great theory!!!
Oh, congratulations Nicola for your first find with a metal detector. I have often thought of purchasing one and doing the beaches here. These videos are great now that l have found you. We, in Melbourne Australia are in lockdown and have been for ages.

WAAA!!! Im gobsmacked about the Saxon horse shoe it's absolutely stunning. What a find! And I love the sea urchin for some strange reason 😁
Thanks Simon!
very fascinating the old horseshoe. And it's still so well preserved after so many centuries!
KarstenOnAir Thanks. Yes, it's that anaerobic mud that preserves things really well. Just like Nic's copper penny, no air can get to it in that mud...
Si-finds I thought so. The same can be found here in Germany. In the mud of the woods where the Varus battle was. Metal relics of the Romans. Well preserved.
Electrolysis will stop the decomposition of iron finds, nice relaxing, informative, and ancient horse shoe is stunningly beautiful

I had no idea that seals lived in England, let alone in the Thames! Wonderful video! Hello Simon and Nicola!!
Hi Liz! Yes but rarely in the Thames, but it's getting cleaner so more wildlife can thrive now
seals are almost everywhere in the worlds oceans
Well done. Saxon. Wow 😮
Round musket balls will be from prior to the adoption of the Minié ball by the British military with the 1853 Enfield rifled-musket.

CHESHIRE METAL DETECTING Thanks Tom! We all live and learn, they are pretty rare things. Thanks for watching pal! Si
Many of the small ponies used " down pit " in the mines of Wales or Wigan etc etc , wore similar shoes .
I love the horse shoe. I have seen videos where others found them and cast them away misidentifying them.
Cool finds guys, I especially like the echinoid! HH from Vermont USA
You two seem to have the seal of approval.
Wonderful history you’ve got over there. (Maybe the knob is a finial)
Excellent!
Love you two, not many with similar hobbies like you guys. You should be a couple 😍
