Frost River was starting by people who worked at Duluth Pack, both in Duluth, Minnesota. Soft sided packs, like the Frost Rivers and Duluth Packs were designed for canoeing/portaging. Soft sided packs fit into a canoe better than any framed pack. Framed packs also will grab the gunwale of the canoe too much when pulling it from a canoe. Framed packs are better for any backpacking. Get Frost River soft sided packs for canoeing/portaging, like what they were designed to do.
The other upside to the Frost River canvas packs is that they handle being around camp fires a bit better than some of the synthetic packs. nice look. I have the full size Isle Royale and I'm looking at packs for my gal who is petite and not really athletic. I'd love to get her a Frost River pack but I think that I'll get her a Fjallraven, the hip belt and taking weight off her shoulders might help her out.
I just got the full size. It's very big. I go back and forth because it is nice to be able to fit everything. Used the swingtop rubbermaid trash can with cutting about 2 inches off the top, to give the bag structure. I'm not sure if I could really manage all the weight if I really loaded the Isle Royale up.. The Isle Royale waist belt is worthless and while the straps have nice padding, I find the bit leather welts and rivets to be a problem and they dig into my bag.. It's a beautiful bag though, just not the easiest to use. Not exactly cheap either.

In hindsight I wish I had gotten the full size Isle Royale. That way all my stuff would fit inside of it during a canoe trip.
Adam Risius That was why I went with the full sized pack over the Jr. I like to get my ground cover tarp and wool blanket inside the pack at times.
