Finally the real way to make scones, I have watched 6 videos before I came to yours and you do them the way I was taught over 50 years ago. You can't beat the true old recipes. Thank you.

I see she didn't sieve the flour into the bowl or at least not on camera, are you meant to sieve it or does it not really matter?

    • @jlife9092
      @jlife9092 Рік тому +2

@@Zoe-dr5ps You sieve the dry ingredients mainly if you live in an area of high humidity where powdery stuff tends to clump. All that stuff about 'aerating' or promote 'better mixing' through sieving is just negligible and probably invented by wannabe online bakers to sound clever.

I just made a fresh batch of scones using this recipe and it turned out simply amazing. I used butter instead of margarine and all purpose flour with baking powder to improvise for the self-raising flour which I didn't have at home and it still came out Just perfect. Great job @ Kind Kyttocks. Thanks for sharing.

You get a better rise if you place the scones together so they're just touching, rather than with spaces in between (it forces them to rise UP rather than up and out, and it results in soft sides rather than a crust all over).

Thank you so much, on my 1st try mine turned out perfect. I used one regular butter stick which in the US is about 113 g. Just some advise for those having trouble, if you prefer regular flour just weigh out 500 g or 1 lb then add 2 1/2 tsp of baking powder and a pinch of salt then you have self raising flour. if you are using frozen butter sticks like me just leave it near the stove to soften. lastly you can use regular sugar. Hope this helps someone out there. Again thank you "Learntobake".

@MrLightPanda Try to get some spreadable butter - it's usually mixed with some buttermilk so it's softer. If you want to use just butter then make sure it is left out the fridge for a while so it is soft. You're problem is probably that the butter is too cold and so is not mixing well. Check you've got the weights correct too. Keep trying - i've been making scones every day for 25 years and they still go wrong sometimes!

1st. Put 1 lb (500g) of self raising flour in a big bowl.
    2nd. Add 2oz (50g) of caster sugar.
3rd Add 4oz (110g) of margarine and mix with (clean) finger tips until you have a light (full of air) breadcrumb texture. Wash your hands and get a wooden spoon.
4th Make a well in the middle (indentation) and add 1/2 pint (300ml) of milk and slowly fold in the milk from outside in until you have a ball of dough.
5th. lightly flour the surface and the dough and softly form the dough with you hands until you have the right thickness 2 inches (5cm) and cut out with floured cutter.
6th. Mix 1 egg with 2 table spoons of milk and brush the scones.
7th. Put in a pre-heated oven, middle shelf at 400 F/200°C or gas mark 6 for 12 minutes.

Benjamin Andrews Thk you I'll try it out they taste lovely with Butter in the pastry as Margarine is made of unhealthy Transfat, it's hardened Palmoil the industry said falsely that butter isn't healthy (but it isn't true just to sell their bad Margarine they made this up, the famous bakery shops in Germany, Demehl in Vienna who makes great cakes & bread all use butter for certain stuff u can use organic coconut oil! If you heat 🌻oil above 120 o cels u have Transfat
I ate lovely scones in Bath in UK w. a walzer, was great they eat th. with butter jam or cream, cheddar 🧀 is also nice. ☺

@miyou800 I would not recommend using plain flour. The scones will not rise as much and may be a bit raw in the middle. You could use all purpose flour and add a bit of baking powder - which is what self raising flour is. Experimentation is the only way to find out. good luck.

Make sure you use good quality self raising flour and not just plain. Don't squash the dough down too much before cutting. Ensure your sugar is caster and not granulated. Don't mix the dough too long - try to leave as much air as possible. Let me know if any of this helps. Do try again - scones take a bit of practise but it's worth the effort. Q

@@ichthusthree I think it's similar to granulated sugar but finer. It's pretty common in the UK.

Thank you!!! I made them and they are perfect. I didn’t have a cutter so I used a knife to cut into squares👌🏽

Hi it is 2020 - a couple of weeks after COVID-19 lockdown measures were reduced, and now the 2nd wave of infections is appearing in various countries. So what to do but stay home - again - and learn to bake the perfect scones. What a WONDERFUL, FUN, RELAXING video to learn with especially now. Bet you never knew back in 2010 that 10 years later your video would still be going so strong and when we all need it the most. Saying THANK YOU does not put my gratitude into words. You're the best :)

Brilliant video and great recipe. Been rubbish at making scones but this video made it look achievable.ive used it 4 or 5 times already and had amazing results. Everyone who has tried them have loved them. Thanks for sharing this. I think I've recommended this video to so many people in the last few weeks.
