    I grew up on a South African farm, we had a few Meerkat families living on the farm, the home family was only about 20 meters from the back door, They would come right up to the back door and helped themselves to the dog bicuits we left out for the Boerboel and BullMastiff dogs would always be on the back of my dad's pickup truck just for incase my dad was going to jump in and leave them behind. The baby Meerkats (very small, they kind of look like tiny rats or mice) would come into the kitchen and take up residence behind the old wood stove we had in the back kitchen. The mothers would come back after a day of foraging or a battle/war they had on with other colonies/families of meerkats who all wanted the best spot, close to the back door for food and milk. So they became very tamed and ruled over all the Cats and Dogs (They are a lot smarter than Dogs or Kats) What made them the Generals of the Household animal army was that they were in a cahoots with the other smarter "thing" Crows. That was a combination that no Dog, Kat or even my younger brother could outsmart. The Crow would keep a lookout while the Meerkats ransacked the Kitchen, and because they always wanted to carry off more than they could carry, they left a breadcrumb trail for the Crow to vacuum up.

    Just to clarify--a small tank is not appropriate for an axolotl (yes, I own one). The axolotl is a high-bioload pet who requires a *minimum* tank size of twenty gallons for one.

      As a proud owner of my 3 year old common snapper who started in a 75 gal tank, 2nd tank was 180 gal fiberglass tank 5ft long & currently lives in a 400 gallon 8ft long tank. 20gals is a very small tank 😂
      Jokes aside, the actual recommendation for a single adult Axolotl is the Largest Small tank & the Smallest Medium tank.
      15gal long - Largest Small tank
      20gal long - Smallest Medium tank
      Multiple sites & breeders agree.

      Axolotls also require cool water/unheated aquariums (mid 60s to low 70s). People living in warmer climates often use “aquarium water coolers” to maintain optimal temps. They are the larval/“tadpole” phase of the Tiger Salamander. Herpetologists speculate that pollutants in the air or on the land of their native habitat may cause them to halt their metamorphosis into their completely terrestrial adult form. They are sensitive to water perimeters (ph, temp, etc) and should only be housed with other similarly-sized axolotls. Aggressive fish or aquatic turtles can damage their delicate, external gills which often proves fatal. They are shy animals and enjoy a well planted aquarium with a cave large enough to hide in.

    The exotic pet trade has been booming and results in so many of these beautiful animals suffering and dying, and huge numbers of them reduced in the wild. I'm really shocked it's being encouraged on here. Many people get these animals and they end up suffering and dying as well because the owner hasn't done enough research or simply doesnt provide it. I'll never understand people who get animals like baby monkeys, lemurs and any primate. Imagine what the trauma poor baby's mother went through having her baby taken, as well as the baby. My heart breaks for them both. A baby primate's best parent would be the mother that gave birth to her, not someone wanting to put it in diapers and dlothes for social media. These animals are very social and thrive and are always happiest with their own kind. I would love to have several of these animals listed too, but because I care for them so much I want them in the wild where they are free, thrive and have access to proper food and environment.
    That said, anyone who does have reptiles and various exotics who has done their research, providing adequate space and proper care is at least better. I've seen some that look happy, yet ownership applies to only a few species. That said, a python, iguana, cuckatoo or any other exotic's preferred habitat is not your couch, cage or house. If you have done your research, or have common sense you already know that.
    I've seen so many animals on vet shows miserable and/or dying because the owner has no clue what they're doing, even simple but vital things like temperatures, proper diet and basic sunshine. Like a 6 month old baby monkey the owner refused to keep quarantined until she built immunity. She didn't let others touch her, but had her among people like a side show. Being a primate she got herpes from someone, and this little baby suffered terribly unable to eat with sores in her mouth, swollen eyes, and uncontrollable shaking for weeks until she was euthanized. People really should just leave them where they belong in their natural habitats and leave them be.

If I get sick, you need to recognize that poor is getting sick. There’s so much more do you have a movie exotic pet. When I decided to have chickens, it took months before I got my first chick. I had to build the proper enclosure, a pin, where they would be safe from predators. Learn about nutrition, and the different stages of growth. Yes, I was very successful, and I learned a lot that was not in Books and other learn from other people. The problem is you have to know what questions to ask.

    I totally disagree with this about hermit crabs. Do NOT paint their shells! And most keepers do not provide proper husbandry. They are much harder to keep than most people think! Axolotls need cold water which can be difficult to maintain in a home environment, but sure are cute. Degus are chewers! I have kept them in the past. One of the snakes you showed when talking about ball pythons was a rainbow boa which is not a beginner snake! I adore my trantulas and adults do not need to be fed that often! Macaws are a handful indeed! Beardies need large enclosures are a poop machines. Leopard geckos are much easier to keep than beardies. Leos need at least a twenty gallon. Very few people catch food poisoning from reptile pets NO monkeys do not make good pets for almost anyone. I only know one marmoset that is being taken properly cared for.

    It really sickens me that people take in these exotic animals and then when they get tired of them, they let them loose. All you have to do is look at Florida in the python’s situation exotic animals need to be in their natural habitat. Most humans are not responsible enough to take care of them.

    • @wraith1320
      @wraith1320 4 місяці тому

      Sadly, I’ve found that most humans are not responsible enough to take care of ANY animal… Look no further for evidence than one of the most horrific invasive species crises in history: Australia’s feral cat population, which threatens dozens of native species with extinction. There are no native felines in Australia. The animals there are not equipped to contend with a predator as versatile, relentless, and efficient as the domestic cat. Quite frankly, bringing them into the country was a terrible idea. Still, no one questioned it… because they’re /domestic/ cats. Believe me, the level of destruction Australia is facing because of invasive cats is far worse than what Florida is facing with pythons…
      So the question is… how was it any more morally or ethically sound for people in Australia to keep domestic cats than for people in the U.S. to keep pythons? Should we only allow native species as pets? Should we require that all pets be contained by fences, tethers, cages, etc.? I don’t have an answer to that. I just know that calling out exotic pets as destructive or dangerous, while ignoring equal or greater threats posed by common, domesticated pets is a double standard-one that often makes people overlook their responsibility to keep ANY pet from becoming a menace to others, or to the environment as a whole.

      That’s kind of what appealed to me… I like small pets, but a lifespan of 2-5 years would just break my heart. 🥺 Hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice… all way too sad to lose after such a short time. I think those are all great pets, but I don’t know how owners can stand losing them over and over… 😔

    Growing up, I often helped my dad take care of Oscar, his pet tarantula.
    I’m okay with spiders, but some do give me the willies. Oscar was a cool pet. He liked getting brushed with his small toothbrush, and getting to race around on the dining room table in the evenings. He didn’t mind me stroking him ether. He had such a soft coat.

You can not leave unsupervised as you will have many thing chewed up. You also have to be weary of what they chew as it will damage their teeth and require surgery.

    For busy people a desert or arid tarantula species is really perfect. They can go weeks or even months without eating (I've heard stories of 2 years between meals). And no need to maintain humidity. You can take business trips and they wouldn't miss a thing.

      The narrator is mistaken, ALL tarantulas possess venom to subdue prey. It’s true the majority of tarantulas sold as pets don’t have dangerous bites (unless one is allergic to bee/wasp stings.) There are a few kept as pets by advanced hobbyists whose venom is thought to be medically significant but -with only a couple exceptions most of these species aren’t aggressive towards humans. Old World tarantula species do have the ability to send a cloud of sharp hair flying at their aggressor by rubbing their back legs together. Individual hairs are barbed and very irritating to eyes & nose/respiratory tract.

    • @xekis
      @xekis 8 місяців тому

      @@davidvento5481 Correct, all tarantulas are venomous. It's how they eat.
      Any tarantulas that can kick hairs only come from the New World (Western hemisphere), and they would kick them off their butts (opistosoma) not their legs.
      There are a few New World genera that do not possess urticating hairs so instead they have increased speed and venom potency to compensate just as all of their Old World cousins do.

The number of animals in this video that end up dumped because owners can't care for them properly or just got "bored" is astonishing.
