@Snapple127 well it depends on demand and supply, lack of legal supply when there is a high demand is where you will find high amounts of illegal supply, such as narcotics for example. add to the fact many of the regions where these animals are native tend to be in countries with poor economies, poaching is a very tempting means to put food on the table with how lucrative it can be. also demand for fur coats made of rare exotics is much smaller then the exotic pet trade, it does actually encourage more poaching.

Don't know if "showing off" to your friends is a great reason to buy one of these guys...it's a real problem. Every animal deserves to live it's best life.
And the illegal wildlife trade is a fucking disaster. The journey for an animal in the global exotic pet trade is long, painful and often deadly. Either poached from the wild or bred in captivity on a farm, exotic pets are often shipped huge distances before reaching their final destination and can be deprived adequate shelter, food, room to roam, and environment control to keep their body at the temperature it needs to be. For example, as many as up to 66% of poached African grey parrots die before starting their life as a pet. It's one of the main reasons why some species are endangered along loss of habitat. Lastly, they can bring diseases (such as covid!) along with them.
I had some hermit crabs when I was younger and I took care of them greatly so they lived a long time. That’s what made it sad when I saw a pile of broken claws, eyestalks, and legs. We buried it and it was very sad but the next day we looked in the enclosure and saw all the crabs still there. The crab had actually changed shells and just took the opportunity to shed its claws, legs, and eyestalks.
A lot of these animals are nocturnal - which means having them out in the day time damages their eyes. And monkeys are not suitable pets. They are highly social and need their own kind for company. Disappointing to see a list like this :(
Right! My son wanted sugar gliders and I made him find out all he could about them. We decided against getting them because they are nocturnal. My son already has sleeping problems.
I actually rescue sugar gliders a few days ago a rescued a big female, the person who owned her had a small cage and only fed her pellets when they need a special honey mix, fresh fruits and veggies every night and a bird cage she was the only sugar glider and the owner didn't pay much attention to her and being all alone they can become depressed and kill themselves this is why when I first got mine I got two now I have around 20 plus I've already rescued 11 dogs and rehomed them to amazing people and I miss them all. :)
there are rescues for exotics as well, and a lot of them make better pets for people that work long hours and live in an apartment. you should look into a variety of pets before getting one, not just dogs and cats, or you will most likely add to the numbers of them dropped off at rescues. people need to stop looking for dogs first when it comes to pets, they will most likely get ones that need a full backyard and at least 12 hours of socialization, while they live in a small apartment and have a 9-5 job. there are ways to rescue exotic animals as well, and in my opinion dogs and cats should not be considered the ideal pet.
@@jimbeam2299 It should concern anyone. People buy pets without researching them first. I once bought my kid a hermit crab from a mall kiosk because the guy said all they needed was the cages he sold, a little bit of sand, and a couple of extra shells. After bringing it home I read about them and found out that they needed WAY more space, and things like sticks and such to climb, several inches of sand, which would barely fit in the cage they came in, this calcium enriched sand-like stuff, food other than the "hermit crab food" he sold, little heaters you keep under the sand, a rather high level of humidity which means you need a hygrometer and water mister, but you have to be careful not to mist most of what is in the aquarium because it can get moldy. They also are very curious and need a variety of oddities, which you need to switch out regularly. They live in large groups and actually have best friends. If you get several, which you must do if you care about them at all, you will find that certain ones hang out with each other more than others, and some don't get along. You also need to know that when they molt, which they do once or twice a year, they get under the sand without their shells and don't move at all for days, appearing dead. If you touch or move them during this time it can, and often does, kill them. When they finish molting they need specifically sized shells, not even a little bit to large, so for every hermit crab you need about three extra shells that are almost, but not quite, identically sized, bigger than the ones they are in. I had several and got them a 120 gallon aquarium that was far more wide than tall. Once you get all these things they aren't exactly high-maintenance, but they are quite expensive when you first get them. Did anyone else here even know all of that?

Crested geckos aren’t good for kids. They live up to 30 years old, and most kids get bored after awhile. They also require a LOT of care. Sugar gliders, like rats, mice, etc. need a companion, or they’ll get lonely. They also require a LOT OF CARE. These pets on the list are not made for your kids enjoyment, they are alive, and need GOOD CARE.
Crested Geckos are one of the easiest reptiles to own - they eat a fruit powder you mix with water and a weekly cricket or two, they don't need expensive lights - a smallish enclosure 18 x 18 x 24 is good. They do need to be misted daily but that is very simple. They are readily available captive bred.
Kitty Kat yes but is a kid going to be able to make sure there’s no mold, make the food, switch it out every 24 hours, mist it if the humidity is low, make sure the heat isn’t too high, and make sure it’s healthy? Sugar glider, Sure! we can only tame rodents so much anyway. Hamster, chinchilla, guinea pig. Sure. But a serval?!? Or any other wild cat? Doesn’t matter what size. Downvoted. While giving qualified care to exotic animals that have been injured or rescued from illegal trafficking very much has its place, encouraging the general public to seek out these species just because they are cute is selfish and irresponsible. It increases demand for said trafficking by hunters and sellers who are unlikely to vet buyers for proper knowledge of the species, appropriate habitat, etc. Go visit these remarkable creatures in a reputable zoo or wildlife sanctuary, and on your way home stop by one of the many animal shelters housing thousands of cute and loving already-domesticated dogs and cats waiting to meet you.
Sorry but most of these animals on the list are all captive bred and have been taken care of for many years and we have almost perfected the husbandry on them. Also these are pretty common pets and are perfectly legal in lots of places
@@chucklesthefireguy5356 Why? It's not like you can release them into the wild after it has been your pet. If "you want it all and you want it now" go do Drugs or something that affects only your own life. Leave the animals out of it.
Fennec foxes, while adorable and incredibly social creatures, are difficult to domesticate even with the best training. In their natural habitat they dig holes in sand in the African deserts, and they will try to dig surfaces in your house effectively ruining upholstery. Always do research before purchasing a pet. Fetishizing exotic animals takes away from their chances at happiness- who gains from this relationship? You or the animal? Are they happier with you than their natural habitat? Dogs and cats have been with humans for thousands of years. The same cannot be said for most animals.
Right. Look up saveafox rescue. Some of their videos explain all why her house is totally bare, how difficult the fox can be to live with, why do you need to be honest with your expectations. Foxes are adorable, but no, they never fully domesticate or potty train.
Not to mention -- and I am an animal care specialist at a nature center -- fennec foxes stink to high heaven. Nomatter what you do, what you spray, how many times you clean. Their cuteness is only exceeded by their absolutely rank odor. DON'T get a fennec! Leave them in the wild!
I think guinea pigs are an underrated exotic animal. My former husband got me my first because I missed my dog in college, and they are kind of like having a tiny, veggie eating dog personality wise.
Guinea pigs require a lot of care that people don't realize, though. They're incredibly social, they need at least 7.5 square feet of flat space, they need fresh veggies, and they also, being rodents, need a lot of stuff to chew on. With all of these demands (combined with their adorableness) makes a lot of their owners wind up getting overwhelmed and sending their impulse-bought pets to rescues, which then have to put up with all the maintenance and expenses of these pets. I think that the world would be better if nobody owned ANY exotic animals, safe for reputable zoos and aquariums that were working to reintroduce the species into the wild.
@@dinosaur1583 "exotic pet" is a kind of broad term. A lot of people just consider anything other than a dog or cat an exotic pet, but for other people "exotic" means extremely unusual. It gets really tricky when you start considering domestic animals. Pigs and reindeer would be pretty unusual pets, but they're both domesticated and used on farms, so are they technically exotic? And rats and mice. They live pretty much everywhere, so does that make them not exotic? Guinea pigs are one of the less-exotic pets, but that's just because they're much more common than things like tarsiers or bears or squids or something. This "lack of exotic-ness" makes them really good pets, though, as the more common and domesticated an animal is, the easier they are to keep and live with. It's all really relative.
@@haley8385 That's incorrect. Cats choose to live among humans and no one can say about dogs because it was over 10,000 years ago. You are dead wrong. None of these animals should be kept as pets.
I agree. In fact, the thing is that these animals AREN'T domesticated...it took humans 10,000 years to domesticate dogs. I'm not even sure if the process of domestication is ethical at this point in time, as you mentioned.
@@haley8385 For reference of what Bambina L is talking about: 'The process of dog domestication began when a population of wolves moved to the outskirts of hunter-gatherer camps to scavenge for leftovers. Those wolves that were tamer and less aggressive would have been more successful at this. While the humans did not initially gain any kind of benefit from this process, over time they would have developed some kind of symbiotic relationship with these animals, eventually evolving into the dogs we see today' - BBC This implies that the wolves willingly followed humans, and weren't forced in to captivity. The wolves benefited from us, not the other way around. I'm only stating this because of your point about domestication. It was a willing process as everyone above has stated.
There are exotic animals that we can actually own but shouldn’t. We definitely don’t know how they are brought to us. Very few animals are brought to us without severe consequences. If you want to earn a certain kind of pet really look into it really be prepared. For a lot of them; Their habitats are destroyed by us humans and inhumanely trafficked across countries to us just to come along and buy for pets. A lot of these exotic creatures are practically extinct thanks to humans traffic in them and destroying their homes.
Most of the information on sugar gliders isn't stated. As an owner of TWO of these babies I can say. They need to be in pairs because they are very social and can over groom themselves if kept alone, he should know this if he knows that they are a part of the marsupial family and did that much research. Also, they are not good with other pets, especially cats as seen in the video, because cats saliva is toxic to them and when in their blood stream is the equivalent to poison and will kill them. Also, they are really expensive just like close to all of these animals on this list, and need vet visits which for me cost $120 for a single sugar glider visit just one not including the other one you have to bring in, because you need to have two, and their diet is complex with them being omnivores and needing vitamins (not reptile, but sugar glider made ones). So yeah, just because you watch this video and think you can buy any of these animals that are called exotic, do some research and don't make an impulse buy, if you don't know what you are doing you are just gonna end up hurting these animals.

Its, is already the possessive.

That would be a great experience. But I knew it from childhood.
A lot of these animals are nocturnal - which means having them out in the day time damages their eyes.
And monkeys are not suitable pets. They are highly social and need their own kind for company.
Disappointing to see a list like this :(
@Hi oof
Well people keep hamsters and they too are nocturnal. Sometimes nocturnal pets are great for people who have school or work all day.

there are rescues for exotics as well, and a lot of them make better pets for people that work long hours and live in an apartment. you should look into a variety of pets before getting one, not just dogs and cats, or you will most likely add to the numbers of them dropped off at rescues. people need to stop looking for dogs first when it comes to pets, they will most likely get ones that need a full backyard and at least 12 hours of socialization, while they live in a small apartment and have a 9-5 job.
there are ways to rescue exotic animals as well, and in my opinion dogs and cats should not be considered the ideal pet.

ua-cam.com/video/kMxioALW8aA/v-deo.html
Why would this concern you? 😹
@@jimbeam2299 why wouldnt it? tf

It’s called evolution we did the same thing to dog and cats so in many generations they will be domesticated
Donald Lee Grim
And why not it’s not like it’s hurting the animals
You realize the wild is our natural habitat as well right? Do you suffer sitting in your chair under a roof?
You can’t keep a turtle as a pet. Turtles are attatched to their homes and if you remove them from their homes, they’ll spend the rest of their lives trying to get back to it and will be completely miserable until they get there. Sure it’s legal to have a pet turtle, but it shouldn’t be.
What if you live in the same area that they live in
im confused but what about captive bred?
If it’s captive bred it’s okay, but I agree people shouldn’t take turtles from the wild. But most people are stupid and will do it anyways.
@@brookewestphall exactly and half these idiots that take these cute little babies out of the wild probably don't know anything about the turtle or how big it could get not to mention the possibility of parasites
herrscher of sweets just go and visit it sometimes but don’t bring it into your house.
Nothing is cuter than a meowing kitten.
True, but this is UA-cam not reddit lol
Sorry but most of these animals on the list are all captive bred and have been taken care of for many years and we have almost perfected the husbandry on them.
Also these are pretty common pets and are perfectly legal in lots of places
@@Stpunk17 you mean America? Cause pretty much in the rest of the world, it's forbidden.
captive breeding helps the wild populations.
Some of their videos
explain all why her house is totally bare, how difficult the fox can be to live with, why do you need to be honest with your expectations.
@@maurajmandrano8017 Humans are stinky too but we don't throw them out into the wild.
Just get a ferret if you feel the intense need to project quirkiness and be all unique, just like everyone else.

I would absolutely love to have a Fennec Fox, but I know my apartment would be too small for it to fully enjoy its life. One day.

GUINEA PIGS ARE EXOTIC????? I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT-
@@dinosaur1583 "exotic pet" is a kind of broad term.
@@steveheimlerfanpage they also need a friend. So if you're looking to buy a guinea pig you should get two
@@steveheimlerfanpage Plus they PISS a lot!!! And poop, require cleaning twice a week or your whole house will smell like ammonia
I'm just sad watching this. These are wild animals. Shouldn't be domesticated.
... not all of them.
And FYI, nothing should be domesticated, then, because every dog and cat was once wild long ago.
Bambina L
I never said they should be kept in homes.
@@haley8385 For reference of what Bambina L is talking about:
'The process of dog domestication began when a population of wolves moved to the outskirts of hunter-gatherer camps to scavenge for leftovers.
Those wolves that were tamer and less aggressive would have been more successful at this.
While the humans did not initially gain any kind of benefit from this process, over time they would have developed some kind of symbiotic relationship with these animals, eventually evolving into the dogs we see today'
- BBC
This implies that the wolves willingly followed humans, and weren't forced in to captivity. The wolves benefited from us, not the other way around. I'm only stating this because of your point about domestication. It was a willing process as everyone above has stated.
Me :Being an Australian and wanting a sugar glider and a bird lol
Do like sugar glider? 😇
I'm aware I am researching cages and how to make pouches and I have diet worked out. There are some good videos done by a sugar glider vet on here. So I'll be sugar glider ready in six months once I move and have everything set up.
I wanna get 2 sugar gliders when I move out, and I'm gonna name them Pip and Squeak. If I get them...
@@theodore6253 nice, be ready though they are a lot of work
@@megnemo6403 make sure the vet isnt affiliated with perfect pocket pets. They are a mill breeding company that gives out awful information on them and sometimes get vets to agree through money but the vets arent qualified for it
@Tala Habern Yeah but they are set for problems in their life and, the vet visit can cost $120 for two
The sugar glider information is not accurate at all in this video...
LUCIEN AMOS well because they can’t eat sugary things, they should tell people not the fun facts abt them and the real facts like they need to have a friend (another glider) or they will get depressed and kill them selves also they are nocturnal and need LOTS of attention and plenty of room to play, they also need toys to keep them entertained, and a suitable cage not a bird cage, and more, they should really be telling people these facts so people don’t buy them and are unsuitable owners.
@arctic berries, everything you said is very true. I have 3 sugar gliders that have been living with me for 5 years. Not many people can even handle having them as pets, they're not like cats or dogs where they'll come to you for love and attention, you have to earn their trust, they're known to be animals that get preyed on, so they can get easily scared. But I love my babies, they're the best "pets" I've ever had!
As well as cats are 100% deadly to them. Cat saliva and claws are lethal.
I own 6 gliders.
The only thing this video said that was acruate is they are cute.
