  • Dr. Friedman serves as Clinical Professor of Neurosciences and Pediatrics at University of California San Diego. Her patient, Lillian Rose, was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at 7 years old, and since then has developed an interest in neuroscience. In her talk, Lillian discusses her experience in controlling her tics as well as seeking how to understand it better.
Lillian Rose, 17, was born and raised in San Diego, California. She was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at 7 years old, and since then has developed an interest in neuroscience. She underwent treatment for her Tourette's when she was 15 in a therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Tics, or CBIT. CBIT helped her develop skills to feel more in control of her tics and has given her a more positive outlook on life.
Dr. Friedman serves as Clinical Professor of Neurosciences and Pediatrics at University of California San Diego. Outside of Rady/UCSD, Dr Friedman in partnership with the Del Mar Heights Elementary School, developed the Understanding Differences program to improve understanding of and tolerance toward those with disabilities.

As someone with Tourette’s, this video is quite accurate. I do love that episode of southpark, and agree that as long as people don’t see me AS a joke, it’s fine to laugh sometimes.
For example my three closest buddies that I spend a lot of time with, realized that my ticks could be influenced. One night while watching UA-cam videos together, a character sticks out her tongue and blows a raspberry multiple times throughout the video. Without thinking much of it I quietly mimicked this. Ever observant, my friends also began to mimic the raspberry as the episodes went on until (much to their delight) I’d developed a full new tick which I have to this day several months later.
There was no spite, malice or unkindness here, just good natured fun. In much the same way that we tease one for his shortness, another for his ridiculously thick glasses and another for being so skinny. It takes away the mystery to our different traits and makes us more comfortable around each other.

I have some extremely intense facial tics that often cause me to hurt myself. It really does help me mentally when I see videos like this of others with these same issues getting up in front of large audiences and talking about their issues. I just wish there was an easier way to get past a specific tic as I'm really suffering from this facial scrunching one right now and I don't see it easing up anytime soon :/ thanks again for making videos like this and informing the public why we do these things that most would consider weird.

No one is discussing how bad it is and how horrid it is to suppress tics. It shouldn't be encouraged, why was this whole video about suppressing tics?
The horrible tic attacks that are outcomes of suppressing, are very scary and can be dangerous and harmful. They can last for hours, and be triggered from 'controlling' your tics while you were out shopping, per say.
It's way more freeing, and easier to accept yourself when you do not suppress.

Thankyou! I thought I was the only one who thought so.. this video was soo casual in my opinion. I’m very happy for her that she got into a good school but for me its soo hard to stay in school due to my tics. Its almost impossible and also the way they described to suppress tics when thats exactly the thing we cant do if you have tourettes!! Believe me, I would suppress every tic if I could but when youre alone in your room everything comes out even worse

I wish people would watch this video. Bang on accurate.
It would make life a lot more comfortable if people weren't staring so much.
I want to be able to tic in public without melting from embarrassment.
If only people could just look once or twice instead of side-eyeing me all the time.
Sometimes it feels like I'm being watched when I'm on the bus or train.

I've never been fully diagnosed, but since earlier this year, I took zoloft and it gave me tics. I stopped taking it and I still have the tics. I don't think they'll ever go away, so I've learned to just live with it.

Hey sally, My name is Gage and I also have Tourette's. I'm fortunate enough not to have it as bad as some people, but it can still be extremely stressful. I don't have any vocal tics right now, and my worst motor tic is probably the head jerks or the muscle tensing at the moment. I understand what it's like to be told by family to "just stop it" or "cut it out" and it usually made things worse because you feel like you're just annoying everyone around you and there's nothing you can do about it. As for how to deal with TS, exercise and music are both great ways to alleviate the need to tic because they are both activities that require lots of focus and allow certain parts of the brain to take a break. While those are good for when you have free time, they can't always be implemented into daily activities such as school or a job. I have heard that the behavioral therapy where instead of doing the tic you feel like you have to do, you press your palms together until the need subsides works, but I haven't ever tried it. The only way that I've found to make the tics less persistent is to just stop worrying what others will think of you and stop trying to control them. I've gone through the last three years at college ticing my way through lectures with very little response from others because I don't make a big deal out of them. And on the rare occasion when someone brings it up, I just try to explain to them as best I can what it is and how it's no longer a problem for me, so it shouldn't be a problem for them. I always liked the saying "those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind." Tourettes Syndrome may control my body at times, but it will never again control my emotions. I hope you find this useful. Good luck, and God bless!

There is new evidence in the field of psychology about the incredible neuroplasticity of the brain and they the more you dismiss an urge, they really can go away (Dr Amy Johnson - the little book of big change). This disproves a lot of what she's saying

I can't stand the way the entertainment industry shows Tourette's. It's completely inaccurate and now everybody's misinformed. The yelling obscene language repeatedly is actually called Coprolalia, not Tourette's syndrome.
