8:40 Tip #2: Use anti-seize when reinstalling the blade adapter. It will save you, or someone else a lot of time and effort in the future! Great video Don!
That's a great idea, if you do it right after you unbox the mower...99% of these adapters are never taken off the engine for the life of the mower unfortunately.
As a small engine mechanic of 35 years, see this all the time.Recently had a stubborn adapter I eventually cut a v in it with cutting disk and split it with chisel.Yes tried heat and have all the pullers.Another tip be careful grass can ignite on underside of deck and check gas did not leak out before ignite torches as fumes can ignite.I used an old pair of flame retardent coveralls and wrap around carb and engine if working around torches or welding blanket will do the same.Always have fire extinguisher nearby also.Great tips Donny.
Hi Donyboy, That looks like a Uniweld cutting attachment (I was a welding equipment repair tech in another life time...lol) A tip I picked up when I started out as a Heavy Equipment Repair Tech (fancy title for diesel mechanic I guess): A welder suggested putting a water soaked shop towel around the shaft before welding on or heating bearings etc. The water will evapotate from the towel but it will also keep the heat away from your seals. Just thought I would share with you whatwas shared with me. Cheers from NB
It's often helpful to hit the hex end of the puller screw thread when tight , a few sharp raps then see if you can get another half turn , rinse and repeat , useful if no heat source handy . Also oxy / propane is a cheaper alternative to oxy acetylene , good for heating and cutting steel , not good for silver solder or brazing .
Great video Don! The right tools make the job so much easier!. The "Heat" wrench can be a huge time saver. Thanks for showing both puller techniques as well. Have a great upcoming weekend!
Thanks. The harmonic puller method worked. Used my impact wrench on it. Ended up bending the frame of the puller but it was a cheapo one I had lying around. Will try and straighten it up.
I just had a similar rusted out deck, Mapp gas worked for me getting the adapter off, but I broke all three bolts holding the engine to the deck, despite lots of penetrating oil and heating the bolt heads. 😥 Today I try welding nuts to the broken studs. 😎 I've been eyeing an oxy torch to buy, this video might have pushed me over the edge. Thanks for the video.
Just food for thought you could also wrap a soaking wet rag around the engine out put shaft to keep the oil seal from getting hot while you use heat up the blade adapter
Excellent video, nice to see it's not just i who runs into that kind if trouble, 😆 ONLY thing was when I used the heat it caught the dry grass on fire 🔥 . Good to keep a bucket if water handy. Isn't it gut wrenching to see such a nice mower gone to pieces just because of lack of a little care. I had one in exactly the same condition last month. No need of it, my push mower is 20 yrs old and the deck is as good as new. Have a good wknd
I own oxy/acetylene tanks and gages, haven't used them in about 20 years. I know the tanks have to be exchanged. I use propane gas or it's hotter Cousain map gas whichever is closes to me. Thank you for a wonderful how-to video, God Bless !!!.
I'm on my daughter's UA-cam account. To help keep the puller from walking off the head of the bolt I just put a hose clamp on the end of the puller or the head of the bolt, which ever is bigger. Just make sure part of the hose clamp acts as a lip so the head of the bolt can't go past the hose clamp lip. Or so the puller can't walk past the hose clamp lip.
I used to use 2 torches in mechanical room air handlers to remove large blower wheels. get that hub cherry red. start spinning by hand & off it comes every time !
You want a clean deck as well. Residual grass and weeds can ignite when using a heat source. Not everyone thinks of everything before diving into a job
Liked your video. Always professional. But I watch folks using pullers using a bolt, and it is so much better to use an allen bolt with a pointed puller. Just saying
Just broke a pulley on self-propelled mower I am doing an engine swap on. Using a 2 jaw pulley. I need some torches or MAPP gas at minimum. Propane doesn't get hot enough.
unrelated question. How much clutch drum end play should one expect? I've kept a 32cc craftsman whacker alive for 10 years (on acreage) and just replaced clutch assy & drum. When the drum center screw is tightened I still find just under 1/4" of back and forth play. Is this normal? thanks Donny!
Wait a min🤔Do the threads on the adapter go all the way through where the bolt holds the blade? If so I mean I'd just get a really long bolt with the same thread pitch and call it a day
Donny, I’m in a bit of a pickle. I’m fixing a 2005 Craftsman 55cc Incredi-pull chainsaw 316350840 for a buddy. The oil pump 9228-310208 worm gear is stripped and the housing is cracked at the set screw. I can’t find it anywhere because it’s been discontinued. I’d hate to junk a perfectly running saw over this. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
Good morning Don, I’ve dealt with a few of those stubborn blade adapter removals, can be challenging at times but helps to have the right tools. Any tips for removing engine mounting bolts to the deck. I often can’t get the bolts loose and they want to break easily. Not fun extracting broken bolts from the engine.
I c your puller has a flat surface does that part screw onto the bolt or is it all one piece and if I had to replace the bolt for whatever reason how would you do so with a flat end
Donyboy I have a craftsman push lawnmower I lost my manual and having a very hard time getting a replacement blade adopter every where I go the adopter is too small my mower is 6 years old
It saves your bacon, and you could cook some bacon with it too. I like bacon.😄 Seriously, I'd like to see a video on how you would put a new adapter ON the crankshaft, especially if it's a tight fit and doesn't want to go on with a few light taps. I've put a few onto various mowers by replacing the keys and greasing up the end of shaft if the adapter was stubborn. Then I've had a couple that just didn't want to go on without a few good whacks, but then you run the risk of screwing up the end bearings and seals. Didn't have a torch, but luckily everything went together okay, but it would be interesting to see how YOU would do it. Anyway good vid and much appreciated. 👍
@@donyboy73 Hey Dony. Thanks for personally replying. I'll keep your suggestion in mind if I have a problem putting an adapter on a shaft. Nice of you to take the time. Appreciated.👍
Before I would resort to the torch, I would have given the center bolt of the puller a few moderate hits with a hammer to try and pop it off. Or I would hit it with an impact, which usually pops them off. I don't like fire, dead grass, and the crank seal so close together.
Thanks mate. Will be trying the Map gas torch tomorrow. Swapping a newer Briggs onto an older good quality deck (Masport) but the blade adaptor is different (donor is a different brand)
Go to a welding supply store such as Airgas and check into what is commonly called a “plumbers pack” if all you intend to do is occasionally heat something up. They are small light weight tanks in a carrier you can hand carry anywhere. Before the introduction of PEX tubing for water lines plumbers used them for sweating copper tubing together in a house. The two tanks are for oxygen and acetylene same as shown. Some supply houses are only refilling their own tanks now, so be careful where you buy them.
PENETRATING OIL( LIQUID WRENCH) & REMOVE EVEY SHARPENING & ADD A SAFTEY WIRE/ PIN & LUBE - FOREVER 😀😘 OR - FILL THE GAS TANK & YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN?🤫😭
Too much heat, you ruined the crankshaft seal on the engine. Use less heat and tap the head of the puller bolt with a hammer, might have to do this a couple times. If your not saving the engine, then burn away!!!!!!
Sorry, but I don't think an oxygen and acetylene torch will be any good for *my* bacon. 😟 I like mine crispy, not blackened and carbonized crumbled to ash. 😁 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
8:40 Tip #2: Use anti-seize when reinstalling the blade adapter. It will save you, or someone else a lot of time and effort in the future!
Great video Don!
yes absolutely!
Give the end of the crank shaft a rub with fine sandpaper, same with the inside of the adapter

Nice video. I’ve found an air hammer can sometimes work wonders in situations like this.

If the puller keeps sliding off the bolt, you can slide a piece of pipe over to keep them from slipping off
good tip, thanks!

it's a necessary evil in the shop!
Thanks for post Donyboy .. only guy adventurous and caring to post seizure.
Thanks from Aussi the land down under 😅
Good video on how to use pullers and if needed heat. I usually rap the puller bolt a few times to shock the shaft.
Hey That’s one of the first investment I ever did bought torches in a good welder
Just food for thought you could also wrap a soaking wet rag around the engine out put shaft to keep the oil seal from getting hot while you use heat up the blade adapter

Cheap and effective!

Seems like they stopped making Mapp gas
I have used the knife type bearing pullers on them. I use bolt that threads into pto but put wrench on it so it doesn't turn with puller.
Nicely done. Now you have two good used engines.

I use map gas.. works well too.. did you try it because I see you had some in the background
yes but wasn't hot enough for these!
Exactly what I was looking for!
Are blade holders a standard size can you use them from other makes like honda and brings?
That was real nice how you took that off you got some real good channels I like them all keep them coming Donnie

Could you use a propane torch? If you don’t have access to the others ?

Impact really helps
Thanks again for thinking about us

GOOD VIDEO & KNOWLEDGE! 😀
Opinions, imo your skills are of value and the mark of a true Professional, NOTE will send bigger hat if needed 🤣
Is it possible to weld the shaft? My blade adapter broke and took a chunk out by where the key from the blade adapter goes.

Where can I find the the fireproof sneakers?😃 Great video as always..
I’ve got a ms260 that’s leaking a ton of bar oil under the clutch cover. Any ideas what it could be?
If we do not have a torch, what are some other methods we can use to break them loose?
If ever there was a place on a small engine for the application of antisieze it is the pto end of the crankshaft.
Yep. Nice job

Wouldn’t heating it that much damage the crank seal?
I would use a pull hammer for car bodywork to take off the adapter.
