Liked your video immensely, great point on block of wood! Mine’s a little more complicated because I have a blade stop on mine. Sure would like a video for that type of mower.
Thanks for all your insight, I have worked on all kinds of mowers, and my weed eater (McCulloch mac 60 1980 model) thanks to you it is running strong again. You most likely think why waste your time on that! My father in-law gave it to me in 1985 and he is now gone but this weed trimmer I call Grandpa. I had a problem with the ignition coil and you showed me the business card method and I'm so glad that I checked the spark with a large gap (.060 v8 plug) it jumped it and nice blue spark! gapped and installed the correct spark plug and away we go so thank you for helping me with Grandpa means a lot to me. This means you can teach an old dog new tricks! Your Great!
Dear Chickanic. You have elevated my life by being so informative and helpful . The turning of the deck has saved me a lot of money. Thanks . Trainmoore
When you were talking about when you have to change the blade which way to tilt the lawn mower, the one I come up with is to always point the spark plug up in the air that way the oil won't ever run out the exhaust or into the carburetor and the opposite of the spark plug is always the flat part of the engine or the dipstick usually goes in. Cuz in my younger years of working on small engines I had no idea that the oil would run into the carburetor or out the exhaust so lesson learned. Something else I have always done is put just a little high temperature grease or anti-seize on the end of my finger and smeared it on the inside of the blade adapter that way if you ever have to take it off again it comes off easy. Anyways, I enjoy your videos like always.

I truly love the removing the spark plug completely. That is an amazing idea!!! I'm going to instruct people that way from now on. Thanks for a great safety tip. I have actually had mowers come in that wouldn't run because the key had sheared in the blade adapter. Replace the blade and adapter and everything was right as rain. Gotta love the super light aluminum flywheels on some engines.
@@davidmorse8432 you would have to try pretty hard to get something into the combustion chamber like that. I just pull the wire but for some people I like the idea of telling them to pull the plug then there is no chance of an issue. I would rather risk the tiny chance of something getting into the cylinder that would likely blow through on start up where it's a four stroke not a two stroke, than have someone get injured
Your right ! A friend of my pull only the cable, on an old machine, the cable return to the plug and don't get aware of that, the thing start, loss a finger.
After 30+ years of teaching small engine repair and seeing literally 100’s of mowers, I can definitely say that the #1 place to apply never seize is the pto end of the crankshaft along with the threads on the bolt that holds the blade to the adapter. The acid from the grass along with the moisture are drawn into the hole in the blade adapter by capillary action and in most cases will freeze the blade adapter to the crankshaft so tight that heat from an oxy acetylene torch and a gear puller will be required to remove it. ALWAYS assemble small engine parts with anti seize.
Truck mechanic here : 100% right! Anti seize that stuff! And that 1/2" impact will tear that UP! 3/8ths is the biggest thing you should touch the mower with.
I am "frozen so tight... etc." IF i choose to put the torch to it; please advise on this: do I heat just the adapter, if possible, then try to freeze it, or just wrestle the hot adapter off? Any clue? Why bother? To try to straighten the shaft and to put on a new adapter. Old side of the road B & S. never should have started, but into it so deep now, I'm interested in HOW to get the adapter off.
@@DScottDay I always heated the adapter, but before starting the torch have your puller adjusted to fit from the adapter to whatever you are using in the end of the crankshaft ( bolt, piece of shafting, or etc.). It would help greatly if you center drilled or at least put a dimple in the end of whatever you are using to pull the adapter over as most pullers have some sort of projection to fit in center drilled holes used in production of shaft type items. Whatever you are using remember that the adapter must slide over it. You can assemble this puller setup and put tension on it before starting the torch so you are not fumbling around with hot metal parts, but try and keep heat away from the puller jaws. Use a big torch tip. A small rosebud tip would be ideal. The idea is to get as much heat possible around the hole in the adapter as quickly as possible. Secure the engine or have another person hold it down. Easiest to work at eye level. Do not heat the exposed crank shaft. That would cause it to expand. You want to heat only the adapter to get it’s hole and thus grip on the crankshaft to expand. You may have to get the adapter pretty hot to loosen its grip on the crankshaft. And for God’s sake wear eye protection and gloves and have no carb or gas tank in sight. Watch for the slightest movement (for your mental well being at the time). Some adapters let go relatively soon, and others need to remain heated until they are almost completely off. I never tried cooling (thermal shocking) any of them off. The reason being you are dealing with the end of an iron casting (the crankshaft) which is very susceptible to cracking under such circumstances. I know, I know the journal surfaces are hardened before grinding at the factory, but that is a form of induction hardening and more or less just forms a hard case which they then grind. Stay with it, I never ever had an adapter that didn’t come off, and I removed hundreds. Let me know when you are successful, and do not get so excited to have it off that you pound the sump cover over the rust on the exposed portion of the crankshaft without sanding to prevent scoring the sump bearing surface or it will leak oil there forever more once reassembled!!
For those not willing to do all that or if you like in a rustbelt like me and don't feel like cutting the adaptor off you can just put the blade on with 2 regular 3/8 washers and drill out the adaptor for 2 1/4" bolts were the pins were. This is how most of the old mowers had there blade put on.

Do push mowers and riding mower spindles need a torque spec for the mower blade bolt or can I just rattle them up with an impact? Thanks for the informative video.
Everything has torque specs, but many home owners do not have the tools necessary to do that. Here is what I found that best describes it. The owners manual recommends torquing the blade bolt to 35-40 ft. lbs. If you have a torque wrench it is good to use it. If a torque wrench is not available, use a wrench around 12-15 inches long and tighten the bolt as tight as you can get it.
Hey there Chickanic... wanted to report on the "nipples" count in the video. 1st, you have a great style of presentation with your relaxed outfits, flip flops, and like the many of us, working in your backyard or where ever our stuff breaks down. Thank you for keeping it real. I counted nine occurrences however, one sounded singular "nipple" and not "nipples". Don't know if the give away is still offered, but the challenge mentioned in the oil seal replacement inspired me to watch and count even though I'm familiar with changing blades. Funny you mentioned about blade orientation. The dude I bought one of my deere mowers from used selling point that blades were new. At quick glance, the cutting edge looked new. The mower was filthy and when I removed the deck to service and put gator blades on, discovered they were on upside down and as a result, almost ruined the star because the washer size and the curvature of the mounting part of the blade, allowed the blades to move(a disaster in the making). I managed to secure new blades on (correctly) without replacing spindles. Thanks again.
Just a quick note of thanks for your recommendation of the trimmer head 400 it's a 1000 times better than the stihl head . Also echoes black diamond 105 trimmer line is the best I've found. Congrats on 20 grand. Thank you again!!!
I've got the puller on mine and heated it with the torch and still wont budge! I got this mower from my friend about thirty years ago and it was never treated good! Is there anyway the metals could have fused together over time!? Repositioned the puller and this time used the oxy/acetal torch and hit it with the hammer, and nothing!!! I still have to get the pulley for the drive after this!!! Ugh!!!
@@garybulwinkle82 I had a similar problem on 30 y old one just 2 days ago( lubricating and the puller did not work), after heating with a torch I mounted the puller again directly centered on the shaft (bolts were 'too soft') then used automotive electric impact driver and it worked bit by bit till adapter was off ( no metals fused) pl
@@garybulwinkle82 If they aren't the same metal there can be galvanic corrosion that would be difficult to budge. I worked on one with my dad a few years ago that we hit it with a lot of heat, and a heavy duty puller dad made and didn't get it off, ended up using an angle grinder to cut a slice in it to get it off. I don't remember anything looking odd once we got it off. I'd suggest that route before giving up completely, we ground/cut into the shaft some but doesn't appear to affect anything.
Can over tight mower blades prevent shearing the nubs off, possibly bending the crankshaft after hitting a rock or metal? I started using a torque wrench every time.
Hopefully you can tell me if most blade adapters are the same diameter, I have a Powersmart DB2194PR (170cc) that I cannot purchase a replacement blade for and hope I can get another manufactures blade adapter and use their blade as well
Good to know info 🙂 I believe you said NIPPLES 9 time. For extra credit you said plug 🔌6 times. Happy 4th hopefully you had and awesome one and a safe one. MERICA flag 🇺🇲
Well now that was a interesting video and what a very useful tip just pull the lawn mower straight back handles down with a weight on them. I never thought of that for some reason good to know.
I've changed several blades on push mowers but I've never had the adapter part thats on the crankshaft that would come off without a puller an sometime even had to use some heat .most were probably much older than the one you were working on ?
On the Forth of July, I was collecting donations for the DAV at one of our local BBcue restaurants. It was hot, real hot. I just flip my Snapper Ninja on its side (air filter up, of course) and rattle the blade off with my battery impact with a 9/16” socket. Nothing fancy or slow. It is off in less time than it took to write this. I use my angle grinder to sharpen the blade and I balance it, afterwards. I then reinstall the blade and rattle it back on with the impact with a couple of good raps. It ain’t coming off. I have never had to replace the blade adapter because I haven’t hit anything hard with the lawnmower. I have the deck set high enough to miss most stuff - stepping stones, edges of concrete walks, water hoses, etc. I set it on 3 in the winter and 4 in the summer.
Here's a question for you chickanaic, I have a Murray push mower and bent the blade which I straightened and when I start it the mower shakes and vibrates so bad that I can't hold the handle. Any suggestions?
Super Great informative video. Two small exceptions were observed however. For Safety's sake. First off please use a split lock style lock washer under the bolt head. Second as others have mentioned please torque the bolt to the proper manufactures specifications. Maybe by the previous owner not torqueing the blade bolt property is why the Nipples broke/sheared off. Battery powered impacts should get the job done. Just seemed to me that the video impact action was a little on the light side. As far as which direction to tip a mower for service is concerned. I have found out that if the spark plug is pointing up everything should be ok. Some mowers orientate the engine differently such as early Snapper walk behinds. They had the spark plug on the side of the mower not the front. It is great to see the ladies take lead roles in the world of mechanics.
What about using mulching blades on a riding mower without the mulching kit. I know with the kit in tall Grass it will bug it down and that's rough on the mower but I'm talking about a high lift mulching blade using a side discharge.
Very Good- using a heavy object to hold down handle when changing blade. I learned that a long time ago. All these Part Time Mechanics suggested left side or right side. I noticed smoke would come out of muffler. You have a New Subsciber now :)
Do you know if there is a specific shear value engineered into the nipples? I ask because I am thinking it would be easy to drill out the nipple locations and replace them with studs. Not necessarily that easy for many, but I do have machines that can make very accurate holes and stud diameters. My guess is that to protect the shaft, the protrusions on the adaptor are designed to shear way before other things inside break.
The blade adapter is cast from very soft metal. Yes, they are designed to shear off under stress. They only protrude 1/2 way though the blade, and the mating washer has similar nipples that go the other half way into the blade from the other side.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Do you know how soft? I know the easy thing to do would be to purchase a new one, but what’s the fun in that. Repairing the existing one sounds way more interesting . Perhaps aluminum replacement studs or even zinc. Maybe brass?
I just changed the blade on my mower that I bought last year, and it was installed backwards at the factory! I have thick grass, so I thought the jams in the chute were because of that. After I orientated the blade correctly, it handles grass much better.
Just a heads up about tilting the lawnmower. You can ABSOLUTELY tilt the lawnmower over to the side! Make sure you pull your starter cord slowly until you feel resistance, which means that your pison is at top dead center. Once your piston is at top dead center, tilt your lawn mower over to the EXAUST side NOT the carb side. There is actually a UA-cam video showing 2 different mowers tilted this way and left for 24 hrs. There was NO leaking of oil and both started full pull without smoking. Remember there are many ways to skin a cat. Thanks. ua-cam.com/video/eeEVigsVqrE/v-deo.html
Can you show taking off a blade adaptor with with 2 jaw puller when then are rusted together ? Anti-seize on the shaft to prevent adaptor Rusted on ? Great video I have seen a few times blades on upsidedown.
Love the shorts. Why not a top to match? All mower manuals that I read, yes, I do read my manuals, say to remove the spark plug(s). Only use a spark plug socket made to remove them. Did I miss that part where you tell your viewers to use a torque wrench when tightening the blade bolts? That is covered in the manual. When I reuse a bolt, I use an anti-seize compound on the threads. I might have to remove the bolt later.
I had a problem I did not understand. My lawnmower blade adapter nipples weee worn complete smooth no broke off. I was hoping to gain insight into this before installing a new one ( I did not hit anything. I checked the blade balance and it is not off but a fraction of a gram. )
I owned a Troy built riding mower and at the end of the first season the steering got as loose as a tub of guts and I couldn’t see how to fix the problem…what say you about this?
I have a old craftsman mower I'm trying to replace a carburetor that has been discontinued. I understand a Tecumseh aftermarket replaces it. I found a carburetor that matches but the screw in bottom of bowl has a spring? what is the spring on screw for? that is the only difference. I have saw this before but never run into it?
It must be really old. Some older carbs used a needle valve to control the fuel to air mixture of the carburetor. The screw controls this valve and the sprin keeps the screw from turning after the proper adjustment is made, ( usually 1 to 1 - 1/2 turns out from bottom set position).

Happy you tried it Jeff! Thanks for watching!
IM SO EXCITED NOW GOTTA GO CHANGE MY BLADE NOW. 😅😅😅
I've never had a blade adapter come off that easy!
Question: Do need to use one with star cut out or can I use one with regular drilled circle holes?
This is the best clickbait I've seen in a while!
Can over tight mower blades prevent shearing the nubs off, possibly bending the crankshaft after hitting a rock or metal?
I started using a torque wrench every time.
I love listening to u I am learning a little I am having trouble with my riding mower getting it fix with the decker
Hi, Fantastic videos, the blades on my John Deere LA 105 are somehow engaged all the time when disengaged , how do I fix this problem, thank you
Appreciate your tips and presentation style with slow clear instructions. You got a new subscriber. Stay safe
I wasn't aware that could be a problem, but now I know... Thank you for this educational video, Bri!
Me reading the thumbnail card: "Well, I had this phase in college where I shaved my chest, and once had a razor accident..."
What I thought!
Love your videos, and your outfit. Great to see a "chick" that can work on this stuff correctly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hello from Muscle Shoals Al. and my fair and honest small engine repair. Congrats on 22,300 subscribers. I counted 9 "nipples" in that video.
Your video lessons are always easy to absorb and apply for DIYers.

Great fix Chickanic! Congrats on 20,000 subs. Your hard work is appreciated.
Thank you!
Congratulations on the 20,000 subscribers!
Thanks Greta!!
Are crankshafts universal to most or any blade adapter? Need to switch an adapter that came from a B&S engine to a Honda engine.
Very good instructions, young lady.
Can't get my bolt off from my blade, any suggestions.... I have a TB110. Appreciate a response
YOU DO A GREAT JOB IN DESCRIBING EVERYTHING 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍😁😁😍😍
would u not give the blade nut abit more tension with the impact gun? ..do u watch( tyrell fixe's all) and( mustie 1)
We're all in love with you and your videos.
are all pushmower drive shafts standard or are they all different based on the model?
Thank you Chick, really appreciate your simple tips, and didn't realize not to tip mower from side to side! and happy 4th of July to you and yours!
love your show i like the softer lessons thanks
Happy 4th lady! Great video as usual! Those shorts scream “Murcia”
Thanks Darlin'! Happy 4th to you!
Was taking apart the mower to fix the crank case gasket and saw the little discs. Turns out the nips were sheared and have been for a while
What about using mulching blades on a riding mower without the mulching kit. I know with the kit in tall Grass it will bug it down and that's rough on the mower but I'm talking about a high lift mulching blade using a side discharge.
What was the reason you tilted the mower back instead of the side
Thanks your vid’s are interesting and informative especially tipping mower properly
Nice videos! I've never needed to change adapter, but I'm sure I'll need to after watching this video!😁
Very Good- using a heavy object to hold down handle when changing blade. I learned that a long time ago. All these Part Time Mechanics suggested left side or right side. I noticed smoke would come out of muffler. You have a New Subsciber now :)
really good information video Chickanic
Thank you for your time to help people
Bri!….i have a John Deere ST push mower…does the adapter key go up and into the belt pulley on the shaft?….most excellent mower videos, btw!
Chickanic! I Heard 9x🌋 I Think.....lol
I Love it 😂😂🇺🇸😂😂
You make the best videos do you have help.the other UA-camr say it takes all day so why are your so good? Gary.
taryl suggest rotating the blade to the same position to exactly see how bent it is because you might have a bent crankshaft
If my blade adapter keeps falling off the shaft of my push mower without the blade being on it, is that an indication I need a new blade adapter?
I know my blade is dull and needs replacing. Thanks for the great attention to details.

Hope you had a great 4th. Can you do a vid of this repair where the blade adapter is rusted on the shaft. Would be interested in how you remove it.
Congrats on the 20000 subs enjoy the channel
Thanks so much for the reminder to replace the blade on my Husqvarna
Great job. Easier than I thought. Thanks.
Chickanic when you increase your engine speed do your blades spin the same speed or faster
@@davidmorse8432 thanks and it is old the up and down switch is factory lever on the motor
Video idea.
Can you put any blade on a honda under the mulching blade that has a two blade system under the deck?
The answer is 9. I appreciate your videos. What do you think about Stihl?
This was an outstanding video... Thank you!
I learn something new with each episode. Could you do a clip on how to sharpen the mower blades, thanks Chickmechanic!
Thanks for very good information !
