The Rotring 600 is the classic and the Rotring 800 is the modern version of the Rotring 600 Gold version, with a retractable pipe. The Rotring 800 is the high-end version with street price of about 2x that of the 600.

    On Amazon Prime Day 2022, I purchased the Rotring 800 .5mm Pencil for $24.99. It was the only real Rotring deal I could find.

    Getting an 800 made me appreciate my 600 even more. Not a bad tool, was just expecting more for the price. Extending the lead feels way nicer on the cheaper 600

    If you drop Rotring 800, it becomes a projectile, with the lead dispenser head, going for crash landing into a hard surface. With all that mass, 2 feet drop is all you need to make this mechanical pencil a peace of ugly paper weight.
    That is exactly what happened to my son. And all that misery that followed about getting the pencil fixed. Countless hours on UA-cam. And alas it is so complex to even open, what is the point. So we decided to call Rotring service center. The pencil was barely 3 months old. They tell me that it will be covered under warranty. I mail the pencil to France and then get an email saying that it will cost me $36 to repair the pencil.
    Hunh? That is more than it costs me to buy a new one. I tell them not to mail me the damaged pencil and I don't want to proceed with the repair.
    So, after $8 in sending them pencil for repair, and my informing them not to mail the damaged pencil back, they did send it back completely mangled piece of junk. It seems the technician working on the pencil also struggled opening the damn pencil. Porting 800 was butchered. And they spent another $5-6 to ship me back damaged pencil in a nice plastic container.
    Damn it. What a waste of time and money.

      Eye opening comment. Those that of us who read Taleb we kneo the high importance of the asymteries that lay in the average day-to-day usage of units (in this regard: time and use) vs unexpected highly improbable tail-events (pencil fall downs) that bring down the whole system. Do a research on Thr Turkey problem.

    I bought my first rotring about 5 years ago it was randomly on sale i knew nothing about pens and pencils it just had good reviews so I purchased it. 5 years later I’m obsessed with this brand and only use rotring . I own every color way in the 600 and 800 and even got the limited edition Japan models too haha 😂. The only thing that bugs me about the 800 is that the twist mechanism begins to rattle and loosen after some time.

      @@chessfan my favorite model is the yellow 600, But I had to pay a lot for it. My favorite model to actually use is the 800 because it has a tad more weight to it and it feels superior. The inside parts are used with actual metal parts instead of plastic that is used in the 600. I do believe the 800 is worth the price.

    1. Years ago I bought a 600, which I love and use daily. I have in fact dropped it three times directly on the tip, which I did my best to straighten. Not perfect, but it works fine. So though the 800's retractable tip looks like a pointless gimmick, I can state that there is a valid use case. Once I drop it enough to break it, I will replace it with another 600. I just don't like the useful gimmick of the 800.
    2. For me the spinning lead grade indicator is a useless gimmick, as in regular use it doesn't stay in place.

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, I tend to go with the 600. I do have a soft spot for the 800 pen, even though the retraction doesn't really make a big difference.

    🤔Wonder how my life could be without all (+ 20) those 600's and 800's that i have?😅🤭🤗 My 2 cents: First, black finnish will disappear with some use..silver is more durable. Second:the 800 that i use daily does have a harsh and almost impossible sometimes problem with the retractable mechanism...😥Wobbling of the point also a bit disapointing in the 800. Both are made in Japan..like the 500 series also.

    It's unquestionable the 800 has a functional and elegant engineering advantage, but the 600 just feels like a Graphgear 500 with a metal body for over thrice the price. If you really want one of these, I say go big.

    Extending lead is nicer on 600. But you can’t put it in your pocket. You’d have to toss it if drops off your desk. It’s 800 all the way for me.

      @@Unlucky1776 Well you could try to straighten the bent tip with pliers. Or look for the 800 to go on sale. By the way it is pretty easy to stop the wobble on the 0.5 tipped 800. After that you can put in your pocket, if you don’t mind the powder coating to come of gradually. To be honest, all of the Rotrings have little kinks, like being way too heavy for comfort. These days I am mostly using my Leuchturm pencil.
