Hey Bernth Thanks for sharing us with your experience as a guitar player 😊😊 I got to say you improve so much at your video quality ☺️☺️ YOU ROCK, KEEP ON ROCKING
I think the biggest issue I had for the longest time was id use my arm as my picking mechanism rather than my wrist. Once i learned to use my wrist and on top of that learn to relax both my hands as much as possible things change a fuck load for the better. Even today this day when I practice I make sure to be as relaxed as possible. Also wondering if you could make a video in regards to a regular day of practice that you do or how you practiced to get where you are now. The videos of the exercises you have and such are awesome but how did you manage to get from point A to point B what was the inbetween like?
The 2007 video hides quite a LOT of mistakes since the sound is so bad - if you would listen to that playing now it would be a completely different story :)
My first show I didn't even play guitar. But incredible to see your progress. I've been making all the same mistakes and I've been playing for 20 years and now it's super hard to fix those errors. It's a big deal to have a good teacher who can ensure you have the best technique and someone who can teach you theory and most important ensure that your basics of the instrument are solid because once you have that then the possibilities are limited only by your imagination and how much you practice.
My fuck, what a skill... I'm watching your 2007 playing like "what do you mean, he's pretty good", then your 2020 and that's when I understood what you meant. Such an insane improvement, gives one hope that by consistently practicing you can really get yours skills to a whole new level in a matter of months!
You’re really an amazing artist, and equally amazing teacher! After 38 years of playing since 8th grade (10 years of real playing, and 28 years of life and kids of rarely playing), I’ve gotten seriously back into my guitar. Huge fan of Di Meola, Metheny, Holdsworth, Van Halen, Lifeson and others, and now feeling like with input from masters like you I’m making accelerated progress on the aggressive lead guitar I like to play! Considering doing the Patreon thing, but regardless you should be super proud of your impact in this “sea” of UA-cam instruction. Hats off!
I am about 3 years playing guitar .For the first 2 years i was like yea i can play fast yea, then after to try to recordme and discover how bad i play i started to search videos like this. Then i find bernth and i improved a lot in just two months.Thank you bernth keep it up

Thank you for this video , Bernth !! My biggest issue is that I've been playing for over 35 years & only now I'm trying to correct "bad" technique issues that have been engrained in my playing from all those years of doing it wrong !!! I finally got frustrated with never getting any better so I started watching your videos & introducing your teachings into my practice . I'm still a long way from where I'd like to be but I can happily say that I am really noticing a dramatic improvement from where I was 9 months ago !!! Some of the old bad habits are really hard to break but I'm working at it !!
I'm in the same boat as you. Right around 33+ years of playing. I wish UA-cam had been available back when I was a kid, aspiring to "make it big, "and spent every spare moment i had sitting on the edge of my bed playing 5-6 hours a night on school nights. 10-15 hours on weekends. Or at band practice... we had our monthly issues of guitar world for fresh material. And whatever you could scrounge up from the local music store. Now, you wanna know something, search for it via UA-cam and viola! Instant Master classes for everything at our fingertips. UA-cam should be credited for the Second Renaissance we're likely to see in music and the arts. Pretty awesome stuff. And Bernth's videos are the cream of the crop. I am a patrion subscriber and I recommend joining if you appreciate Bernth's UA-cam videos. It's just more of the same good quality stuff. And his master classes are incredible! Worth $7 a month that's for sure. Thanks Bernth! Your fucking awesome for doing what you do.
I started playing in the summer of 2006. I got pretty decent, played in a couple of bands, played live, etc. In 2016, I suffered a stroke. After the stroke I pretty much gave up on guitar, my hand synchronization was completely out of whack, my picking was horrendous, and my fretting hand was atrocious (especially in regards to finger independence). I didn't touch my instruments in any significant manner for about 4 years. A couple of months ago, I felt the spark again and have been playing a little more each day, trying to focus my practice beyond noodling. Your channel is one of the channels I cherish deeply as you provide clear explanations and have a humble outlook. Thank you for all that you provide (for free I might add). PS Have you ever done, or thought about doing, a video discussing how you approach learning other artists' songs?
@@flol3266 Appreciate the reply. I was 24 when I had my stroke, 28 now. I had a hole in my heart (unbeknownst to me) known as a PFO which sent a blood clot to my brain. I got the hole patched up now though. It's been quite a journey, physical therapy and all.

The last part gave me goosebumps. The 2 videos comparing your live performances are too cool. You worked your ass off to get there, and you deserve all of your success. Can't wait to hear and see what you'll have in the future.
I've been playing a lot longer than you (I'm older) but so what? You prove that discipline and ambition can make a great player, which is clearly what you are. It doesn't matter that I'm not much interested in "shredding", what matters is that you demonstrate what is possible when you make the effort. I can't do any of that stuff you do! Excellent work, Bernth.

New to your channel - you are easily one of the best UA-cam metal players I've seen and heard. Awesome. For me, coming back to guitar after many years, the best thing I've done is get formal lessons with a teacher (e.g spend money on learning rather than gear), music theory and improving timing by using a metronome. The metronome especially has helped my timing and the theory has helped with my "musicality" which is what you are getting at I think. I used to just play patterns fast, now I'm slower but trying to focus on hitting "right notes" in key and in term. It's a slog but its helping. Style change to mostly classical as well, which seems to suit where I am. Still play the ax a bit though.... :)
3:39 this is my biggest demon I'll have to face. This is exactly how I'm picking like 20 years now. I thought it is too late to fix it, but this video gave me confidence. Thanks for that. See you in next 20 years🤯
Great videos, for the right hand, I am playing with open fingers. I will try closing them right away. Left hand I had the exact opposite issue. I found out early a good position to extend fingers but then I tried to bend notes for blues, with the thumb low, and it failed for a few years. Music theory, I am learning it now, and I love connecting the things I knew separately, into one big ensemble. Great video that makes me believe that I am on a good path.
Awesome and cool approach to past mistakes. You certainly don’t feel ashamed of that and I think a 4th topic here for us learners is to treat ourselves gently and with patience, the way you did. Thanks.
Bernth - you've come such a long way, and that small comparison in the end is amazing! Similarly on UA-cam, I remember when you were on 20K subs, and now look at you! The vast amount of knowledge present in this channel, especially for free, is simply incredible. On the topic of your video, this is why I think recording yourself is such an important thing to do. You're able to get unbiased feedback from others to see exactly what it is in your playing that needs addressing, and for looking back to see how far you've come! What ever happened to that flying V in 2007? Is it still around?
Thank you very much for your kind words Raghd and for being part of my journey for so long now :) You are absolutely right - not only does it serve as a great reference for later (and motivation! you will see lots of improvements), it also really helps with getting better and analyzing your playing at the moment! I think I traded that Flying V back then for my first 7 string - it did look pretty metal but the Floyd Rose was killing me as an inexperienced player back then! I constantly switched tunings and wondered why it didn't stay in tune... another lesson learned :)
Humble, smart and super helpful. You get to the point and make things easy to understand. No tricks either. Practice!!! Not trying to sell snake oil. Thanks
Great video! I'm definitely a big victim to the theory thing. I think I have a quite decent basic technique which doesn't hinder me improving and just grows better but I have little to no clue about music theory (I knew the pentatonic shapes and all the modern western modes, I can name the notes on my fretboard or at least I'm able to derive them quickly but that's it). While my technique keeps getting better and I know very well how to push further, I don't have the slightest idea how I should best start to get some essential music theory under my belt.
100% on weird right hand techniques. I've had to retool my technique a few times and it really, really sucks. Some people say that you should just do whatever feels natural, usually citing examples of great players who have weird right hand technique. However, if we're being honest, people like Bernth who have worked hard at optimzing their technique can play circles around most of those players of yesteryear that stuck with their quirky techniques.
Thank you for sharing this! I wish I'd seen this back when I started playing. Still, your "banana technique" is better than my current playing by leagues. Love all your videos - they are really really helpful, so please keep them coming! Grüße :)
Its funny because that banana grip is what dean from archspire uses and damn does he pick well. Tobi from archspire also does Benson picking which is a very different style as well.
New subscriber here. You have really inspired me to pick my guitar back up and get some real progress. Thank you for your informative and direct videos. You really explicitly outline what us peasants need to improve upon.
Ive been playing about 4-5 years and feel stuck. The main problems I have are 1. Chord progression for the fingers to make playing more efficient and smoother 2. Different picking techniques. I’ve been stuck in my habits for so long that it is like learning everything over again. I’ve never had lessons and not sure if I should. Also, how do people stretch their fingers for absurd chords without them cramping constantly?
@@jameslesperance1 ive taken a music theory and its was extremely valuable and fun for piano but I have just started to compare it to guitar. I was honestly surprised how easy tabs and sheet music converts. Almost exact same. Pretty cool tbh
Well playing alot will always make ur fingers/hands stronger, but their are these clamps with adjustable force for training hand strength (mostly for fitness but also works very good for guitar/bass players) i even once saw one with adjustable strenght for ea separate finger made for mucisians!
Dude, these are all the issues I'm dealing with right now. I've been playing since I was 8, now I'm about to turn 29 and trying to fix my bad habits and learn correctly.
@5:25 - You might try MAB's technique of using the unused picking fingers as a kickstand on the guitar body, which takes the mass out of the hand, creates a fulcrum, and leaves the fingers in position for some chicken picking.

Holy Shit! I have to applaud you for showing us this video it gives us a real sense of hard work and it pays off
This is so inspiring! Thank you for your work and dedication to the craft!
Both first issue of right hand and left hand big problems of my in back day's but i analyzed my mistakes and did it same way which is bernth showing
Grüße :)
My favourite pandemic Guitar tutor!!❤️❤️
Thank you Bernth, 🙏🙏
Best channel for guitar.l prefer your videos to my musical friends
Thanks for sharing part of your journey 👍. Always inspirational. Thanks 🤘🤘
"Never Give Up on Your Dreams" ❤
So clean
You mentioned to one of my main left hand problem which I am involved with it near one year and it's so upsetting.
This video is epitome of true mentorship!
Your lessons are pure gold, thank you man!
Thank you sir for this video ☺️ lots of love from india (sikkim).
Bernth your tone in 2007 was very different than now.
Okay the last 30 seconds of this video are actually really inspirational.
Fantastic channel, I just found it, thanks.
I think you can be satisfied with and proud of your guitar skills. Your playing is killer. :)
Lol wow I needed to watch this video man.. very inspiring thank you my friend
Schönes Video, Danke Bernth! LG aus NÖ
That's a really good idea, I have a whole guitar journal dating back to 2009, haha!
Thanks for such a nice video.
Thank you for this, man!
You are My inspiration ♥️♥️♥️
Awesome video and awesome advice !!
Great video and informative!
Bernth, u deserve over 20 million sub
Dude, these are all the issues I'm dealing with right now. I've been playing since I was 8, now I'm about to turn 29 and trying to fix my bad habits and learn correctly.
Very impressive😊. Need to learn lots from you master👍..😳
Fuck yeah! I bet you're stoked with your current level of skill
You are doing great work. When I have more time maybe I join your patreon channel🙂
@5:25 - You might try MAB's technique of using the unused picking fingers as a kickstand on the guitar body, which takes the mass out of the hand, creates a fulcrum, and leaves the fingers in position for some chicken picking.
Chicken Picking with Shredding… that technique could be called shredded chicken.
Amazing playing as always ☺️ but got confused by your Michael Angelo Batio looking side lamps 😂
Anyone gonna notice the sick background set? Looks like a Wacken type headline stage rig or something. Fucking amazing!
This is great. Next video must be on Downpicking concepts and exercises
Excelente idea
Verry good . Thanks.
I hope I can also shred my guitar up, just like you are 😎🎸🤘🏻
at around 12:10 that lick sounds like the intro solo to peace sells by megadeth
I don't think i will ever achieve your 2007 level 😂😅 You're basically a God, bro!
