What do you do when every BERNTH video shows you more things you're doing wrong and gives your more excises to fix them...!! I guess just hit the shed and don't come out until you can shred :) Thx for all the videos, you are a fantastic resource for overcoming playing issues.
At age 43, I'm gonna have get good fast asf if I wanna be successful before I graduate highschool. 4 years from whenever I start goin is coming up quick.
A super old school finger dexterity trick I used to do during high school helped me make tons of progress. Do the traditional "Metal Horns" with your Fretting hand and hold for 5 seconds. Then invert the shape so the middle and ring fingers are up but the index and pinky are tucked behind your thumb...hold for 5 seconds. Then "shift" the shape so the index and ring are tucked leaving the pinky and middle fingers...5 seconds Then shift the shape again so the index and ring fingers are up...5 seconds. Get used to those motions and that pattern. Do 4 reps of 5 seconds in each shape. After that, see how quickly you can cycle through all the patterns. That tiny trick is something you can do throughout the day while you are away from your guitar and it builds dexterity and finger independence very rapidly.
I love how the collab is all different skill levels, all at different points on their musical journey and all getting better thanks to what you do. And you did a killer job putting it all together and showcasing all of them. Seriously awesome man, one of the coolest things ive seen in a very long time! Cheers to all of them too, keep up the great work!
I am really starting to like the content and teaching style of BERNTH more than other channels! It's lean and mean with nicely condensed information that make sense! Thanks!
Great lesson. Number 3, applies to everything and is one of the biggest things that I have found holding others back. It is also wonderful when someone gets it and instantly realizes just how much easier and more natural playing is when they learn it. Perhaps a lesson on keeping the fretting hand loose despite what the picking hand is doing, if you have not already done so. Thanks Bernth, and again, really great lesson.
A lot of these issues I’ve slightly noticed and throughout the video I noticed myself doing all of these! Just having someone list and explain beginner issues helps me a lot. Thanks!
Cool! I certainly have a DGOD so I'm immediately adding this to my practice routine! Thanks Bernth! Loved the collab, too! Bonus exercise: learn to play all contributions heheh ;p
I've payed a number of instructors for a lesson, but none of them told me about my left hand posture which was dead wrong. Should've known you earlier Bernth. Thank you for making me a better guitarist every week. Cheers from Korea!
Thanks Bernth! Somehow you always manage to bring up topics I never thought I should focus on. Even better, topics noone else is talking about. Keep it up!
#Bernth you are the greatest. I have watched as many of your Shredding lessons that I can. All of them are fantastic, and they have helped me more than anything I've tried before. Keep up the SUPER WORK!!!
DGOD was really hard for me to overcome (I am mostly self-taught), but doing that helped a LOT. I never thought about anchoring the index finger, but hearing you call it out made me recognize immediately I do it too much and need to break the habit. Thanks!
You are what I’ve been looking for, I’ve been trying to play the guitar but could never get my fingers to act right. The finger exercise you demonstrated I feel will help me to get started.
When I think about the fact that I've been playing for nearly 17 years and I'm still intermediate at best I worry that my bad habits may be too entrenched by now to learn my way out of them and that I might never be good, so looking at talented guitarists often makes me feel pretty down about myself. With that in mind, these videos are great for just concisely explaining what some problems are, how to correct them and some exercises to practice doing so. The fear of eternal mediocrity is still there, but at least I know how to try now
I sort of did the same thing in a way. I’d been playing since I was 14 (27 years.) I had a dog bite my left hand, tearing up my pinky, ring, middle fingers and thumb. It shredded my skin and crushed the bones. I couldn’t play any longer, at least while bandaged and splinted up. I switched to left hand playing. Mentally, I still knew all of the music theory I’d learned and memorized through the years, but physically, I might as well had been 14 again. Perhaps it was worse than starting over, at least when I started playing right handed, it felt natural to play that way. I picked up playing the piano at about 20 years old, so my right hand wasn’t too disoriented fretting strings. It was my picking technique and basically reversing everything I’d ever learned. Well now 3 years later, I’ve never been as fluent as I am now. It truly makes a difference learning things correctly. I wish I had as many resources back then as we do now. It’s scary to think about how many more crazy shredders we would have had in the 80’s if UA-cam was around then like it is now. Or maybe where guitar will be in another 20 years with how easy it is to be saturated with knowledge and theory.
@Galen Marek in contrast, back in the old days we would have hundreds of impressive guitar players playing utterly good songs, and nowadays we have tons of guitar players making, at the end, only lots of noise. I'm not saying shred is disgusting, and period, but shredding without an outstanding musical hook is just garbage.
@@galenmarek8287 l play bass and fractured my pluckibg fingers, so l started using a pick 100% of the time, figuring l could pluck again when they healed. Well, they never got their strength back, and l prefer the sound of the pick.
Take a month or two off from playing to lose the habits and then immediately start practicing proper technique to prevent muscle memory from taking over.
I thought the same for years about my bad picking habit but 1 day sucked it up and forced myself to completely change my picking style, felt so unnatural and difficult but only took a couple hours to start getting used to it and a couple weeks for it to become habit. Ive heard before it takes on average 30 consistent days working on something to fully break a habit
Stumbled upon your channel a few months ago. But this notification got me to exercise #1, and I have to say, that I realized just how bad my fretting habits really are! That's such a neat excersise, that it alone practiced daily will certainly make a difference. Now I can't wait to watch the rest of the video! Thanks!
I assumed this would be some clickbait bullshit but im glad i stayed, as a relative beginner starting to learn legato this has been amazing and id something ill work on straight away, thanks, youve got yourself a follower!
Most detailed and in depth explanations of techniques. Awesome channel. Anyone who wants to take that next step , this is the channel you want. Thanks for all the content!
I cant agree more on the point you illustrated in the video, this is especially important for hands synchronisation. As right hand does the continuous alternative picking, but left hand always have different pace if you leave index finger still for anchoring. For training individuals movement, it helps the brain to sync both hands by one hand finger movements with another hand consistent picking speed. You will know that every picking matches one particular finger pressing on the fret.
A line I use when teaching students how to use a wood lathe, from an old Hollywood movie about Cyrano de Bergerac, "Hold the sword as you would a bird. Too tight and you kill it. Too loose and it flies away." Still working on that one for my guitar work.... Oh, after watching the shreds, maybe do one like the trend of have a cord progression and the guitarists play shreds to the same tune.... Still wish I had many hours per day to practice...
Why dont you play the exercises slowly once. The patterns are too complex to copy by ear also ...can not tell which fingers are fretting because of the camera position. I would follow your channel but for that. I dont want to waste practice time trying to see what you are doin. They look like really great exercises though.
SO fun watching this again after so many months. I was soooo stressed trying to get mine down lmao. Wish I could redo this now haha, but it was really fun and a great learning experience. 😁🤘
watched this video and was super glad you went over things i had only recently noticed myself and had started correcting, thought i was overthinking things but nop, bernth knows the score
if you are planning on continuing making videos for beginners, please consider showing proper techniques of using alternate picking for open chords, power chords and chugging, along with tips for improving left hand speed. Would be a complete package : ) Thanks for your work!
This is a fantastic lesson, as are all the lessons you post. I am guilty as charged and I have made such slow progress as a result! Thanks for posting this. Your videos are always very professional. Absolute top quality. Cheers! \m/
Hey man you're always saying how thankful you are to your fans and stuff don't forget your f****** an awesome dude man and I love your f****** videos sorry about the language
12:43 What on earth did this dude do to his audio? Personally I'd have asked him to redo that..love watching shreds though and awesome lessons! Do you have any lessons perhaps for older players just starting out or might have dexterity issues, I've a bad burn scar on my fretting hand between my thumb and forefinger that's making things difficult for me, particularly for stretching out. Would love some advice.
I have a question. I’ve seen players pick the strings as their right hand is floating above the strings. I’ve also seen players who have their pinky/ other fingers on the body of their guitar as they pick, kinda like fingerstyle acoustic guitar style. What is your opinion on this matter? Other opinions are also appreciated.
Bernth could you make a video about phrasing? Like marty friedman or jeff loomis style. I think they are the best at it. And should make for a great video
Can you do a video to prevent nerve damage like stretching after you play and before you play. I'm asking you this because i recently got carpal tunnel syndrome and i don't want people to go through that like i did. And also what is best position for the fretting hand. I can see your fretting hand is horizontal. My fretting hand is almost vertical!
Are your lessons suitable for beginners ? Am practising about a year, about 2 hrs a day and looking to increase. I wonder should I come back to you in a years time as Im focused on acoustic guitar at the moment. I like your lessons
Exercise #2 is great, because it feels like it SHOULD be an easy lick to play, but it can be hard purely because of bad playing habit and undeveloped technique.
I discovered this pretty early in my journey. This is a rule of thumb in any instrument ... Always watch for tension in any part of your hand ... if it is uncomfortable, causing pain then your technique is not right ... ideally you should be able to play for 2 3 hours with out any pain.
I just joined the guitarists. Bought Esp ltd m-50 + Micro cube GX. Is my setup lacking something or was the amp or guitar itself bad decition? Wondering should i have gone for stratocaster or something?
Love every video Bernth ! I had a quick question 🙋♂️ what kind of acoustic guitar strings do you use as well as electric ?(: hope you have a good day!

one of the great lessons from a great teacher, and one of the best communities!
BERNTH is highly recommend youtuber for me when it comes to guitar teaching, techniques etc...
I agree.
What I love about guitar is that it evolves by players breaking the rules. Too many rules and techniques can be an impediment to the creative process.
