Berth is a great teacher, and I don't even like metal music. Still learn a lot and he produce good lessons in an entertaining way. I will practice this one a lot!
Simply amazing & inspiring to watch you (being such a fantastic guitar player) transform your technique & make such a drastic improvement in your playing !! I've been working on this exercise since you showed it to us 6 months ago but I've got a long way to go to get the cleanliness & precision you're getting !! LOL still working at it though & have made great jumps forward (my friends have even noticed) !! Thanks to you for all the help !! You genuinely seem to want to make us all better musicians & we appreciate all you do !!
I really appreciate the breakdown on the pick grip. I’ve been trying to rebuild my right hand technique. To be cleaner and more fluid. After all these years, it feels so difficult and frustrating. It’s nice to see someone else in the process of refinement. Also I love the before and after analysis. That’s helpful!
The pinky struggle is real. 😂 Your exercizes are like a guitar boot camp. Great stuff for fast progress and I love how how exercizes help to understand what's wrong in my own playing and to fix issues I didn't even know I had. The spider is my regular routine now, I'll check out this one this evening. :)
I just recorded my practice routine today but daaaag I am excited to get working on this. This also opens up to a lot of Paul Gilbert style picking. Just gotta put on that astronaut suit, my good sir.
I love the close attention to detail you put into this video (almost scientific) it allows us to see through your eyes, simple ways to analyze, problem solve to find the correction needed, and then execute the best possible correction through trial and error thank you for sharing this
you add such challenge to my practice you just so damn right . i have never realize how 30 years of incorrect self taught technique has held me back THANK YOU BERNTH!
I added this to my practice regimen about 2, maybe 3 months ago. I had been practicing mostly the same things on loop prior to adding this but I feel like this one really helped me make strides not just in sheer velocity of noise coming from my guitar but it seemed to help clean up a lot of my other practices as well. The odd note grouping was REALLY hard to get used to, and it's still easy to get tripped up when pushing it to 180ish BPM but unlike some other things I've spent time on, I felt like working this in every day has actually made a very noticeable difference. Thank you Bernth
Hey Bernth, again an incredible awesome video! I switched my picking hand position exactly the same like you a few months ago, and it was a blast. And I see the struggle with the pinky still at my playing and working on exactly that problem for some weeks now. It feels a bit like starting from the scratch again but it's getting better and better every day and finally it even feels more "natural". Reprogramming muscle memory is not an easy task, so I'll take my time. Thank you for the extra motivation, again! Grüße aus Gevelsberg \o/
Wonderful lesson, since I`, almost 60 and my Costa Rican Band Igni Ferroque 43, I was never able to develop my picking speed and technic, now since I understand your way to progress, I have improved both, but never that fast, which is ok and as an advice for those like my self, I use this same pattern but with pull ups and hammer on trying to achieve a cleaner sound and Berth`s speed and that way, I`m almost there. I’m really glad that I happen to see this video bcz I’m a beginner playing electric guitar. I play a lot on my classical and flamenco guitars and the electric was just gathering dust hanging on the wall. I had it for years but didn’t have the motivation to pick it up and play. Last December though, I told myself that this will be my New Years resolution to learn how to play it and stick to it. So I try to watch lots of tutorials on you tube. Thank you and I subbed✌🏼
The picking is a complicated issue, each hand is different and there are physiological matters that make a grip much easier or confortable than other for each one, in my case i use a similar grip to your new grip, but i use my pinky for suport or stabilize the hand. i got problems in my arms and i found this way to improve precision. Thanks for you dedication, honesty and realism in showing progress.
Hopping back into guitar practice after some serious downtime, your videos are really great material for shaking of the rust and you have an amazing practice routine, I appreciate the effort you put into all your videos man!
I'm very thankful for all your videos. My overall abilities have gotten so much better from your lessons. So, thank you very much for all the help!!🙏🙏🤘🤘
Super Video Bernth! Danke für Deine extrem hilfreichen Videolessons.Need to relearn pick holding and hand placement after 20 years of playing. New Goal!
Using this practice, I've gotten IMMENSELY better. I could already play scales and whatnot, I love playing Rings of Saturn and Infant Annihilator songs, but I did have a problem with exaggerated motions in my left hand. This helped a lot to retrain my fret hand from about 6 years of bad practice
I too use the jazz 3 picks.. seems the only way to go for playing metal.... i had a nice venom V pick but lost it.. would recommend them too..nice video very informative..
By trying your picking technique and also by playing a LOT lighter on the right hand i was finally able to play fast sequences of notes... Thank you.. Now i have to work ... :')
Troy Grady from Cracking the Code talks about picking A LOT. I'm happy to see someone talk about pick technique as there exist many variations. Grady would likely say that your old picking style was supinated versus your new grip which is pronated. I wish more guitarists talked about their picking hand! Thanks
Its pretty insane how a beginner guitarist can get such amazing insights thanks to amazing content creators like yourself! Thank you for guiding my guitar learning journey!
I recently made this exact same change in right-hand picking technique. Definitely cleaner and more confident all around the fretboard. Just trying to get the speed up, that’s still a problem. I seem to start out fast and run out of gas after a few notes.
In one way I hate to admit this but in another it shows my commitment to music. I'm 48 years old and have been playing guitar since I was 16. I am so much into music that I named my daughter Sabian I even have a shoulder to shoulder tattoo with the same font sabian uses on the symbols. And Yeah I purchased a brand new Pearl drum kit and 25 Sabian symbols it lives in a dedicated drum room. I completed a repair to my MIDI issues this morning at 4 AM on my rack system for my guitars. For decades My band members and I suffered from pick issues. I'm sure most of you have seen live videos that shows 20 or so picks attached to a mic stand. Well here's your pick grip solution. A musician is a creator just like a welder, carpenter or painter. I do all of that. The pick solution is to get sanding paper disks made to go on a bench sander. They have a glued surface on the back. once cut into the shape to cover 1/3 of the pick. You will never drop your pick again and you can hold it in any position you like for the style of music your playing. I am now able to shred twice as fast and with more control than ever before. keep playing and never stop. Unless your at a gun range and then I would say keep shooting until your outta rounds. make every round count just like every note counts!
I started playing rocksmith again to make practice more fun. I’ll really have to try this though, cause it looks like a sequence that can be applied to any scale... verrry handy.
I just tried this new grip you suggest and it's actually easier to play between strings and mute that above your index finger with palm. Not really sure about power chords, maybe i'm not used to play like that yet. Anyway i just started learning guitar so i stick to regular grip for now, and when i feel really confident with that, gonna start experiment with interesting things you share)Really appreciate your effort bro)
You mentioned here that your right hand was scraping the strings when picking and that fingers of your left hand should be more vertical for better technique - my question is how do we implement proper muting/reduce string noise by trying not to touch other string with either your left or right hand?
i guess : right hand : use your palm left hand : use the base of your fingers on the strings which are not right under/above the currently played string (which you will mute with your palm) and maybe since you don't fret at exactly a 90 degree angle, then you still mute (just a bit) the strings right above/under the currently played string

Thanks for another great video Bernth! What are your thoughts on using a stylus pick to reduce digging too deep and to improve the overall efficiency of picking when using a regular pick?
Can you use that new pick holding technique for any type of playing? I used to play like this too, but I had a really rough time getting good chordstrums this way, especially when palm muting and galloping. So now I'm actually holding my pick like you used to, except stretching out my fingers completely to not hit the strings. Now I'm not noticing any downsides but you didn't either in the past right. So I'm thinking about forcing me to switch it up. What would you suggest? Greetings from Vienna ;)
