I'm 57 years old and I've been playing guitar since 1987. From a technical perspective, Sophie can play rings around me. The best thing about this montage is the clips that show her playing with a metronome. That's serious practice. Serious practice brings serious results. She starts playing at 9, and by the time she's 21, she's a shredder. Sophie, you are very talented, but what this video demonstrates most is the effort. Simply: The practice. You're an amazing player, and you obviously worked very hard to get there. Well deserved!

    • @chrisking6695
      @chrisking6695 3 роки тому +6

She isn't talented she's hard working and you're not. You wasted decades noodling around like most instead of targeting goals and working towards them with a metronome and now you pretend everyone who is better than you is more talented or whatever.

I was also 9 when I started playing guitar then piano at 11. Now at 65 I totally suck after putting them down. I blame long work hours and raising a daughter by myself. You’ve inspired me to pick it up again. Played every so often and still know my chords but finger tips have gone soft.

I'm only 27 but took a 5+ year break because of work. Got sick, had surgery, and been at home for a year so I picked it back up. The first few weeks were a grind, and my fingers even bled a little, but it was the best decision I've made since I've been off

Git it back...we can. I'm 72 and lost it thru developing essential tremors in my left hand. Now am determined to restore some of what I had thru diciplined scale work with the metronome. It can be done. This lady is complete inspiration.

There was nothing cringeworthy in this at all. Thanks for sharing. You just got a new fan and subscriber. I hope that if you are ever having a day with low inspiration, or just feeling a bit down, that you can remember how many of us look up to you as a guitar goddess, and can only wish that we had the drive and dedication that you have had through life to excel at a craft like you have.

Another important part of your journey is the diversity in the music you play. It's important to not just focus on the genre you want to be in but also try other genres. You'll learn lots of techniques, patterns, and rhythms, which will make you a better guitarist in your favourite genre in the end. I didn't do it, progress was slow, and then I quit for 8 years due to limited time, studies, work and stuff. Only recently got back and it is frustrating to have to start from scratch again and fail even at songs I could play back in 2014. My biggest enemies back then were gallops and arpeggios/sweeps, still are but now I also can't do all of the other techniques anymore

@Morbid Angel is better than Death you know all your doing is proving your missing the point right? Shredding is a skill and a really tough one nobody said it was all you have to do to be good but its a nice skill to have.
Style over substance is the dumbest argument to make in an entirely subjective artform like music, if you can't appreciate alittle shred here and there then that's your problem but now your trying to make it other peoples problem by telling them what they should or shouldn't do. Your not the god of taste and your opinion is not the only valid one here.

I really like how in your early years especially how you played the same song at different ages. Most memorably sweet child of mine. At least in my opinion it's cool to see the out of tune bends, something relatable to all beginers, but then over the years you can see your learning process with realizing you play acoustic with a different approach, and on electric the bends start sounding in tune, then after that is when the Feel kicks in and it's obvious every aspect of your playing takes off from there. I guess my point is every guitarist feels cringe when they critic themselves learning but it was awesome of you to make it public so the rest of us can see even someone who obviously has it figured out nowadays had the very same "cringe" moments. That said my favorite phase was definitely the pink Floyd phase. Really nailed the feel. I definitely got that like "shit that was cool" giggle thing musicians get when they hear something that hits them in the soul.

I started playing guitar 3 years ago at 37 and when I see people like Sophie and (you) JJ play some hard rock it makes me feel kind of discoraged and useless. No matter how quickly I improve and how much I feel like I'll never be good enough with my guitar playing. I wrote 3 crappy riffs so far not too many views on them and I am not sure what I can do to play faster and sound better. Finger tapping just seems to take me longer than usual to learn properly. I am thinking of switching from my first ever Gio Ibanez guitar to a Epiphone Les Paul in near future. Both of you are amazing guitar players and I give huge props to both of you.

Not sure what I can say that hasn't been said but thought i'd weigh in. I've followed you on Instagram for about a year and quickly recognized what an amazing player you have become (And gorgeous too). Really enjoyed the video of your journey and as many have said, nothing to be embarrassed about. No one is born great and we all have to pay our dues but I saw the quantum leap in your ability in about year 3-4. Ive played for almost 50 years but have never reached the level you play at but I have used several of your David Gilmore solos to improve the ones i attempt to play. It is clear you have been influenced heavily by a lot of metal songs and your solos, neck work, bends and scales are just amazing. Not sure where you stand on SRV, but he is another favorite of mine and extremely technical to match. Hoping to see you cover a few of his songs in the future. Please keep rocking and getting better, you are an inspiration and appear to be a seriously nice person as well.

Started when I was 11-12 (1981?) Can't remember. Got my first real guitar a 83 gold bowling ball telecaster at age 13-14? I could write a book about the next 30 years. But what I see in your journey is the different guitars and the music we like to play. Your more dedicated than I was. And have had a lot more guitars. I've just been around longer. Marriage, kid, divorce and everything in-between etc etc. And thirty years of playing on and off. Gone from metal and so so guitars to a fingerstyle mesh of blues, progressive, jazzy stuff? And building the best guitars I possibly can. We basically just progress. Of course I don't just do one thing. I have a lot of interests soccer, baseball, astronomy, chess, skateboarding, biking to name a few and I am multi tradesman for a living. Versatility is my thing. Have respect for people who can stick to one thing their whole lives. Like being great at one thing vs being good at lot of things. Oh I see the fashion, too. Clothes, hair dues lol. Went through my long hair phase then back to short again

It's so nice that there's UA-cam to show your skills off to healp you get ahead in Music. WHen I was young all we had was the CB radio to set up jams meat girls and get keger party gigs. It was alot of fun when hundreds of people would show up at the keger gigs. Great playing - I like the more progressive lead playing that's what I did alot of in my playing time.

What an amazing video! Not even remotely cringe!
I've followed your channel for a while, and you've grown by leaps and bounds.
I most like the Pink Floyd covers era, where you're so comfortable with playing that you are enjoying it. That's a milestone.
    Continued success!

Anyone who is a seasoned player can pick up just how fast her progress was. Where she was at 15 (6 years of playing) would take the majority or similarly skilled players 15-20 years or more, even putting in daily hours. Many won’t even get to that level in their lifetimes, in fact. And yet she was just getting started.

I'm a little late to this party, but my heart melted a little when you were 10 playing sabbath ! (Yep I'm on OLD school metal head and a dad of 3 girls) my youngest had an interest in guitar when she was little and walked away from it when she hit her teens. You are inspirational, I hope you get what you want from life.

OMG. I only just learned about you from Musician Mansion, but I am SO HAPPY that I did!
I mean no disrespect when I say that that guitar was bigger than you were in those early clips and that is one of the cutest things I have ever seen!
You are a monster player and you have clearly earned your reputation by being a killer.
    Thank you for your work!

Well I was just flicking through UA-cam and wow you have grown into a great player for sure and never think of your early days as bad in any way because what ever style of music a guitarist picks to play and gets the chance to play like you later on in life to me it's all worth it. I myself look back at when yes you guessed it longer hair and a flying vee + marshall and at the time was great but as I got older playing covers gave me a better living with lots of travelling and famous people that I have been lucky enough to meet. Really great track for your first single and I will keep an eye on your career as hopefully you have tons of success with your music. If you would like to see a video of this old fella type in on UA-cam ROUTE 66 Shadows medley and you can have some fun watching us play and doing the dance steps to match the music it's a bit old but still may just make you smile. Cheers young lady and have a great career.
