We hope to set sail (or rather start our engines) on our Great Loop Adventure in spring 2022. But we still need to find a boat.

Love the Hatteras ! Classic lines. Hugely practical. Immensely stylish and could be remodelled beautifully too . Great price as well . Seems like the perfect boat for this adventure

Hi Sterling! Thanks so much for joining us on this crazy adventure :). We just posted an update. We may have found the unicorn of a boat w were looking. It has the livability of the Hatteras but with more modern equipment. Stay tuned!

We were one of three couples who spent two weeks in the Bahamas aboard a Hat 56. Never felt confined or crowded, with so many spaces aboard there was always a place to 'get away' for quiet time, and being inside due to weather was a non-issue (especially with rear isingglass). Very comfortable and managable yacht.

We have a 63’ Hatteras (1987). We are doing most of the loop on it. Ours is stabilized and has bow thruster. We have 3 teen boys and 4 staterooms and 4 heads. It’s the perfect space for a family. Working and homeschooling is great. A Hatteras is a solid boat! Best of luck. You’re welcome to ask us anything if you’re leaning towards a Hatt.

The wide body pushes the salon walls out to the gunwales, eliminating the the complete walk-around...but makes for an enormous living space

Great to know! This one still had a complete walk-around so maybe it wasn't a wide body????

One good thing about this Hatteras, it’s a blank canvas for you to decorate. Another words very little built in furnishings. There is a Hatteras out there that has been upgraded.

If you 2 are stinking rich and mechanically inclined, this Hatt will be great for. Otherwise, you'll be spending a lot of time trying to find a good mechanic that won't be practicing on it during your adventure. Good luck !

I am on my second Hatteras. 1977 58MY and now 1976 48 LRC. Great boats but complex. Unless an exception to the rule for most any boat you buy, you should plan to spend 6 months getting to know it and repairing or replacing systems. Most people who are selling do so because they are either not regularly using the boat or they cannot afford the upkeep.

    • @TheBoomershines
      @TheBoomershines  2 роки тому

Ha! We don’t have six months in our lives to gradually do anything! Just not the way we roll. There will be plenty of time to get to know a boat while Looping and no matter how much preparation anything can happen along the way that you just have to TCB⚡️ ⚓️Mark

That is a good looking 56’ Hatteras! I say keep her like she is just add some new soft goods and add a Glendenning cablemaster for your shore power cable/s. I don’t think you will miss the stabilizers. Yes thrusters would be nice but you have two big diesels. Then all you need to do is work on getting the Nanny.
Heck we are anxious! We need to get our boat out of winterization in Baltimore and bring her here to North Carolina so we can get her ready for the 2022 Fleet.

Are you not planning on going on the Erie Canal? I keep hearing you say the lowest bridge you must worry is 19'6". There are 15' bridges on at least the western part of the Erie Canal. Are you going around Halifax and down the St. Lawrence River instead?

    • @TheBoomershines

Those old Hatteras yachts are perfect boats for total make overs. It would take most of a year, but new engines, new galleys, new heads, new electronics, new paint. You could easily end up with $1M invested in an old hull and more than a year in the yard.

    • @TheBoomershines

Love the Hatteras, we just purchased a 70’ Hatteras in Europe and took 9 months to get back to the PNW.
First your power cord issue, think exercise, some people would put in the glendinning then spend more money on exercise equipment, why? again think exercise. Second don’t worry about the age, the hull is better than a lot of newer boats and pumps and other stuff still need replacing, it’s a boat. Third your updated plotters should do you fuel burn for you, my wife is a retired special educator and said, “ great math skills for the kiddies to do those calculations for you, a good job for them as well. Forth not to worry about thrusters (training wheels) you have twin engines, properly used they move the boat the same as thrusters. Five travelling will be mostly in calmer weather and not much in open ocean so no need for stabilization, it’s a Hatteras they handle a lot of sea just fine. Enough for now, good luck in your search, love the channel.
