The threads and the moves were the shit back in the 60's and 70's. Talented and smooth. Love seeing a young beautiful sister diggin the vibes. The Dramatics, Persuaders. Del Phonics, Stylistics, etc.

This song(1977) marked the end of the old 60s/70s-style R&B sound - right b4 funk/hip-hop/rap took over. Very important marker in soul music history. #TreasureFromTheVault

Girl, back in the day this was IT. ☺️ (people used to actually go around asking each other what each other’s zodiac signs were. I hear it once in a very blue moon these days, but back then it was very common!) There is also an extended version of this that’s about 10,000 minutes long! 🤣

My mom used to love that song when I was a kid, and all the fellas in my hood used to try and sing it. Yes they were smooth and dressed like gentlemen back then, nowadays it’s sagging jeans , dingy draws and no shirts on stage..😒

They were a 1-hit wonder, but this 1-hit of theirs was popular as all get out! Asking each other their horoscope sign back in the 70's was a thing just like mood rings were a thing! Please play the live version of "Gloria" by Enchantment.

An all time great song by a classy group....James Mitchell ( Second from the left at the beginning of the video ) left the group and then from that point they were four members.

A very smooth floating reaction ☁ ♈♉♊♋♌♍♎♏♐♑♒♓☁! Float On was released as the lead single from The Floaters' 1977 album: Floaters. It was written by Marvin Willis, Arnold Ingram and James Mitchell Jr. It was produced by James Mitchell Jr and Marvin Willis. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #2 on the Hot 100. The song also reached #1 in the UK and was top 5 song in many other countries. Astrology was often part of the courtship ritual in 1970s America. Guys would often walk up to a girl and ask her "what's your Zodiac sign", that's in part why this song was such a big hit at the time, and is timeless. Yes, most R&B groups back then were extra smooth with their on stage presence something that is missing in today's R&B music- there are no R&B groups.
James Mitchell Jr got the idea for this song when it came to him in a dream. He jumped out of bed and hummed the tune into a tape recorder so he would remember it. The idea for the lyrics was to spotlight each member of the band, who introduced themselves with their name and astrological sign. The verses read like personal dating ads, as each member makes his pitch to the ladies. For example: Cancer and my name is Larry / And I like a woman that loves everything and everybody / Because I love everybody and everything.
The song has been sampled by many artists including: Tupac, Blackstreet, Lords Of the Underground, Big Daddy Kane, Stetsasonic, Dream Warriors, Snoop Dogg, Brand Nubian and more.
The song has been covered by many artists including: Full Force, Stetsasonic, The Barron Knights, Mystic Diversions and more.
    The Floaters Info 📰:
The Floaters were a R&B vocal group, from the Sojourner Truth public housing projects in Detroit, Michigan. The group was formed in 1976 by the Detroit Emeralds' group members Marvin Willis and James Mitchell Jr. The group included James Mitchell Jr's brother Paul Mitchell, as well as Larry Cunningham, Charles Clark and Robert Palmer. Robert Palmer would leave the group before they recorded any songs and was replaced by the unrelated Ralph Mitchell. The Floaters (Charles Clark, Ralph Mitchell, Paul Mitchell and Larry Cunningham) worked the Detroit night club scene before they secured a recording contract with ABC Records.
The Floaters’ debut album: Floaters (1977), contained the hit lead single: Float On, which made it to the top of the Billboard R&B chart. Their first single was also an international hit song, reaching #1 in New Zealand and the UK, #2 on Billboard Hot 100 and Netherlands, #5 in Canada and Ireland and #16 in Australia. The second single released from the group's debut album: “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”, reached #28 on the R&B chart.
The Floaters, with new group member Jonathan "Mighty Midget" Murray, released their second album: Magic, in 1978 on ABC Records. The lead single from that album: I Just Want To Be With You, reached #36 on the R&B chart. The second single released from the album: The Time Is Now, failed to chart. Jonathan "Mighty Midget" Murray would subsequently leave the group after this album making the group a quartet once again.
Between 1979 The Floaters, now recording with MCA Records, recorded the album: Float Into The Future, and released the single: Levitation, which failed to chart. Ensuing internal group struggles and a battle over The Floaters name led to the departure of both Larry Cunningham and Ralph Mitchell from the group in 1980. Thus, a local Detroit female singer, Shu Ga, was recruited to work with the remaining duo: Paul Mitchell and Charles Clark, for the group's 1981 album: Get Ready For The Floaters And Shu Ga. Both released singles: For Your Love and Get Ready, failed to chart and album sales were less than expected.
In 1982, The Floaters disbanded as a group. However, eight years later, in 1990, with their legal issues over the group's name now resolved, the classic group lineup resurfaced and continued performing at smaller venue settings within the Detroit community and at special event concerts featuring nostalgic 1970s Soul music acts. During the course of the next decade Charles Clark left the group for a new career in Gospel music and Paul Mitchell became a local Detroit music producer. Original group member Robert Palmer rejoined Larry Cunningham and Ralph Mitchell in the new group lineup as a trio that continued to perform together well into the new millennium.
In 2005, The Floaters recorded a limited edition EP titled: The Way We Were.
In 2013, The Floaters presented at the 2nd Annual R&B/Funk Music Festival in the Arcadia Commons Festival Place in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In 2016, The Floaters performed a concert cabaret at the night club: The Piece of the Rock, in Flint, Michigan. Included in their stage show were the songs: “Float On” and “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. The group also released a live performance DVD in 2016: "The Floaters: Float On - Live in Concert".
The Detroit Emeralds with James Mitchell Sr and Marvin Willis are currently in the studio recording their upcoming 2023 album, which will feature exciting collaborations, including with The Floaters surviving group members- Ralph Mitchell, Charles Clark and Robert Palmer.

Yeah but then those groups practice for hours on their routines before they performed back then there were no auto tunes so if you couldn't sing you weren't getting signed. In the studio they used actual instruments and the singers real vocals to make those hits.
