Look at all the salt in the comment section! Just because you don't like Mario, Zelda or Nintendo in general, you should not discredit how good are these games. Especially since all these gamer press agreeing on that it's a very good game. It's easier to think that everyone around the world was paid by Nintendo to get a good review than to imagine that these are actually good games?
No, it's a good game, but no way does it deserve a perfect score. Even watching this video, they couldn't give a coherent reason for giving it a 10 - mostly talked about collecting moons.
Tere is no such a thing as a perfect game. There will always be people that do not like certain aspects of a game, or not interested in it at all, no matter how many people will have the time of thier life playing. Even if the game has no bugs or makes no mistakes, but highly doubt there there will be ever a game that has no bugs or glitches ever. 10/10 means that the person who played it did not find anything bad about it and enjoyed it so much that he/she thinks everyone should give it a go, it's essential. If we would only give out 10/10 to perfect games, we would never ever use this score. But this wouldn't make other games worse, or shouldn't ruin other platforms and companies, so I don't see the reason to hate on a game (which most of the haters never tried).
By reading a review of watching a video you will never get the same experience of something as playing it. This is a game, and interactivity what makes them different than any other media or art. Collecting moons may not seem to be a big deal, but when you actually do it, it feels great, escpecially on hard to get ones. Games are there to experience, and feeling rewarded for reaching a collectable(let it be moons or coins or clothing), then feeling rewarded again and again will make most of the players happy. And if you get a game that can be this fun and not really able to find a problem with it, why would not say it is an essential and they should try it too? :)
The switch is my first nintendo console since the SNES. I didn't get Zelda BTOW (I put 40 hours into it) and the praise it received. I enjoyed it immensely but it wasn't a masterpiece for me. Mario is much, much better IMO despite being ridiculously simplistic. They're both good to great games but neither is a masterpiece. Having said that, I think there is literally only a handful of games deserving of a 10 score.
Devon Connelly IMO Mario is great because it's so deceptively simple. Anyone can pickup Odyssey and start playing and running around. But there is a lot of advanced stuff as well if you bother to look around. Its the perfect example of greatness in simplicity.

I like the way you putted it. Everything is smartedly putted in the right place. Top notch level designed. There was only one puzzle (the one with the rotating shapes) that pissed me off.

The level design and creativity in this game makes it more refreshing than anything I've played in a while. The mechanics are spot on. The challenge is in finding hidden moons. It can be really surprising where they're hidden sometimes. The worlds are gorgeous. It's such a really well
made game and a tribute to decades of Mario games. People say if this was any other character it wouldn't get a 10. I don't think any other mascot could pull this off. This game gives a nod to a lot of Mario's history and brings it altogether so perfectly. It's a collection of everything Nintendo has done right with Mario in the past.

I don't get the "If it would not be a 10 if it wasn't Mario". Isn't that a testament to Nintendo's quality? That despite being 30 year old, Mario games can still get a 10. I can basically play the same argument for literally every 10/10 game. Haters just want a reason to hate. This is by far the best 3d Mario made and IMO even surpasses Galaxy.

That's just for the story though, you can sink hours into this afterwards platforming around for more moons and it's nothing like clearing an Ubisoft map even though it sounds it.

Let us not forget that Resident Evil 4 inspired a lot of the games like The Last of Us. Not trying to credit RE4 with Nintendo as it was developed by Capcom. RE4 did come out on the Gamecube first.

I think what he's referring to is that by throwing the cap up, you can launch Mario into it to do an advanced movement option. We are seeing it already in speed runs. But yes, you don't HAVE to do it.

This game has phenomenal sound effects. It really makes gameplay feel all the more satisfying.
Oh my god these comments. People get on game journalists for not knowing what they're talking about, but most of the public don't either. Now having your own opinions/preferences is perfectly fine and should be shared. However, being so committed to edginess to the point of smelling your own "mature" ass, doesn't help this industry grow in the slightest.

Miyamoto took a step down from this Mario game and let the new guys try their hand at this. What we got was a Mario with a SHIT ton of new concepts, while also returning to the nonlinear form of game, akin to 64 that fans have been craving for for so long.
This is a high budget game with ridiculous polish, like 15 hours of postgame content, and NO MICROTRANSACTIONS. C'MON, HOW'S THAT NOT ENOUGH ALREADY??
Movement feels like a dream, level design is experienced perfection, music is GODLIKE, 1080p, SIXTY. FRAMES. PER SECOND!!!!!! Beautiful visual design with variety and charm unlike any Mario game before it.
You wanna know why this game's a 10/10 for me? Even if I fucking hate rating systems? I'll tell ya fuckin' why:
The sheer ability to break this goddamn game in half. This game rewards skill more than damn near any other. If you get good at the tech jumps with Cappy, the world is your oyster. The true feeling of power and freedom and accomplishment you get from skipping any section in this game is wayyyyy more gratifying that exploring some giant world with no substance. I got 30 hours out of this game from collecting 500 moons and completing the final, difficult (for all you fuck bois saying how easy the game is), bonus world.
The cherry on top? Skippable cutscenes, and a short beginning: the necessity of replay-ability and speed running.
This game is a gift and an addiction. Play it, and the Wonderful 101, and Yakuza 0 to see what some real fucking video games are.
*sigh*, at least Battlefront 2 has a 0.6 on metacritic, that gives me faith, at least as far as microtransactions and loot-boxes go.
Super Penguin Bro lol I love Nin10doUltra. That dude is funny. Btw, it doesn't run at 1080p but 900p. Not saying it matters but just correcting. And the controls are GODLIKE! My only gripe is with the lack of depth perception in certain platforming sections. But that could be my personal problem since I've had problems with 3D platforming before as well. But this game deserves every praise it gets. The only people I've seen in the comments are bitching about how the supposed kiddy aesthetics is shattering their finnicky adulthood. I have yet to see people present a decent argument against this game in this comments section.

Not disputing the score at all, and the game’s in my top 4 for the year, but I felt like some of the crazy transformations, exploration and mechanics going on came at the cost of more precision based platforming, something that I personally preferred with Galaxy. Even the 500 moon level didn’t take me very long compared to the intense last levels of Galaxy 2 and 3D World. Still an incredible game though
to all the salty people in the comments trying to say "it's just Nintendo if it were anyone else it wouldn't be so great" lemme break it down for you; iv'e been waiting for breath of the wild for 4 almost 5 years i rate it a 90/100 and this is coming from a HARDCORE zelda fan OOT is my favorite game of all time and even that isnt a 100/100 for me. this game however i did not wait 4+ years for haven't owned a super mario game since 64 theres no nostalgia or rose tinted glasses over a brand new game and lemme tell you this game is better than BOTW and equals my love for OOT and my childhood WAS OOT. i critically cannot find a single flaw in this game: the closest being that many of the bosses are too easy. but to its credit this is 2017's children's game of the year. so even by comparing this game to classic Nintendo games this game blows soo many out of the water. this game deserves and earned a full 99/100 the -1 being that it's exclusive and not everyone can get a chance to have this prescription of happiness and charm

This game reminds me of Banjo Kazooie but with Mario characters. Not that that's a bad thing by any means. I love me some Banjo Kazooie and I know the odds of a Banjo Fourie are practically near zero so I will have to make do with the closest thing possible. Anyway I can say after playing this game and getting all 999 Power Moons as well as all the Regional Coins that this is probably the best 3-D Mario game thus far. 64 paved the way for the formula. Sunshine experiemented with it and tried new things for an enjoyable and unique experience. The Galaxy games used the 3-D formula to build an epic adventure using various physics manipulation as well as testing various level designs and ideas. 3-D Land and 3-D World took the idea of 3-D and combined it with that of a 2-D game providing a fun experience that appealed to both sides. Odyssey was the game that did it all. It has a bit of everything from all the previous 3-D installments and then some. The plethora of collectables as well as 17 sprawling worlds for you explore and secrets to find made for the largest Mario platform game in history. If you don't have an NX/Switch then I highly suggest you get one because this game right here is enough of an incentive alone to own a Switch.
So in otherwords, things you want from a videogame, new enemies, new story, character development, real co-op and a challenge, are unnecessary from Nintendo, "we" want tradition from Nintendo.
Many classic, well-liked games don't have any of that. Can we now decide arbitrary standards?

I find it funny that people complain that this game is getting good reviews just cause it’s mario. Even though many of the people who say those things hate the game since it’s mario, and nintendo made it xD
i enjoy this game more than i have enjoyed a video game in years (yes even more than BOTW)
NONE of the moons require motion controls, including the frog jump moon in Bonneton and the Bullet Bill moon in Tostarena. I’ve done both of them multiple times without motion controls and it’s completely possible. For the frog one, you need to stand at the edge of the platform, jump as the frog, jump out of the frog with Mario, and dive into the moon. For the bullet bill one, all you have to do Lead it off the pillar and capture it as it’s about to explode to give yourself enough time, then shoot straight for the moon.
It's interesting exploring the kingdom's, can be weird in a good way, and a rewarding addicting game to play.
Cap kingdom frog moon is possible without motion controls. Didn't know about the flip technique so what I ended up doing was jumping with frog then releasing the frog at the apex of the jump, throwing cappy out and dive jumping onto him for extra height. It was just enough to net me the moon after a few tries. The angle was very precise and I was initially surprised Nintendo would include something that finicky so I'm a bit pissed off to now know I could have just used motion controls lmao
But yea afaik, you can beat the game with just standard jumps and can collect at the very least the vast majority of the moons without motion controls
Mario got a well deserved 97 metascore just like Zelda this year Nintendo is utterly destroying the competition. Every other game besides Persona 5 was just forgotten. B Ratings all around.
durkadur27 Same. I have literally no interest in any Sony game except for Persona 5 which isn't even made by Sony. And Atlus is already making SMT5 for the Switch. So I doubt I'll miss Persona 5 once SMT comes out. Most of Sony games this gen are trying the mimmick the whole Last of Us cinematic bullshit. I want a GAME...not an interactive movie. Horizon looks good but not compelling enough to buy a PS4. Not when I can play equally good if not better games without having to be tethered to a TV. Don't give two shits about graphics. The Switch's graphics look good enough. Don't care how the light reflects/refracts from Nathan Drake's skin. Its impressive tech wise but I am sure the novelty will wear off.
I just beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and boy was that a great game. Probably the best gaming experience I've had to date. I have never played a game with so much detail and story it was amazing

You can make the Goombas follow you to the steps then jump on them. Otherwise you can shake the whole console with the joycons attached and it'll do the jumps anyways. Just make you're you're holding tight xP

So I am loving this game but for me it's a 9 at most. There is very few games that actually deserve a 10 and this one is not one of those. Gameplay-wise it is an 11 but it falls short in a lot of ways (for me) which hold it back from being "essential." Having said that I am not finished with the game, so my opinion may change, but I think I've played enough to get what the game is presenting. For me it cracked my top 3 games of 2017, but just barely.
Devon Connelly the real fun starts when you finish the main campaign. More you continue, more you will become addicted to the game

This is my first 3d Mario game and the only complaint I have is about the 3d depth perception when it comes to platforming. But I am assuming that's the inherent problem with all 3d platformers and not just Mario. But still, it's really frustrating to fail at platformer just because the camera angle is weird sometimes.
4.5/10 for me I love games where you collect stuff and I love platformers but this game doesn’t do it for me, there are so many recycled moons where it all comes down to ground pounding or going left in the 2D sections which makes for some really unsatisfying moons and as a result an unsatisfying game.

Odyssey is definitely an amazing and a 10 out of 10 game, but I still don't think the game comes close to Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 - the constant innovation, creativity and suprises those two games constanly threw at you, is basically still unmatched in any title to date - I really hope those games make it to the Switch in HD remasters soon.
Actually I even think Super mario 3D World (which I really hope makes it to the Switch too) is slighty better in a lot of ways. It had more pure platforming, fast paced action and hardcore challenges - something I feel SMO often lacked - sure the possessions, the worlds, the eastereggs, and the overall unmatched Nintendo polish is all awesome, but the game still had way too much empasis on slow-paced exploration.
Just running around, searching, and finding moon number 786 in some far corner of a desert, doesn't really feel like a platforming challenge, but more like a padding incentive too make players explore every part of the games worlds. Exploration and searching fits an adventure title like Zelda better IMO.
Again, I still think Odyssey is amazing and a new classic, and definitely better than SM64 and Sunshine (even though Sunshine hardly even is great game, probably the only 3D Mario game deserving of a score bellow 90) but I was still slighty disapointed.
For the next 3D Mario I really hope Nintendo turns up the action and the platforming again, and tone down the explaration part a lot.
After all, Mario is known as the King of platformers first and foremost.

TheNegroShoddy All the games you mentioned I loved far more then Odyssey. Dishonored and Prey are games that have many secrets and possiblys with the powers you get and what you can do with them. This game is just collect shit, most open world games get criticized for that, but thats all this game is and they love it. The fuckary is real.

Isaac11 The game aims at a massive age range. The difficulty for the main story may be a little easy, but the post-game and the harder-to-get moons offer a good challenge, in my opinion.
Its a boring collect-a-thon platformer. Painfully dated. Its something my 9 year old neice might enjoy, but even shes grown out of these types of games. She'd probably forget about it after a day or two.
The reviews for this are just like Breath of the Wild. Every review talked about it being perfect, but it was 10 years behind open world games that have WAY more variety, and better storytelling and sidequests. I havent beaten or touched BoTW for about 3-4 months now. Cant be bothered to mow down my 1000th mogoblin or whatever theyre called.
These idiots will never give a fair review for a Zelda or Mario game. 10 out of 10? For a full priced game that can be finished in a weekend like some $15 indie game on steam? With less story? Lol.

mangaas I agree about breath of the wild once you get 8 to 10 hearts then the game becomes really easy and there is no point of fighting the mogoblin because your not getting in xp so you can just avoid them and continue to constantly look for shrine after shrine it got really repetitive

I find it funny that Mario is one of the only games that get away with having the same story and get no points taken away. Same with Zelda. How do you have a 20 min discussion about a game and not talk about the story once? That's because it's been the same story since the first game.
That's the only flaw in both Zelda and mario
The gameplay is fantastic that it makes the storyline quite lacklustre- you're too distracted by the things you encounter in the game to even really notice a generic linear storyline in a non linear world :) doesn't really change how much I enjoyed odyssey, it's quite endearing
Super meat boy was one of the most fun games I have played in years.....do you think I gave a shit about more, the story or the platforming? Story has its place, but it doesn't have to be the main thing in every single game....being fun does
There are games like Mario which have perfect gameplay, story is unimportant. There are games like Heavy Rain which focus entirely on story, and there are games like The Last of Us which blend gameplay with narrative perfectly. There are genres, if you prefer story based games then go look somewhere else
most of the greatests art productions have in the story an excuse to enjoy and appreciate the art of the product itself if you want a true great story read a novel or a poem
That's just a lazy excuse. And clearly not addressing the fact that if other games than Nintendo did the same they would be criticized for it. It shows that Nintendo games are reviewed differently.
The thing that gets me is if the character you played as wasn't Mario this game wouldn't get a 10 honestly. Let Hat Girl from "A hat in time" had been the protagonist I bet my ass it would've got a 8/10 then they would follow with "It tries to be a Mario-esque game but (insert bullshit excuse here)". The Nintendo bias is unbelievable these days Mario and Zelda can rip other ideas from other games and it's fine but let a fresh new IP do it and it's "generic".

GrimReaper4383 I don't think that's a very good philosophy. There's no such thing as a perfect game, but games that stand out with great gameplay and only have a few minor flaws deserve a 10. Otherwise, a score of 10 would be impossible to achieve.
