    EDIT :For the comments that are spamming me and implying ammo prices haven't gone up. There are ammo price aggregators, prices are up by about 30-40%. If current prices seem normal. It means you were overpaying previously. A lot.
    This was made about 3 weeks ago.
    So it seems this ammo price spike is going to probably be pretty short lived. As they always seem to be (until they're not).
    But the information is useful regardless. What is cheap for some, is still exceedingly expensive for others.

      This was the dumbest panic in ammo panic history. What were people even thinking? That Hamas was going to fly over the Atlantic and invade rural America with their paragliders completely unnoticed and then attack some rural county in America? I really think this ammo panic was 95% manufactured by the gun industry and like 5% people worried about hamas striking in the US. Either that or Americans really are every bit as consoooomerist as the memes suggest and just felt the need to buy something to make themselves feel better.

    4:15 dry fire completely changed me on handguns. I really sucked with getting on sight quickly. After spending an autistic amount of time bringing up a good sight picture and pulling the trigger with no twitching or movements I was amazed at how much I changed when I finally went back to the range when I could afford more ammo again. Genuinely night and day difference. Any you don’t have to set up a time. I’ll just sit on my couch and “shoot” random stuff around my house. Light switch, on, pull… paper towels, on, pull. Movement, overt and covert, is probably the best thing to work on if you haven't got the ammo for drills at the range. Moving around quickly and efficiently in 30 pounds of gear with a weapon in hand, without falling and breaking your face, is a skill in itself. A very underappreciated one, if you ask me. Using cover/concealment, low crawling, camouflaging yourself, any kind of practical fieldcraft is good to work on when you want to limit the amount of actual shooting you're doing. When you've got friends to train with, hunter/killer is a great way to work on these skills, moreso if training with NV.

    This is why I got into reloading. I can make 550ish rounds an hour on a progressive press. About 28 cents a round for cheap 55 grain 223 and about 35ish cents a round for 75 grain. The upside is they both shoot significantly better than factory ammo in that class of bullet the only 2 downsides is the time it takes and the cost to entry on getting a progressive press. After about 2500 rounds of 223 you come ahead. I only reload rifle rounds though because pistol ammo is too cheap and the difference between new pistol and my reloaded pistol ammo isn’t worth my time. Once you get into more expensive and boutique rounds like 6.5 Creedmoor, 300 Blackout, 8.6 Blackout and 308 Winchester as I did the cost to entry is quickly overcome.

    What sucks is that after the Covid Craze, ammo prices got better but still never even got close to recovering to something that I and many people could afford to train consistently, just sticking to 5.56/.223 the best prices I could ever find were 40 cents a round (and most of the time it was $0.45+) for basic brass 55 grain, add on expensive shipping and taxes and even when it was considered 'better' it was still very pricey, especially for a round that is meant to fired in higher volumes out of a 30 round magazine. So the problem with this ammo 'crisis' is that once it cools off it's only going to return to the still hyper-inflated prices of the post Covid-recovery prices, which is just Covid prices minus maybe 10-15% depending on caliber.

Sub $100 surplus guns. $300 import AKs. $100 spam cans of 5.45, x39 and x54R. 5.56 was sub $0.20/rd. 9mm was $0.10/rd. .22lr was practically free. I try to do the trex arms 50 round carbine practice at least once every 2 weeks. I’ll change it up slightly every time, maybe on a hill, or between some trees. It is efficient, incorporates a reload, some movement, and it’s quick so I can fit it into a busy schedule. It’s fun to do with friends, and people who have never “run and gun” before end up going to the range more often. I also dry fire and try to handle my rifle as much as possible when I’m home. I'll add another comment for those thinking about getting into reloading right now, I've reloaded for 10 years and if you're going to load your own, it doesn't make sense to spend the time if you're not going to use quality bullets, primers etc. Components right now are high enough that it makes no sense to reload if you're looking to save money. If you had bought components a year ago or further back like me, it's worth it but I've done cost comparisons in the last week and it would cost me .80 a round to reload my preferred load if I went and bought the components right now! And then your time.

      I’d argue it’s not even worth it to reload for plinking anymore. Olin and Vista jacked the prices of primers and powder nearly 300%. At least projectiles remained relatively stagnant. But 9mm plinking rounds at 16 cents per round is tough to swallow. It’s only really worth it anymore if you cast and coat your own bullets.

    • @EvilWiffles
      @EvilWiffles 9 місяців тому

      Reloading is super flexible so long as you already have a bunch of bulk primers and powders. I crank out 9mm 147gr ammo by the thousands in an hour or less. Titegroup is cheap and will take ages to run out of. The brass is practically free. Could buy 147gr ammo in bulk but then I'm stuck with only that ammo and usually they are even dirtier then my own reloads. Can't trust manufactured ammo either, they either skimp out on good QC and blow up your gun or cause a baffle strike.

First beep I draw, trigger press and hold on target, second beep I re-cock and holster so I'm not rushing it trying to catch the next beep. Repeat until satisfied. I take a piece of clear tape, paste it on a farthest wall I've got, and draw a dot on it. Great for getting those sights aligned on the draw, and for making sure they stay aligned when the trigger is pulled.

    The way you score paper drills (and you should be training this way for fast, sub 50yd shooting) is by shooting 5-10 iterations and then looking to see what your bullets are doing in aggregate. You don't need to calculate hit factor for every single Doubles or Bill drill you shoot, I only calculate HF for courses of fire that I'm specifically comparing my own performance to other people or past bench marks. I might shoot a single, cold Bill drill and record that HF but after that I care more about patterns than individual drill scores.

    G-Sight laser cartridge for dry fire and printing your own targets while only shooting 5 rounds at it.
    Take your time to evaluate your shot placements at the range. I spend more time swapping out targets than firing at them. Paper is infinitely cheaper than ammo, yet I will see people fill a target with lots of holes that it’s impossible to see where your last shot hit.

    Thank you for this discussion, I've been thinking a lot about how to do low round count training efficiently and effectively.
    I live in a country where shooting FMJ is a luxury, 1 box of 9mm FMJ is around $75-90. So the only option for training is LRN which cost around $26 but it's still quite a spending since I can use that $26 to survive a whole week (My country minimum wage is $10 per day and 1 normal meal costs around $1.5-2). My current monthly quota are 50 rds for 9mm pistol and 50-100 rds for .22 rifle. I'm thinking about mixing airsoft into each drills, should get more reps while still keeping the (real) round count low.
    Totally agree with you on not loading full mag. I prefer to load no more than 5 rds per drill, more that is a luxury.

  • @gob7116

    I will always highly suggest dry fire and looking into someone or personally reloading ammo. Reloads will drastically reduce ammo cost but it cannot be stressed enough to find someone reputable and to be very wary of how your ammo acts and responds. This is especially true for worrying about squibs.
    As for dry fire, I don't think there would ever be a wall or a plateau of improvement. It may be less drastic of an improvement but it will always be more reps than the day prior. Fundamentals are the most important thing. If you need to work on splits and transitions apart from what can be done with conventional dry fire, I'd look into running a mantis system or an auto resetting for your pistol if applicable. It helps a lot.

It improved my first da shot speed and accuracy from the holster dramatically. I can practice quick drawing at my local range and the speeds are identical to practice and accuracy is pretty close. I think the laser trainers are well worth playing with and they're pretty fun. I can easily kill a couple hours just timing my draw/shot. An airsoft gun is a great way to both trigger a shot timer, and also get hits on paper, with the added benefit of not having to go to a range. You won't learn recoil control, but you will be able to draw from your holster and put shots on target, all for less than $100. Easily as effective as an expensive laser training system, don't ask me how I know.

      I've reloaded for 10 years and if you're going to load your own, it doesn't make sense to spend the time if you're not going to use quality bullets, primers etc. Components right now are high enough that it makes no sense to reload if you're looking to save money. If you had bought components a year ago or further back like me, it's worth it but I've done cost comparisons in the last week and it would cost me .80 a round to reload my preferred load if I went and bought the four components right now! And then your time.

    • @BrassFacts
      @BrassFacts  9 місяців тому +1

      Overall yes
      But
      Reloading should be a decision before ammo spikes. Not during. In the same way I suggest buying ammo when it's cheap. So should you buy primers, powder etc while it's cheap.
      If you do it during, you're not going to break even for a very long time. Especially now that premiers are insanely expensive and hard to come by.
      You factor in costs, and time investment and the break even is further extended
      take it from someone that went down that path in the 2012+ ammo scare.

      -reloading components go out of stock real quick, too
      -it doesn't take up any less space to have reloading equipment and components sitting around vs loaded ammo
      -if you hit hard times you can sell your factory loaded ammo (i've even sold off some for a profit during stupid high price periods)...vs nobody gonna buy your sketch-ass handloads
      -the accuracy advantages gained from loading require you tuning a load for each and every gun you have, take knowledge you don't have yet and take a while to gain, and mean even more money and time and wear on your gun to figure out.
