Thank you so much for this laemens terms instruction on mixing this fuel!
My father died April 1st and we relied on his expertise for all of these jobs. But I'm trying to carry on his legacy as his 36yr old daughter by not being afraid to role up my sleeves and figure out how to accomplish his work. Needed gas for my motorized bike and your video, after watching 7-8 others, was the first to show the steps in a no nonsense, straight to the point way and I wanted you to know how your video is positively affecting it's viewers.
Thank you so much, I know my dad would thank you too.

I ran out of gas mid-trip and had no choice but to mix in the tank. Bought a 2.5 oz. bottle of 2-cycle oil from O'Reilly's, then walked the bike to Walmart to get gas. Took a guess and put 1/2 gallon in the tank, then ran the calculator for 20:1 per "conventional wisdom" and found out according the calculator I was supposed to add 3.2 ounces, but I only had 2.5. Thought "fuck it, I won't kill the engine for a short 2 mile trip to home", mixed it in the tank (knew that was wrong but I had no choice). First thing I noticed is loss of power. Assumed the fuel/oil ratio in the gas might be in some kind of conflict with the fuel/air ratio set at the carb, but I made it home ok, just a bit underpowered. (Like 10% or so. not 50% low power.)
Anyways now I'm doing research on pretty much everything. First thing to the channel owner, that graphic about not using Marine oil was really useful, because I almost bought Marine oil at O'Reilly's thinking they were probably the same, and that the price difference was just a scam/marketing. So, this information was useful to me. Thanks.
Second, a comment below about lower-octane fuel actually being higher in power/energy content explains the lower power.
    Does it?
What about my oil/fuel, fuel/air "conflict" theory? Did running higher ratio fuel/oil make my carburetor's output to the engine less efficient?
I'm going to take the video's advice and raise the fuel/oil ration to something greater than 20:1. Not sure if I have the courage or the faith to go all the way to 40:1, but I figure if 20:1 is bad, and 40:1 is good, then 30:1 is better than 20:1. Point here is that whatever mix I do, I'll be adjusting the carb for power. Just curious if this makes sense to people.
Seems to me that the set-screw at the carb is too rich (counter-clockwise, and please correct me if I'm wrong). But when I lean it, the engine has a "stopped" effect when running. The engine sounds weird, the power diminishes. I can't describe the sound, but it's not "pure" and "clean". What's the word for this?

Expensive stuff, I’ll tell ya as a Stihl repairman that 40:1 is probably best. These are higher-revving cheap engines that don’t need you to spend $25 a gallon on. 40:1 will give you the peace of mind of everything being lubed up and running correctly. The next thing is ethanol... is it better to run ethanol free? YES! is this an expensive engine? NO! Personally I ride my bike every other day, so regular 93 octane, 10% ethanol- mixed with conventional two stroke oil isn’t gonna kill it. If I let the carb sit with it in there all winter long- you betcha! Pick and choose battles my friend. Happy riding!

40:1 is 125ml per 5 litters. Just ask for 5 liters when you take your Jerry can to the gas station to fill it. Messing around trying to properly guage the off numbers from filling a partial tank at the gas station will be dodgy to get right unless you are a whizz at math. And going off your gut instinct and guestimating is rarely going to provide an accurate mixing. Also it's better to shake the gas and oil together and not just hope that it mixed well without shaking the both together first. And is easier to do in a Jerry can rather than jerking the bike about. This 40:1 ratio is used for 2stroke bicycle kits, at least mine is anyway.

My brand NEW engine sure won't be running on any 40:1 mixture initially. Note the word "new". It's not so much the rings, there's dry bearings in there, connecting rod, etc... stuff that needs lubrication right from the start. Not all of the oil burns off (or turns to carbon), residual oil remains unburnt and that's what lubricates the internals, not just the rings, but the entire inside of the engine. The manufacturer makes recommendations for a reason. 🤔

    • @HughesMotorized

The guys who build $1000 race engines? They also say use 40:1 from day one. $700 Chainsaws run 50:1 using no break in mix. The "manufacturers" of these engines? They don't know BS about these engines. They buy parts from whatever supplier has the cheapest price and they use unskilled laborers to slam the kits together.

I disagree. If you're building an engine for racing and high-end speed then you do want a lean oil mixture. I'm using my bike for a daily commuter. I need it to be reliable everyday. I need it to last long. I run 16 to 1 in my phantom 85. I ran 16 to 1 in my ld100 and wrote it for 2 years every day. I know a few people that run leaner mixtures. Their bikes didn't last as long. I don't care about performance when I'm trying to get from point a to point b. And my spark plug was completely filled with carbon to wear there was no Gap left and it still kept going. I can send you a picture of it if you don't believe me. Carving is not a conductive material therefore it doesn't file plugs as much as you think.

With out it the piston is going to sieze. There are no water jackets or waterways in a typical two cycle. They are air cooled.

Now if I switch to 32:1 or 40:1 do I have to manually adjust the carburetor idle and fuel mix screws? If I wanted to do a weeks test for each mix and check the plugs for fouling, and do comparisons on temperatures with different fuel mix, isn't it important to adjust the carburetor each time to the correct fuel mix after it warms up??
