The systems of this game honestly remind me of Kenshi. Slow grind through dozens of skills, your ass being kicked constantly, actually having skills benefitting from your ass being kicked, moving over a map, surviving off looting from random encounters, being able to lose a limb and having to crawl around. Also it is kind of jarring rediscovering these hidden gems through english-speaking channel, I definetely remember seeing such games on the shelves of the stores in Russia but I never actually gave them a try, because in my childhood my parents didn't allow such "violent" games and when I grew up I mostly disregarded them for being "oh that 2000's jank of ours", so big thanks for reintroducing them to me!

I never finished Brigade E5 but I did finish "7.62mm High Calibre" which is the sequel.
While it DOES feature a similar "Final Mission", it's thankfully optional, you have a personal goal in 7.62mm and you have the option to leave the country after completing it or staying to take over the entire map.

The reason unit orders "lock up" is because this game simulates unit's stress. Your guys can get stunned if they unexpectedly encounter an enemy, encounter a lot of enemies, and so on. You can see that by the icon above them. The system is not perfect as the unit is supposed to stop the orders, get stunned, and then continue. But sometimes they continue and only then get stunned.
You can also get stunned by taking damage. So stunlock is a very real thing.
I didnt even know the main "visionary" behind the game was Ufnarovsky (ufnv is his nickname), the guy who made an amazing 4X game called Polaris Sector. Pretty much. Except it has "on the spectrum" levels of guns. There is High Calibre, the "sequel" which is absolutely insane with how many guns it has...
Then there are mods. Some QoL, most are "increasing your spectrum" levels of guns. Basegame has a few fun weapons. Overhauling it results in insane combat, its not unusual to be against enemies whom have anti-material rifles late game; no armor protecrs enough.

Not quite, because RTWP doesn't allow you to give commands during animations or attack and move simultaneously, or even use the environment to give you a tactical edge.
It's how those games would play if they were designed to be fun instead of a frustrating slog where the optimal strategy is ultimately to buff the party, send in a melee character to take all the agro and prevent the enemies from moving too close, then have the rest of the characters spam your most powerful magic from a distance whilst standing still and occasionally healing the guy getting his head kicked in with potions.

9:20 the funny twist of fate of corners being so clunky is that this is somewhat realistic, there are actual combat footage of people repeatedly shooting their own cover because they were under too much stress to realize it (and why height over bore is a thing to worry about). As janky as brigade e5 is, turned out real humans can be even more janky.

Speaking of surprisingly novel Russian tactical games, ever tried Silent Storm? While being turn-based and far less jank, it kind of introduced its own flight-sim mechanics in the form of complex ballistics that allowed you to shoot through walls, have ricochets, as well as destroy walls and floors in a very granular fashion. The engine went on to have a couple games made with it.

I remember Polaris Sector. A free version used to be available before it went onto Steam, and I played it for a bit. It definitely has a unique approach to the space 4x genre, and it's still sitting on my wishlist as one of those eternal "maybe" games. True to the dev's approach to tactical games, it has a very interesting take on 4x that I'm quite fond of. It's very ship-based. You outfit your designs with modules that dictate their function. If you want to spy on a planet, you build a spy ship, for instance. And fuel restrictions are heavy, lending a logistic element to the game no space 4x game I've played has. It's entirely possible to build a system defense ship that can't perform FTL travel, but is stacked for combat. Honestly, the steep price point has always kept me from considering purchase, given how it's a janky one man project. But knowing the man behind it has this amount of experience might make me take a second look.

So, I am working on a game like this for fun and I think the best way is to make it like this.
Dying is hard, but being disabled is easy.
Like, if you are gutshot, you are out, but it takes a long time to die (generally). If you can save your ally, they will fight again, but not for this fight (unless it is a relatively minor wound and you got painkillers).
Armor protects more, but doesn't stop all the pain. Shots to the head is very often fatal instantly, but only if they hit the brain or neck.
The biggest danger is bleeding out and the speed of that is based on multiple factors (Where they were hit, if they continue to move, how powerful the attack was) while organ damage can take them out in the long-term. Combat medics becomes less about just keeping your troops in the fight, but making sure that they get back alive if they are hit.

  • @demonicspire1345

The gun mix is really eclectic. Includes guns that never made it to production (pancor jackhammer), novelty civilian market items like the Calico, discontuned russian prototype rifles, and WW2 surplus like the BAR and Thompson. It looks like a couple of the guns even have multiple models, I'm seeing at least two Thompson variants. I guess if they'll let you have the gyrojet they're less concerned with "what would people actually use" and more with "how many guns can we put in the game?"
I'd have to go through in more detail but a few of the descriptions are iffy, like the "carbon" SKS which looks like black polymer furniture and not carbon fiber, but this could be down to translation issues. Or the EOTech at 48:04 describing itself as attaching to weaver rails rather than picatinny (not strictly wrong, but the eotechs were designed for picatinny, they just happen to fit on weaver too).
The DNA of grid-based granular gun customization seems to run through a bunch of russian games, the inventory screen isn't really that different in escape from tarkov.
