Ken is an awesome teacher. He is calm and responsive to you, and big enough to pretty much take Baron anywhere you want him to go without a fuss on his part. Baron had a good workout and was really thinking through on what he learned today. He is one intelligent fellow, and seems to be taking huge leaps forward in his training from most horses I've seen. These videos are going to be great advertisement when he is standing to stud. Strength, conformation, temperment and intelligence all in one package. Can't wait to see how Duke and Earl do when they get to take a turn with professor Ken!

I can understand why Baron got restless when he pulled up to that huge row of hay. But as you say, Ken was so good keeping his buddy Baron in line. It’s always so amazing watching the horses pull huge amounts of weight. And they even pulled that UPS truck out of the ditch. 😆

Db - Hello from our farm in New Hampshire. Yes, Jim will need to answer your question. I had horses. One was half Percheron and half Thoro. My Razzi was young like Baron and I rode him English Hunt Seat. If I so much as opened a candy wrapper while riding Razzi, he would come off the ground, straight up! Because he could not see the candy wrapper and identify the noise as friend or foe. Remember horses are on the menu from wolves, mountain lions and such. Still bred into them to flee first and ask questions second. So I would guess that Baron didn't like the noise of the skid steer and it was out of his eye sight. Jim will need to clarify just why for you. That is just my guess. Baron is doing well for a young horse. Ken is a great team mate and Jim is the best draft horse handler I have seen in my 72 years. All the best! ~ Diane

And what a benefit it is to have an experienced horse like Ken to help with the training. Baron really is doing great and it looks like he is a fast learner.

The illusion of standing on a sled like that is the you're in control. But if a horse steps in an unexpected hole or boot slips on the ice covered sled ya can find yourself with a broken leg. The first coherent words out of your mouth will be "I knew that would happen." After I've done that dozens of times I finally started to take my brain seriously when one part says "Probably not OSHA approved" before the rationalizing parts start convincing me "We're in control." It's been surprisingly hard to do but I'm gaining on it and getting hurt less often and many fewer "close calls". But that's just me. Not saying anyone else should.

I thought for sure Jim was going to spring up top of that hay, like the young neighbour did. But my being 70, I can appreciate Jim’s comment about not being young like that neighbour. Oh, I’ll never forget that neighbour’s wife working away in her bare feet. OSHA would have concerns about bare feet 😂

Kenny is a really good nanny horse. He was comforting and steadying Baron while you were running the skid steer. He was doing the same thing my girls used to do to each other: putting his head in front of Baron, into his space, and blocking his way forward. My older mare was afraid of bicycles, and my younger mare was afraid of dump trucks. They would comfort each other like this when their particular scary thing presented itself. The girl's fears were not unfounded. The older mare had had a stupid kid ride his bicycle up between her hind legs, and the younger mare had had an overloaded dump truck sling rocks in her face (back before you had to have them covered). Fortunately, only one was afraid of each thing, so the other would steady and comfort her through it.
Wow. I'm almost speechless. I know a lot of those following you don't know what they just watched, but that is impressive for a colt that young, and that early in his training. My girls backed fairly well, but never like that. I won a gambler's choice obstacle course once, where you could do the same obstacle as many times as you want, because I kept doing the high-point backing obstacle over and over and over, and no one else could do it. That said, they never backed like that. Well done, Jim! And well done Kenny and Baron!

How well Barron does is a testimony to his training. This doesn’t happen because Jim got lucky and Barron is a “Natural”. Although Barton’s genetics may be such that he is bred for this type of work, it is with good training and preparedness that a horse does this well.

Good morning Jim and Brenda from snowy New Hampshire. We sell commercial hay, but use the square bales and set the bailer at 40lbs. Granted we are all 70-something and that is still a work out! Some folks here use round bales, but frankly they make me uncomfortable. I can see their value to get hay out to the cattle in winter. I saw that done out West on the open range. Bales were dropped from the air to cattle that we way out in the thousands of acres they free roam.
Jim you are doing such a good job with Baron's training. I had a 2 1/2 yr old half Percheron/ half Thoro. Razzi was bred as a heavy weight hunter and well trained when I got him by Judy Scribner. But he was still a young horse and so smart and playful! I would need to remind him that I was on board at 110lbs. He was a fun horse and kind natured. Baron will do you proud. ~ Diane

I think I was as proud of what he did as you probably were Jim. it was little hard to watch all of his movements. with the camera angle. but I watched the tug rope and how and if Ken was dragging him and he didn't drag him that much. Baron did respond to a lot of your commands on call. which really surprise me!. he was listening pretty gud but I'm not a trainer/horse whisperer. but none the less kudos all way round everyone did a great job today Jim.Brenda. I like looking at the well-maintained tales of the horses. Brenda, you do a wonderful job combing out the tails. I don't see tangles or knots. Now my cocker spaniel is another story. He is like a woolly bear.
